Stephen Few introduces the visual analysis of data. He shows readers how to discover patterns in large data sets through clever arrangement, highlighting and filtering of data points. I encountered the book as the text in a four-week online class on visual data analysis. But it also works well as a standalone introduction to this area. The first half of the book has a different focus than I expected. Few suggests that "...we've largely ignored the primary tool that makes information meaningful and useful: the human brain. While concentrating on the technologies, we've forgotten the human skills that are required to make sense of the data." He describes the human visual system, how it processes information, and the errors in perception it sometimes makes. His emphasis, however, is on the strengths of visual perception which he links to best practices in data analysis. One of the most useful parts of this section is in Chapter 2, where he lists and describes the "aptitudes and attitudes of effective analysts."The book's second half describes and illustrates specific visual analysis techniques. It is rich with visual examples, comparisons of effective and ineffective displays, and series of related visualizations which show incremental steps of data transformation and analysis. Chapters are organized by specific data patterns and analytical techniques, describing how to look for the following six kinds of patterns:- Time-series- Ranking and part-to-whole relationships- Deviations- Distributions- Correlations- Patterns in multivariate dataTwo final chapters present recommendations for developers of data analysis software and make predictions about future trends in visual data analysis. The book is recommended for any researcher who works with large data sets. It is well-written, contains clear examples, and references recent research and the latest tools available for data analysis. Readers may also be interested in Few's Show Me the Numbers: Designing Tables and Graphs to Enlighten which discusses how to best describe patterns in data to nonresearchers.

I've worked with graphs and charts for a long time, and it has always been my experience that certain things work "better" in some kinds of presentations than others, but I have never been able to articulate why. The author does a great job of walking through what is happening in our heads when presented with visualized data, and how to take advantage of those thought processes to make presentations more effective. The best kind of teaching is when you keep having "Aha!" moments while confronting things that you're already a little bit aware of. This book abounds with them, and Mr. Few does a creditable job of making it all very digestible. If you're new to creating charts, have a deviant's level of interest in data geekery, or need this book for a class, get it. And get it in print. The Kindle version doesn't have the same impact.

This is the first book purchased for use in my PhD program, and at work, that I have felt others should read. I mention my current academic undertaking only because the academic world suffers as badly as the business world when it comes to actually communicating quantitative information. The author starts by stating that we have an information problem; that we have too much to digest effectively without changing our methods. I disagree. What we have is mounds and mounds of unorganized data that too few people have taken the effort to turn into useful information. The author's (achieved) goal was to provide a number of methods by which that data can be used more effectively. But he does more than provide a catalog of methods. He shows how some of them are better in one situation, and that other methods are better in other situations or when the presenter's goals are different. By doing so, he has also given us a very nice set of tools for determining if the next graph or chart is failing to provide all it can or if the presenter is misleading his audience. Mr. Few provides figures on nearly every page of the book and does an outstanding job of explaining them. This book will be referred to often in my career.

An Amazon Most Anticipated Fall Book for Nonfiction “A captivating guide to finding one’s way in the wild.”—The Wall Street Journal “[A] beautifully written almanac of tricks and tips that we’ve lost along the way, with the intention of helping us regain what he calls the 'sixth sense': our innate ability to scan the landscape and anticipate what might happen next . . . Long story short, I now trust Tristan Gooley with my life.”—Guardian “Gooley offers the reader a chance to recover the outdoorsman’s natural sense through 52 'keys,' to exchange slow, analytic thinking for the fast thinking that makes connections with nature in a way that few now experience. I recommend turning those keys and seeing what happens.”—Field Magazine “With the promise of fostering a level of awareness so rarefied as to be a 'sixth sense,' Gooley takes readers on a journey to acquaint them with the sounds and signs of nature. . . . The rewards are there for those willing to learn the lessons provided in this detailed and lovely book.”—Publishers Weekly “An imperative book for outdoors enthusiasts but also contains important information for anyone who spends time outside. Gooley’s book is a comprehensive guide to gaining back what was lost; it will help its audience appreciate nature and animals with a new set of eyes.”—Foreword “The most powerful parts of The Nature Instinct are its many examples of how to correct our present-day nature deficit. By undertaking the exercises he describes—using Orion to tell direction and time, creating maps from the wind, or identifying trees by their sounds—the book ‘gently’ hammers our brains ‘into a new pattern of thought.’”—Undark “Gooley writes affectingly of how to recapture our ability to live in the real world with senses ‘almost forgotten and steamrollered by our modern lifestyle.’ . . . A welcome read for the outdoor inclined.”—Kirkus Reviews “An artful yet practical guide to better understanding nature.”—Choice “Most of us have lost our way in nature at one time or another.. . . Gooley can you lead you back to nature if you’re willing to invest the time.”—National Parks Traveler “[A] fascinating look at immersing oneself in nature and understanding what one sees.”—Library Journal “What’s wonderful about this book is not just that it is full of helpful instructions for decoding the numerous clues the Earth provides to its workings—from the flick of a lizard’s tail to a flutter in a bramble hedge—Gooley also communicates and inspires a joyful awe in the countless daily occurrences which offer observant travelers a key to the planet’s miraculous system.”—Big Issue “A paean to the beauty and majesty of nature, especially the nature we overlook in our back gardens and local parks. . . . And like all the best books, it makes the world around you a lot more interesting.”—Spectator “Beautifully written. . . . Good insights. It’s funny how you can read some books and almost immediately find yourself using it in your daily life and travels. I went outside and started looking at trees, to see if Gooley was right about the way the branches grow in relation to the sun and the wind. (I saw what he suggested, but quickly realized in urban areas this tip is of limited usefulness; urban tree experts frequently have a mandate to promote symmetry over a tree’s natural growth. Oh well.) Then I started to check out other tips from the book; to see the movement of the constellation Orion, to observe the behavior of rabbits when they freeze upon seeing you, to look for small openings in shrubs that may signal a pathway or hiding place, and to look at the position birds take before they take flight. I didn’t realize the different responses animals have, depending on their species. In short, Gooley points out all sorts of things that many hunters and nature lovers know intuitively or have learned over time without realizing they learned their skills in steps. And when Gooley makes a determination of a situation, he’s looking at everything (the sky, the time of day, the type of vegetation, the sounds, the direction the wind is blowing, the moisture and dryness, whether animals are communicating and what they are likely saying)…and so much more. This is not a manual, it’s a number of stories that demonstrate many signals and indicators Gooley has observed. It’s interesting reading but perhaps is best taken in small doses, as you may want to put some of his observations to the test yourself.

I have not yet completed the book but already I have found it helpful--as I found his other books to be. I spend considerable time outdoors both on my acre of property and in the local forests here in western Oregon, USA. I have been a lifelong student of natural history, and I love integrating what I learn into my strong interest in hunting our local Black-tailed deer, where knowledge of weather, birds, and native plants brings me closer to obtaining the skills my ancestors would have used to hunt. Mr. Gooley's book is leading me into what I can only describe as an entirely new level of observing wildlife. Just as his book on navigation prompted me to observe the "check effect" on trees, I will be much more sensitive to the patterns and behaviors I observe in the birds and squirrels in our yard, and not just in identifying them. I take my thirteen-month-old granddaughter outside frequently on an excursion to identify the plants and birds. I look forward to being able to teach her and my older grandchildren a deeper knowledge that I am learning from Tristan Gooley's most helpful book.

This book isn't a straightforward 'do this, and this will happen' how-to book. But it does contain a treasure trove of ideas, observations, and advice...all weaved within stories to help you on your journey to become a better observer of nature. Just as with all of his other books, this one comes highly recommended.

This book offers good insight to observing nature from many different perspectives. It is almost certain that even the most advanced naturalist will learn something. The novice can also easily relate and use the book to expand their thought process for natural observations. The author offers a lot of common sense explanations with less emphasis on the theoretical context.

Another excellent book by Gooley!

Insightful book that helps one to learn quickly what took the ancients millennium to learn.

Wonderful book if you are into understanding and trying to rekindle natural instinct.

"The Nature Instinct" is about how the author learned to be more aware of nature, especially about how animals act. He started each short chapter by describing a time when he observed a certain thing or used a skill. In the case of learning to navigate by using the sun or stars or becoming more aware of the wind direction, he described how the reader can learn to do this (even if you don't live in England). In the chapters about animal behavior, he talked about how certain animals--mostly wild animals--act and why.I had thought the book would be more about practical skills rather than things like how to anticipate which tree a squirrel will run up when it feels threatened. It seemed like most of the book was either about animal behavior or why we should take the time to closely observe nature. I already enjoy observing nature, and it felt like the book was more trying to intrigue and educate people who normally don't spend much time doing so.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley.

Very nicely written. The author left out a lot, but had she included everything the book would have been over 1000 pages. I would have read it in one night, but ran out of time after the first 180 pages and had to finish in the morning. We did not just make national news during this, but international news as well. Pretty fierce for an area that our state government doesn't even realize is part of Virginia! Most of us got little to no sleep for the entire 5 months, worrying where the next fire would be.

This is a stunning book. I read it (rather, I swallowed it) in three marathon sittings. The story is captivating, unfolding a troubling and urgent mystery in a once-proud region now become a backwater. It's a page-turner. But the keen insights about this county and its people, coupled with an engaging style, are what push this book into the territory of the extraordinary. I especially appreciated Hesse's ability to balance clear affection for the county's residents with honest critique. Both beauty marks and blemishes. Read it first for a compelling story. Read it a second time to appreciate this fine portrait of a lost America.

“The county would grow used to hearing the wail of sirens in the middle of the night, the sound of engines and tankers crunching over gravel. The county would see landmarks go up in flames and neighbors eye one another with suspicion at the grocery store. At night, the roads would transform into a sea of checkpoints and cop cars; citizens trying to get home while Accomack turned into a police state and the county lit up around them. The county went about its business. The county burned down.” --page 11It was a nightmare that lasted for nearly five months. Between November 2012 and April 1, 2013, a total of 86 fires had been deliberately set in remote Accomack County on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. For the most part, the fires were being set in long abandoned buildings located in extremely desolate areas. It has been estimated that were literally thousands of such buildings dotting the landscape in Accomack County, a sign of declining economic fortunes over the past several decades. Despite the best efforts of state and local police and fire officials very little progress had been made in determining who was setting these fires. It was an extremely frustrating, costly, and baffling situation. Monica Hesse is a feature writer for the Washington Post. She chronicles these disturbing events in her highly entertaining new book “American Fire, Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land”. I simply could not put this book down and read it in just a few sittings. This is easily the best book I have read this year.If you are like me you have probably never even heard of Accomack County. According to Hesse, the heyday of this place was in the 1930’s when a resort complex called Whispering Pines was built. It was the site of one of the fires in March of 2013. In those days Accomack boasted a vigorous farming community as well. But over the next several decades market conditions changed, people moved away, and the place began to deteriorate. In “American Fire” you will meet the two individuals deemed responsible for all of these fires. Charlie Smith and Tonya Bundick had very checkered pasts and were involved in what turned out to be a very complicated relationship. Meanwhile, you will also be introduced to the team of state and local officials charged with putting an end to this reign of terror. You will discover many of the tactics they employed to finally trip up the arsonists and put them behind bars. The story told in “American Fire, Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land” becomes even more incredible when you realize that volunteers fought the fires in all of these tiny communities. Night after night for nearly five months these heroic men and women would have to drag themselves out of a warm bed to battle the next blaze. Simply amazing! So if you are looking for a great book to take along with you on your summer vacation this year I would highly recommend “American Fire”. It reads like a novel but this is a true story. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Exceptional perceptions of the decay of morality in rural America. Written with enough, just enough, empathy that the communal fear becomes the tension. We know who soon enough and there is a fair bit of courtroom drama witnessed and reported on. Nothing tedious, just burnishes the characters. Not so much a page-turning thriller, though there is an element of that, as a provocative peeling of layers of a relationship. Much is left unknown, particularly with respect to the mind and motive of one of the criminals. As I wrote above, I devoured it in one sitting. That was two days ago and I am still thinking about it. It is a learning experience, this book. Non-fiction but enough facility with language and observation to be dressed up to read like a novel. Get through the first few, rather dense, pages. Worth it.

Quite possibly, it could happen anywhere. From November 12, 2012 to April 1, 2013, an astonishing 86 fires were deliberately set in rural Accomack County, Virginia, a sliver of Eastern Shore land bordered on one side by the Chesapeake Bay and on the other by the Atlantic Ocean. It is a place with a rapidly dwindling population, and those who live there are, for the most part, poor, uneducated, and working class. There were so many fires—sometimes two or three in one night—that it truly felt as if the entire county was being burned down. On purpose. And even with that many fires, whomever was setting them was getting away with it. No one saw anything until scorching orange and red flames licked the sky and the bedraggled, exhausted firefighters came roaring onto the scene. Again.Expertly written by Washington Post reporter Monica Hesse, this book is so much more than the HOW--a factual retelling of the arson spree that so spooked and mystified this community, especially when the police finally captured the arsonists: two of their own who had grown up there, one of whom had been a volunteer firefighter for years. It is also a fascinating and poignant exploration of the WHY—why two lovers, who were planning an outrageous, over-the-top wedding, would repeatedly set fire to abandoned structures, vacant homes and historical landmarks that dotted the rural landscape they called home. This is where Hesse succeeds so magnificently because she makes the arsonists human…so human you will think you know them. They aren't monsters. They're just regular people who were having problems—from financial to sexual. But that is also what makes "American Fire" such a chilling and frightening book to read.Written with the utmost candor and compassion, Hesse's compelling reporting—as mesmerizing as the best storytelling—makes this nonfiction book read more like a novel. And then I remember that it's all true, and I get the shivers.Because quite possibly, it could happen anywhere.
