Frank Cho: Women- Selected Drawings Book Two gathers some of Frank Cho's finest drawings; some high lighting the models upon which he based the drawings, featuring details about the models, followed by renderings in black and white followed by what represents an attempt to show how the transition is made into color, as well as sketches made in pencil and those rendered in ink, by someone considered to be a rising star in graphic illustrations and constitutes a fine study of the female figure by an award winning artist; the finest black and white drawing with great detail which constitutes an excellent study in lighting, high lights and shadows being Seduction and the finest in ink being 50 Girls 50.Highly recommended.

I love Frank Cho! He's a great illustrator and he draws women beautifully. Pound for pound one of the best there is.The 1st Women book was amazing! Tons of content. Tons of sketches. Tons of pin-ups. His work from Marvel to Liberty Meadows and beyond. The 2nd book is lack-luster by comparison. There isn't tons of content. On one side of the book are the sketches and on the other are the inked versions of the SAME SKETCHES! What you're really getting is half the content doubled (once penciled and then inked). It was a bit of a rip-off and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone looking for the BEST of Frank Cho's work.

It's a book of pinup art. Could it sit comfortably next to Moran, Elvgrin, Vargas, Mozert, De Berardinis?Almost half of the book are color plates and that is a big improvement over the first book. Most of the color is digital by Nikos Koutsis, Nei Ruffino, Brandon Peterson, etc. The digital color is, for the most part, pretty average; not great, but not too bad either. One exception is "The Queen's Bath" with Brandon Peterson as the colorist. This is excellent and shows more attention to detail rather than simply using flood fills and gradients. But, truthfully, the best colorist is Frank Cho who has a few near the back of the book including a clean version of the cover which looks like it may have taken some inspiration from Gustav Klimt. All of the color plates have either the final pen & ink version or a preliminary sketch. The sketches are all good choices.Yes, this book is two-thirds the size of it's predecessor and if you prefer quantity over quality then this may be a factor for you. It wasn't a factor for me.There is no paper book cover on the hard bound edition which is a minor complaint and not worth knocking a star off. There is a forward by Geof Darrow (Shaolin Cowboy) which is amusing and gives the book a little more character. So I asked the question on how Cho's color pinups hold up next to other pinup artists... sadly, the digital coloring, with a few exceptions don't fare so well. Cho's own paintings, though, are just as good as any of the artists I've mentioned (although Olivia De Berardinis has a much broader vocabulary) and it was really nice to see some of that in this book.

In thIs second volume of his Women series Frank does it again. And by 'it' I mean provide our eyes with a smorgasbord of beautiful, strong and, at times, sensual and funny womanhood. These aren't wafer thin runway models, however. Lucky for us Cho likes his women with curves. Those curves might be plump butts or full breasts. They might be rounded shoulders and powerful thighs. Usually though, it's both.

Best comic style pinup tutorial that i have found i would recommend this for anyone who enjoys drawing beautiful women

nicely arranged fragments, sketches and drawings by an outstanding artist of the latest generation great for education, inspiration, and imagination

Frank Cho is the man who loves his cheesecake but he also loves to draw and knows when to put a line down and when to leave it out. His technique is almost flawless and he improves by degrees. He's in a tenuous place where his popularity could lead to stagnation, and, in some ways that is starting to show. I'm sure many would be fine with that. Not me.He has a lot of promise and I hope he continues to push himself. The content is fairly standard but even there he shows a love for rendering. The title leaves nothing the imagination as to its content. He has a singularly nice take on female form but he does need to consider mixing it up. To see him do a variety of attractive women should be his next goal but he is in comics so it's hard to imagine much pressure on his part to expand, and that's a shame. Catering to the fans who want a type, and define artists by that type is the dead end for innovation as an artist. Even a best selling popular one needs to look beyond the comfort zone and the, often, shallow demands of the fans to find the better artist residing in the recesses of a once creative drive.Frank is very talented and he needs to show it by taking some risks. That said, this is fine for what it, is but not for what it could be. That he does it so well is still very satisfying, as long as the viewer doesn't ponder those possibilities and opportunities being missed.

not enough different from the first, but the images are beautiful

Inside: One Woman's Journey Through the Inside Passage, by Susan Marie Conrad

Review

"Susan Conrad writes of the things that make solo sea kayaking challenging, rewarding and life changing. The tides are not always in her favor and the crossings are not all sun drenched and paddled with ease or certainty. At times her fatigue is as palpable as the taste of salt from tears or sea spray or both. When Susan reaches her goal, the reader will understand there is so much more to a solo endeavor than the physical act of paddling 1,100 miles.--Chris Duff, expedition paddler and rower, author, On Celtic Tides and Southern Exposure"I had the privilege of meeting Susan Conrad before she set out on her journey. Her excitement about the coming venture was contagious. As we said goodbye I was not a little envious of all that lay before her. And she does not disappoint. Inside: One Woman's Journey through the Inside Passage is a singular epic. It is a brave story. One of personal triumph, of heart break, terrifying challenges, soulful introspection and sheer joy. It is also a moving story about the power of friendship. Her words flow off the pages, carrying the reader along on the current of her adventure. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about real adventure, personal challenge and experience, through her evocative writing, the wonders and beauty of the Inside Passage." --Milbry Polk, co-author of Women of Discovery and founder of Wings WorldQuest"It's not often that a person possessing the ability to sea kayak the Inside Passage solo is also capable of putting into words the extraordinary mental, physical, and emotional challenges faced daily on this incredible journey. Susan Conrad, author of Inside: One Woman's Journey Through the Inside Passage is one of those people. By skillfully blending sometimes painful memories of her life's trials and tribulations, with stories of the hardships and accomplishments she faced on her 1,100 mile kayaking adventure, she reveals valuable lessons for every outdoor lover seeking to find balance between themselves and nature. The life changing decisions, impassioned frustration, numbing exhaustion, and internal obstacles that we all face on our life's journey are eloquently mirrored here in one woman's Northwest Pacific Coast odyssey."--Denis Dwyer, expedition paddler, author of Alone in the Passage: An Explorer's Guide to Sea Kayaking the Inside Passage"Susan Marie Conrad's new memoir's title, Inside: One Woman's Journey through the Inside Passage, is a bit of a misnomer: it is not a "woman's" book. It's a book for everyone. Conrad's narrative is engaging and unpretentious. She comes across as refreshingly transparent. The book is an easy read. Conrad's memoir isn't just a self-discovery, pull-yourself-up-by-one's-bootstraps story. It's an adventure story and a love story."--Robert H. Miller, author of Kayaking the Inside Passage: A Paddler's Guide from Olympia, WA to Muir Glacier, AK"Susan's mostly solo experience reads like a rite of passage, a personal challenge destined to turn her life around from its gritty beginnings and events she would rather have never experienced to a positive new awakening. I enjoyed reading Susan's second expedition. By 'second' I mean her book about the trip, because I know that writing it must have drawn as much energy, taken as much time and pulled as much on her emotions as the paddling trip itself. She reveals her background; some ghosts she was determined to come to terms with. She reveals her hopes and her fears. She reveals the emotion that spending so long in such an impartial environment invokes. She shows her backbone. Hers is the story of a deliberate passage from one place to another, from one life into another, burying old ghosts and creating the foundations for a happier future."--Nigel Foster, kayak designer, instructor and author of numerous books including On Polar Tides and Encounters from a Kayak: Native People, Sacred Places, and Hungry Polar Bears/"Her 1200 mile kayaking expedition from Anacortes to Juneau in 2010 has adventure, introspection, beautiful descriptions and poetic language that capture the imagination and make the pages turn quickly… she's a powerful, courageous woman who happens to be a gifted paddler and a gifted writer."--Penny Carter, The Paddler, Fall 2016"Magic and gratitude. That's what comes through in Susan Marie Conrad's sea tale of her solo kayak adventure through the Inside Passage from Anacortes, Washington to Juneau, Alaska.... Susan's book is an entertaining, enjoyable read.... In the end, Susan rises to what she calls the 'biggest challenge for all humans', that of becoming comfortable with the conditions of the mind in the face of unfolding reality.... Susan's story takes her individual journey and makes it relevant to the reader on many levels... Inside is magic." --Nancy Soares, TsunamiRangers.com"[Susan's] story is an illuminating and inspiring one. She shares both the highlights of her trip and those low moments when the rain seems to last forever and her gear stays soggy and damp. Conrad's writing style is smooth and conversational, and, throughout my reading experience, I felt as though she were personally telling me her story. I enjoyed every minute of this action-packed and exciting memoir. "--Jack Magnus, Readers' Favorite"Within these pages of eloquent writing and striking photos, readers will sleep to songs of humpback whales, thrill to spectacular scenery, delight in the generosity of strangers, and share in the author's joy as she discovers the courage and the deep gratitude that comes from experiencing the best and the worst of Nature and humanity. This is a book we highly recommend." --Chanticleer Book Reviews

About the Author

Susan Conrad grew up on a small farm in upstate New York, where she nurtured her sense of adventure amidst 500 acres of hayfields, stonewalls, and deciduous forests. By dint of exploring the mountains of Colorado, Oregon, and Montana, she eventually discovered the dynamic and addictive environment of coastal British Columbia and Washington State, where she still thrives as an adventure-seeker. Susan is a writer, photographer, personal trainer, kayak instructor, and outdoor enthusiast. Her tenacious exploration by sea kayak has fueled her stories of the natural world for decades. She's "fifty-something" and plans on habitual escapades from Puget Sound to Alaska well into her nineties. She lives with her second-half-of-life partner, along with a ridiculously large dog, and two normal-sized cats in Oso, Washington. Learn more at susanmarieconrad.com

Nonfiction at its finest as one woman faces her inner fears and the outward challenges of paddling solo up the Inside Passage. While many of us dream of setting off on an adventure, few of us ever do. But in mid-life, Susan Marie Conrad was determined to stop running from fear and sadness and start paddling toward something positive. Leaving behind a confusing and frequently cruel childhood, a failed relationship, and the cloak of anxiety that often held her in its grip, Conrad embarked on a quest to live her dream of kayaking the Inside Passage from Washington State to Alaska.Unlike some celebrated explorers, Conrad was well prepared with expert paddling skills, modern safety equipment, and charts notated by her cherished friend and mentor. But no amount of careful planning could prepare her for weeks of traveling alone.During her journey, she experienced the astounding power and beauty of Nature. She paddled in drenching rains, fierce winds, and violent seas. Extreme high tides forced her to rise in the darkness and stand in frigid saltwater holding her gear out of the water until the sea receded and she could sleep again. Grizzly bears prevented her landing in choice camping spots. Black flies tormented her. Creepy men studied her from boats offshore. Every night she slept with her VHF radio, flare gun, knife, bear spray, cell phone, and SPOT satellite device in her tent, reasoning that if man or beast attacked, she would spray the intruder and fire her flare gun, cut an escape hole, call for help, and then press the 911 button on the SPOT so someone could locate her body."Inside" brings the reader along on the adventure as Conrad battles her way up the Inside Passage, learning to cope with ever-changing moods of weather and sea, wildlife both friendly and fierce, and the mixed messages of her own mind. Within these pages of eloquent writing and striking photos, readers will sleep to songs of humpback whales, thrill to spectacular scenery, delight in the generosity of strangers, and share in the author’s joy as she discovers the courage and the deep gratitude that comes from experiencing the best and the worst of Nature and humanity. This is a book we highly recommend.

Disclaimer: Susan is a dear friend, so I'm biased. I witnessed her hard work and persistence in both paddling the Inside Passage and writing this book. Her memoir is a tale of both her inner and outer journey while paddling 1,200 miles of challenging ocean waters and attempting to synthesize 50 years of living — which has its own unique challenges. “Inside" has been called "'Wild' by kayak," but frankly I think Susan's story demonstrates far more self-awareness and awareness of the natural environment around her than “Wild.” Not to mention MUCH more preparation. Without such careful preparation, a person could easily suffer a fatal mishap on a journey like this.Susan has accomplished things most of us only talk about doing. She is one of the most accomplished and impressive women I know; yet she is also kind, humble and down to earth. I enjoyed getting to know her inner world better while reading “Inside.” I also loved her tale of adventure and roughing it in the wilds of the coastal Pacific Northwest, interspersed with intriguing people and places. A gifted photographer and visual artist, Susan has a knack for colorful, quirky written descriptions that capture the imagination and make me want to see these places in person. She also demonstrates a concern for protecting these wild woods and waters, and a deep respect for the humans and creatures who inhabit them. I’m honored to call her a friend and proud of her for sharing this beautiful book with the world.

Susan’s narrative is about her nearly 1200 mile, mostly solo paddle adventure from Anacortes, Washington to Juneau, Alaska over a 66 day period in 2010. By other, less conventional measurements, her voyage spanned “102 chocolate bars, 28 ibuprofen gel caps, seven temper tantrums, five anxiety attacks, two pairs of underwear, one foul wetsuit, and a million magical moments.” Arguably, the latter is a better measure of her trip than the former; this memoir is as much about her own internal personal journey as it is about the water miles and her adventures/experiences along the way. Susan’s book superbly illustrates the power of long-distance soloing to serve as therapy for whatever ails the adventurer, as well as offering time and space for reflecting on the many good aspects of one’s life. Ms. Conrad’s story is both introspective as well as outwardly descriptive, alternating between her struggles with the harsh seagoing environment and wrestling with aspects of her personal life, both past and present. If you choose to read this book to learn about the physical challenges and objective dangers of such an endeavor you will not be disappointed. And if you opt to read it for the arguably more difficult mental and emotional challenges of facing your own life and experiences, it is equally rewarding. It is a fine addition to my library of solo adventures and adventurers.

From the Author

When you read the story of the feeding of the 5000, the Bible talks about how the crowd became "restless" and began to "stand". Â Have you ever wondered how many of them grew tired; maybe they were too hungry and went home? I've often wondered if this story couldn't have been the feeding of the 10,000 or even the 100,000. Â When you're tired, hungry and simply worn out, will you stick with whatever God has called you to? Â The road may be long, it may be dusty, there may be people on it that make fun of you, bully you, and want to steal what you have. Â But Jesus promises never to leave us or forsake us. Each of us have a special gift; a special lunch that God is ready to use to change the world. There's a miracle ready to happen. Â - Austin

Typically I don't like to read, but when I started this book I couldn't put it down! Austin's book, Live to Give, is truly an inspiring book for all ages. He uses real life examples as well as Biblical facts to take the reader on a journey through self-reflection and self-discovery. Live to Give isn't just the title, it's a way of life. Austin not only talked about his talents, but painted a picture on how everyone has been given their own talents; all unique, but none less important than the other. I can't wait to share this book with others, and I would recommend this book to all! Thanks Austin, and God Bless!

Inspiring to young and old!!!! A perfect graduation gift for any age!!!

What does it mean to live to give? It starts with knowing the reason God put you on this earth. God has something for you to do. He has given you a gift and when you use it, it keeps in giving. Austin knows that God could do it all Himself. Yet, for some reason, God chooses people to solve the world's problems.Austin has written this book to help young people understand what they have been living for and what they were made to be living for. He uses the example of the boy in John 6 with the lunch to show that each person is unique. He helps his readers find out what their spiritual gifts are.He continues to use the idea of the lunch to teach several spiritual lessons. He has the knack of telling a very interesting story then associating a truth lesson with it. For example, oven baked, Chicago style pizza can take forty-five minutes to bake. But, "Like many good things, it's worth the wait." (124) He goes on to write about waiting for God to produce results in your giving. Like planting a garden, results might not come for months.Austin declares, "Nothing beats living this way! Nothing we could eat, drink, buy, play, watch, or win in life can compare to the feeling of giving ourselves away..." (11)His final encouragement is to start where you are. "Be willing to let Him use you and your lunch." (190)This is a great book for teens. Austins gives man examples of young people who are giving their lives away. He relates stories of Bible characters. And he adds just the right amount of humor. There are discussion questions at the end of each chapter so this would be a perfect book for a group study.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the LitFuse Publicity Group for the purpose of this review.

Recently I've been meeting with a young man, and we've been talking about how God uses us, our gifts, and even our finances to help others for His glory. I gave him a copy of the book the God Pocket by Bruce Wilkinson that has an extremely practical way that we can purposively live this out.And then I received a copy of Austin Gutwein's Live to Give. Wow!Gutwein is the exact same age as the young man I've been meeting with, 18, and the author has wisdom far beyond his years. It's amazing that God chose this young man when he was only nine to change the lives of thousands in Africa through a ministry he formed called Hoops for Hope. And he's been building clinics, schools, and feeding the hungry there ever since.Live to Give is all about how God uses what we have to help others. One of the biggest things I took away from the book was Gutwein's illustration of the young boy who brought the loaves and fishes that Jesus used to feed the five thousand. The disciples went all through the crowd to see what food was available, and this was the only person who remembered to bring his lunch, and he gave it up to Jesus.Likewise we might be the only person in the crowd who has what God wants to use to help the multitude. Are we willing to give it up to Him?I'd highly recommend this book. I received a copy of this book free from the publisher for review. This review was originally published on Manifest Blog.

This was a very inspiring book. Most of the time while I was reading it I forgot how young the author is. He has a very mature way of writing. Then there were times that he would say something that would "snap" me back to reality and I'd realize just how young he was. It was amazing to read his story. To think, someone so young has done something so fantastic with his life already! Just imagine all the amazing things he's yet to accomplish.I liked that the message focused on the little boy who gives his lunch to Jesus, and Jesus performs a miracle using that boy's lunch. This boy and his seemengly meager lunch was used to feed thousands of people! While it's a story we're all familiar with I'd never really focused that much attention to it. Gutwein shows how something so simple can become something much more significant if we allow ourselves to give our gifts to God.This book was so well written, as I said earlier I kept forgetting how young the author is. But I think his youth is what makes this book so enjoyable. He's so enthusiastic about his message - the kind of enthusiasm children often have about everything. Not only does his enthusiasm show through but he's able to take the concepts he's trying to convey and make them so simple.I know this book is geared towards children, teens, and young adults but I think the message is one what we all can benefit from. As we get older I think we tend to feel as if we don't have anything left to contribute or that our gifts aren't as "strong" as they were when we were young and we had the enthusiasm and energy we used to have. But through Gutwein's words I realized that as long as I give my gifts - no matter how insignificant I may think they are - that they can be used to do something wonderful. My gifts can be a miracle for someone else. This was an amazing book with a awesome message. Not only is this book very encouraging it is also is energizing. It made me really look at my life and start working on some of my gifts so that I can start to help others with them. I've already got a few small projects ready to go!
