Funny Bones: Posada and His Day of the Dead Calaveras (Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal (Awards)), by Duncan Tonatiuh

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—Tonatiuh's latest delves into the life of artist and social commentator extraordinaire José Guadalupe Posada, best known for his literary calaveras, brief and amusing rhyming poems about skeletons dressed in clothes, going about their daily business. The beautifully expressive Day of the Dead-inspired illustrations on heavy paper pages sport borders of bones, grinning skeletons, and Tonatiuh's signature figures shown in profile, influenced by the ancient Mexican art of his ancestors. Simple yet effective sentences accompany step-by-step images detailing the artistic processes that Posada learned as a printer's apprentice: lithography, engraving, and etching. Reproductions of Posada's calaveras will help children appreciate Posada's passion for his profession, such as the broadside "Calavera Love," which depicts a gentleman skeleton proposing marriage; the poem concludes, "I am sorry, Señor. But that cannot be./You're handsome and all,/but too skinny for me!" Tonatiuh explains the poetry, posing questions about the artist's intentions and adding historical context, explaining the calaveras that Posada created in response to the Mexican Revolution. Extensive back matter includes links where students can see Posada's original work and an author's note that suggests using the calaveras "to learn and celebrate el Dia de Muertos." VERDICT A stunning work, with great possibilities for lesson plans or tie-ins with Day of the Dead.—Toby Rajput, National Louis University, Skokie, IL

Renowned author-illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh brings his signature style to Funny Bones: Posada and His Day of the Dead Calaveras, a fascinating biography of Mexican artist José Guadalupe (Lupe) Posada (1852-1913).Posada mastered lithography, engraving, and relief etching.Posada’s work moved from literary calaveras, which featured short humorous poems, to social and political commentary. At his death Posada was poor and his identity was relatively unknown until artists Jean Charlot and Diego Rivera wrote essays and publicized his work.Funny Bones is an all-inclusive book for adults as well as children, offering unforgettable illustrations, a glossary of terms, historical context, additional websites, and an extensive bibliography. This is a “worth every penny” book that I shared with a fourth grade class, my tutoring students, librarians, and my family.

The text is overlapping on the kindle version. I opened it on 3 different devices and it's the same on all. We can't even read it with the text all jumbled together.

We ❤️ this book! We celebrated by using foam printmaking to make Día de los Muertos designs after learning about Posada and his Catrina/other prints. The info made Posada Elem appropriate and brought up adult issues using child language and concepts. Great for Day of the Dead fun! 💀💀💀

The illustrations in Funny Bones are so whimsical, and macabre- I love it. I purchased this for my mother, a fourth grade teacher, and she is so excited to share this with her class for Cinco de Mayo. Because of the bold illustrations and cultural story line, I believe this book is versatile for many age groups. I bought this book because it was on the New York Times Best list for Illustrations in 2015.

This is a beautifully illustrated and informative book. The material is easy to understand and yet not patronizing. The fact that the illustrations are in the style of MesoAmerican artwork just makes it more endearing to me. Explaining the evolution of Posada's skill, the techniques he learned were parts of his story I had not previously known. I look forward to getting more books by Tonatiuh to share with my family in years to come.

DT's Funny Bones was a hit at our school's family literacy night. It was an informative story that was fun to read and share with students and parents alike. It seemed everyone knew about sugar skulls but nobody knew the story of the creator, Don Lupe. Great for bilingual readers at home or in school.

This book doesn't flow well and it doesn't hold kids' attention in my experience. I appreciate the history though.

Great text and illustrations.

Review

"Deborah R. Weiner chronicles the lives and communities of Jewish residents of small town Appalachia in this well researched book. . . . The book's careful reconstruction of the lives of those small town Jews no doubt appeals to descendents of the coalfield communities."--Journal of American History "It is a pleasure to encounter examples of the increasing - and increasingly sophisticated - literature on American Jewish life outside the urban Northeast. . . .She uses a wide range of archival sources and personally interviewed three dozen former and present Jewish residents, unearthing details that give the real flavor of their experience. . . . Her book helps us understand both place and people."--Journal of Southern History

Book Description

The stories of vibrant eastern European Jewish communities in the Appalachian coalfieldsCoalfield Jews explores the intersection of two simultaneous historic events: central Appalachia’s transformative coal boom (1880s-1920), and the mass migration of eastern European Jews to America. Traveling to southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, and southwestern Virginia to investigate the coal boom’s opportunities, some Jewish immigrants found success as retailers and established numerous small but flourishing Jewish communities.Deborah R. Weiner’s Coalfield Jews provides the first extended study of Jews in Appalachia, exploring where they settled, how they made their place within a surprisingly receptive dominant culture, how they competed with coal company stores, interacted with their non-Jewish neighbors, and maintained a strong Jewish identity deep in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. To tell this story, Weiner draws on a wide range of primary sources in social, cultural, religious, labor, economic, and regional history.  She also includes moving personal statements, from oral histories as well as archival sources, to create a holistic portrayal of Jewish life that will challenge commonly held views of Appalachia as well as the American Jewish experience.

The author asks in the intro - do we need yet another "Jews leave New York, head to the country, assimilate/don't assimilate; are/are not accepted;" story? Is it that different from the NJ farmers or the Plains states dry good retailers?Personally, I think the story is worth while, but as she points out, this gives you a whole other perspective on the live and business of mining. THAT story has been told from the Company POV and the miners' POV (and the miners' wives POV).But "Which Side Are You On" wasn't clear cut for the local Jewish retailer. They were in competition with the Company Stores, and the miners were thier customers - but they were business people and realized too that if the Company wasn't making a profit, in the end they too would be out of business. So it gives a rare glimpse of that conflict - not from a neutral or detached POV - but from a complex POV. And for all that, yes, I think it's a Jewish story worth telling too.

I bought this book after seeing an exerpt that contained a mention of my great grandfather. I am currently undergoing a family history project, and the book contains invaluable information about why the Appalachian Jew phenomenon took place. If the subject isn't relevant to your life, it is also a very well-written and interesting non-fiction read.

This is the definitive work on the entrance of Jews into the Appalachian coalfields - why they were there and how they succeeded under adverse conditions. It is a major work of tedious research and historic significance by Deborah Weiner. The immigrants who occupied the coalfields certainly included a small, but significant, number of Jewish immigrants seeking their place in the new American culture and working extremely hard to succeed.

This well researched, easily read history tells not only of Jews and coal mines, but also is a window into the way of life for Jewish families in early 20th century Appalachia.Deborah Weiner has recorded some of the stories I learned from my husband whose family is part of this history.Cecelia Euster(Mrs. Sterling Euster)

Interesting part of Appalachian history. Jews were peddlers/salesmen because they couldn't access professional schools like law, medicine, etc. at that time. Very few Jews left in these areas now.

My family is in the book...so how could it be bad!!!

My maternal great-grandparents (surname Totz) were among the earliest immigrants to the Coalfields. Deborah's well researched and beautifully written chronicle has deepened my understanding of the life and times of my antecedents from both a Jewish perspective and from the perspective of how quickly Jewish communities were built. I live in Huntington, West Virginia and our synagogue, B'nai Sholom, prominently displays Memorial Tablets and other artifacts from communities that closed down over the years. This book added depth to my perspective.

Deborah Weiner tells the fascinating and little-known story of the Jewish communities that once flourished in the coalfields of West Virginia, Kentucky and southwestern Virginia. Weiner displays a deep understanding of the hardscrabble mining communities she describes and provides us with additional evidence of the region's complexity and cultural heterogeneity. The story of the Jews who settled in the hills and valleys of coal country is a testament to the diversity of the heartland and a valuable contribution to our knowledge of immigration and American cultural and economic history.

I finished this masterpiece a couple of days ago. It was part of my anti-depression about my husband being in the hospital while I was home with fibro-flare. In this case, I would say misery loves company. Or... at least things aren't as bad as it was then. This was a birthday present from me--to me! I had picked up the whispersync for voice also so I was able to listen to Emily Bergl's narration. I have to admit she is not my favorite narrator. But once she was into the story I felt drawn in and forgot that there was a narrator.Laurie Halse Anderson always amazes me with her works. This book is no exception. Wow! The amount of research that she dug through to write this fiction is overwhelming! This is based on a real epidemic that happened just a few years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Yellow Fever takes over. But no one knows yet that it is due to the mosquitoes. Medicine was still in its infancy. Through Ms. Anderson, we get to see what could have happened to a young girl, her family and her community.Okay. Confession time. I have never been a history buff. I did have a fabulous professor in college that made me appreciate it a bit. That class was when I was in my forties. So imagine how long it was that I hated history. I think with books like this I might have been able to relate to historical events as a middle grader on. This younger generation is so lucky to have such writers as Laurie Halse Anderson!

I read this book with my daughter for her summer reading assignment. I think I enjoyed it more! I love historical fiction and this book was very interesting in describing the 1793 yellow fever plague in Philadelphia through the eyes of young 14 year old Mattie Cook. She lives with her mother and paternal grandfather. They run a coffee house in their house when the fever hits and empties the cities of its citizens, either through death or exodus to the country. This book depicts this very devastating time very realistically, while also making you care for Mattie and her family. I have always loved history and I love learning it through historical fiction. It is entertaining and informative at the same time. This book is appropriate for readers of all ages.

My son was assigned this book as summer reading as his school is using the storyline across the curriculum next year for some project based learning. I think the storyline is great for that purpose.Since I live in Philadelphia I was able to make some real world connections which helped to make the book more interesting. I am worried that my son will find it a bit dry and boring; he's not a big reader to begin with and some of the word usage may send him Googling.Overall, I did enjoy the story; it's not the page turner that some describe (in my opinion). I wish there were a little more character development and/or more detailed descriptions in the content to help in comprehension (more visualization, maps, etc.). I feel strongly that background knowledge should be presented at the beginning of the book rather than the end; in a classroom environment this can be done, but this book was assigned as summer reading. I think that young readers would benefit by having those prior knowledge connections in place as they read.

I loved this book myself when I was in 5th grade, so I bought it to read to my 5th graders in our small reading groups. The books came in excellent condition, and I think will become a favorite of my students as well as we read. Historical Fiction is great, and this book is well written to explain what was happening when people got sick with yellow fever in 1793.

I purchased this for my son's summer reading list, however, I chose to read it first. What a great period fiction book. After reading Fever 1793, I found myself researching the epidemic to find out what really happened. Ms. Anderson clearly did her research as the piece was accurate with what I was reading in the research. My son also enjoyed the book and we spent some time discussing the book, which as any parent with a 12 year old boy knows, isn't an easy task.I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction.

Fever 1793 begins with good historical information for the reader who may not be aware of the situation in Philadelphia. In the middle of the book, the story becomes more melodramatic as it focuses on the main character as she tries desperately to find her mother and a place for her grandfather and her as the fever engulfs the city. The book quickly ends in somewhat dramatic form as she comes of age. For Middle School students, this is an easy and good read and provides some historical context. As a Middle School Humanities teacher (English and History) I was hoping for more detail as to how our nation got to Philadelphia as students at this grade level have very little historical context. In order to fill the information gap, we spent about a week to learn about the Revolutionary War, the founding of our government, who were the principle players (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Rush, and others) in order to create a foundation and prior knowledge. Overall, the book is entertaining and an easy read for Middle School Students but be prepared to answer many questions about the fever, reasons as to why it got to Philadelphia, and its impact on the human body.

Well written and historically accurate. The problem is mine. I did not realize it was written for adolescent women. I realized this before I started to read it but decided to read it anyway. I read all of the Hunger Games books and enjoyed them even though they were written for the same readership. This was a fast read that pulled no punches relative to the tragic period of the yellow fever. It was informative and encouraged me to look up the history of the period. The characters were real with some depth. I enjoyed it.

Awful product, purely theoretical with most of the analysis and explanation "left to the reader."I could not recommend this to anyone. The back cover contains many theorems and formulae used commonly.

Product arrived exactly as promised. As some have mentioned, this is the Indian edition of the text, but I didn't see any problems with missing pages or sections in a different order as others have noted. Very helpful option for people who need the book but lack the funds to purchase the US version.

One of the better Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problem texts available. A must for those interested in upper level mathematics.

Exactly the same as the American version content-wise. Mine had a few pages out of order but who cares

I really enjoy reading the book. I am not taking a class on Fourier Series. I am EE student, so knowing how to calculate a Fourier Series is very important, also it becomes very useful when you are expected to know Fourier along with Laplace Transformation.Easy to read, able to see follow along each line of equation.I own both Fourier Series, and Complex Variables by the same author.

reasonable price

arrived on time, book status is as described

Received on time. Great product! very satisfied with the services and I recommend to a friend!

I have to say, that from just reading the blurb, that I had my doubts, that this could possibly work out for Gloria and Jack, (and for Barney and Beatrice, for that matter!) Author Aurora Hanson will work it out, beautifully - after taking the reader on an exciting adventure! I fell for siblings Gloria and Barney, from the very first page. Brother and sister, who were forced to fend for themselves, on a failing, Wyoming, sheep ranch, without parents, after their parents were killed by The Crow. Barney feels terribly guilty that he was unable to save their parents, and is likely to misconstrue any man's intentions towards his sister. Yet, Barney longs to make a life and take a wife, but feels he can't make that move, until his sister's life is settled. An innocent trip into Rock Springs, and soon the siblings are up to their necks in a plot to kidnap the wealthy railroad heir, Jack Rollins. Danger, excitement, thrills, suspense, and in the midst of it all, romance. "A Sweet Abduction In The Wild West," by Aurora Hanson, is a thrilling read. I received this book as an ARC and I volunteered this review.

Wow! Talk about a complete flip. Aurora really nails this extremely riveting tale with the a smooth flowing storyline and incredibly strong plot draw you in deeper, holding your attention from start to finish. A rollercoaster ride of emotions and events that detail all the hardships, trials and tribulations that dog their every step. All the drama, heartache, uncertainty, fear, danger and suspense really bring this read roaring to life brilliantly. Twists and turns abound with unexpected circumstances that make for one thrilling experience. The characters are complex and believable with such depth and individuality it's easy to relate. You feel everything the characters feel, like you're part of the read instead of on the sidelines. The scenes are written with such realism it really pulls this little gem together beautifully. Incredible job Aurora, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

Pioneer parents murdered by the Crow, leaving brother and sister Big Barney and Clever Gloria on their own. Then bandits enlist their help by threatening innocent Beatrice whom Barney should be courting. Another innocent and railroad man new to town Jack Rollins is to be kidnapped and ransomed. Twists and surprises take this tale to another level of woe--but there is a completed story with HEA that is amazing and worth the read! Characters are well developed and lovable or complicated and hated.

This is a western story of intrigue and mayhem. It takes you on quite a wild journey through the wilds of Wyoming with a group of good and bad individuals who are all trying to outsmart the other group. It was interesting and danger driven, with 'good' winning in the end. It has a very different cast of characters who played their parts to the very end. The Epilogue was also an integral part of the whole finish of the story. Good job.

An interesting book filled with excitement, adventure and romance! Ms. Hanson has a talent for developing characters and plots that immediately grab and hold you until the very end of the book and this book is a classic example of that skill. I was given an ARC of the book and have voluntarily chosen to write this review. I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book and can heartily recommend it.

I was so hopeful to start with. Then the poor editing and proofreading bounded into the consciousness along with a storyline that dragged on. The Heroine was forever 'going to die', she was frequently shooting and killing or maiming others and actually should have been sent to jail or the gallows. The storyline went downhill with frequent religious references that just didn't hold up.

Couldn't put the book down until I reached the end. Spend a pleasant afternoon reliving the trials and tribulations of the characters . There is tons of suspense, twists and turns, romance, action and violence to transport the reader right into the time of the old wild west. Thank you for a lovely story.

This was a truly enjoyable read! I couldn’t put it down as soon as I got it. At first when I saw the preview, I was thinking Stockholm syndrome but the story proved me wrong. I loved the situations that went on and how each character reacted. I loved the adventure this story turned out to be.
