If you're a parent or student who is worried about paying for college, I feel your pain right now. I, too, have college on the brain - mainly because my oldest daughter is a senior in high school and she's presently filling out college applications.   She's a terrific student and is even vying to be a 2015 National Merit Scholarship winner. But it definitely hasn't escaped my husband and I that each of the schools on her list of college prospects has a sticker price between $55,000 and $65,000 per year.     With a son who is currently a freshman in high school, and another younger daughter now in third grade, I know we'll need help in tackling total college expenses for three kids. I also want our family to be smart about paying for college - and to avoid student loans if at all possible. That's why I've been boning up on the fiscal aspects of lowering college costs. And I'm confident that what I've learned will not only help my family - but yours as well. In fact, I'm super excited to announce that I've just finished two years' worth of research and writing about the financial side of higher education. The end result of my work is a new book series on controlling college costs and minimizing student loans. The flagship book, which launches this month, is called College Secrets: How to Save Money, Cut College Costs and Graduate Debt Free. The companion book in the series, which debuts November 2014, is called College Secrets for Teens: Money Saving Ideas for the Pre-College Years. With these two books, simply put, I've done a lot of the heavy lifting for you. For literally every college and pre-college expense you can think of - not to mention several dozen other college expenses of which most people aren't even aware - I explain how to either completely eliminate or greatly reduce those costs.   For example, in College Secrets I reveal: 22 hidden costs that college officials never talk about 24 tricks to slash in-state and out-of-state tuition costs 7 tips to keep room and board expenses under control 13 strategies to save money on books and supplies 14 lifestyle costs that students must manage wisely 6 do's and don'ts to avoid credit card debt in college 12 steps to boost your odds of winning scholarships and grants 15 common mistakes that reduce your financial aid In College Secrets for Teens, I tell you: 40 free pre-college programs at top U.S schools 30+ elite schools that pay for you to visit them 8 methods to pay nothing for college applications 10 foolish ways students pick the wrong colleges 5 critical rules to choose the best college for you The AP or Advanced Placement strategy that can save you up to $40,000 How I saved $4,000+ on my kids' pre-college programs Insider advice on getting in to your first-choice college or university And that's just some of what you'll learn in the College Secrets series. Unless you can simply write a check to pay for all college costs, I urge you to check out a copy of College Secrets. If you do, I make you this promise: this book can save you anywhere from $20,000 to $200,000 over a four-year education.

College Secrets is chock-full of useful information for parents who will be sending a child or two off to college in the next couple of years and afraid of what it will cost and how they will pay for it. In an era of sky rocketing tuition and an increasingly complicated financial aid process, every parent should make this their bedtime reading, especially if his/her child will be applying to college in 1-4 years.Throughout the book, Lynnette breaks down common misconceptions and myths about college costs, and shares anecdotes and advice from financial aid officers and other professionals on the "inside".The book is well researched, easy-to-follow and reads like friendly advice from your best friend who happens to be in the know.Eye-opening points include:-- You don't have to pay the sticker price for college (who knew?)-- You can negotiate financial aid (just don't call it negotiating)-- Don't assume you earn too much to qualify for an aid package-- Tuition, room and board is just the tip of the iceberg; colleges never give you an "all in" price-- Room & board at a public institution can top the cost of tuitionTips include how to:-- side-step paying top dollar for text books-- avoid hidden costs, fees and surcharges-- find money before you take out a loan or two-- borrow responsiblyA parent herself, Lynnette has practical advice on how to navigate the college industrial complex. As a financial planner, I found College Secrets incredibly useful to help me prepare clients trying to get ahead of the tsunami of college costs so that their children aren't mired in debt upon graduation. I wish my millennial clients had read this book before they took out those hefty unsubsidized loans that will take them a lifetime to repay. This book is for any parent or student who wants to know the real costs of a university degree, the ins and outs of financial aid, the truth about borrowing and where to look for scholarships.
