For the average user, increased functionality is a great burden, adding to the recurrent chorus that plays, "computers are hard, mysterious, unwieldy things." (An average user, Cooper asserts, who doesn't think that way or who has memorized all the esoteric commands and now lords it over others, has simply been desensitized by too many years of badly designed software.) Cooper's writing style is often overblown, with a pantheon of cutesy terminology (i.e., "dancing bearware") and insider back-patting. While I agree with many things Alan Cooper says about the challenges of designing user friendly technologies for normal end users, I think his attitude is a bit pessimistic about how engineers and programmers design technologies that are yet to come... I think it is better to encourage Universities and Colleges to require a certain amount of technical support and customer support courses in additional to standard social sciences courses required for a typical science major for Engineering and computer science students to graduate... This should also be required for any student who hopes to get into any field of study where work in this field would affect end users of products and services rendered to them. Engineers and Technical workers need to take responsibility for their work and help end users with their products. Furthermore, licensing for Engineers and Technical workers should not only require ability to design products and technologies (i.e. traditional assessment materials), but also require ability to communicate effectively with end users and support their products and technologies. This might be a great book for young students in high school and college who want to study Engineering, IT Services, Computer Sciences or related fields.

Cooper has done a good job of pointing out common problems in software design. The book is well written, with interesting examples and anecdotes to illustrate the author's points. While most of the book focuses on "off the shelf" products, I think the author's arguments are even more relevant to custom software development. If you already believe that software is poorly designed, this book is unlikely to be a revalation to you. It will, however, give you some ammunition to use in discussions with "apologists".I agree with the earlier reviewer, who said that the people most needing to read it probably won't. This would seem to be a great book for development managers and purchasers of software, but I think the only people likely to read the whole thing are professional developers.I have two criticisms of the book (for which I give it 4 out of 5 stars): too often it comes across as an advertisement for the author's company; and I would have appreciated more "how-to" information. To this latter point, the author himself says in his preface that he had intended to write a "how-to" book, but was talked into writing a "business case" book instead. I hope that he will soon follow up this effort with the planned "how-to" book.A final question -- what is with these 1 star reviews? I've read a few of them now, for different books, and I have to question whether the reviewer has even read the book. If so, they seem to have completely missed the point. At the very least, if giving a 1 star review, please provide some detailed criticisms so I can decide whether I am likely to share your opinion.

From a software engineer's perspective, this book is fairly on point. However, it does come off a bit as an extended personal rant against engineers involved in the design of devices and systems the author has interacted with and only provides perfunctory guidance on how to improve things. Suggested read from an HCI professor, it makes a point but isn't as informative as one would hope.

This was a textbook for my Interaction Design class, but the ideas are valid in boat loads of circumstances. I highly recommend it to everyone, in fact, not just programmers and designers. While you're at it, be sure to pick up The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less, which solidifies his ideas from the consumer side of things.I'm a junior high teacher by trade, so I'm going to particularly recommend it to teachers. Students, just like tech consumers, come in a variety of levels of understanding. One of the biggest challenges is to cater a lesson to smart students, slow students, and all the students in between. Teachers, like programmers, like all of us, tend to assume that others' experience is similar to their own, so they plan with themselves in mind. This book helps explain how to break out of that mentality and design for everyone.

I like Alan Cooper. He is entertaining, thoughtful and has numerous amusing anecdotes and analogies. He is a "voice sounding in the wilderness" in the software community about usability. Unfortunately, I think his point is lost somewhat in the marketing message and sensationalism of this book. Who is the book written for - the software developer or the frustrated user? The first chapter sounds like a Luddite rebellion against computers. It is hard to imagine the person writing that chapter as a computer professional. Using the analogy of a secretary who doesn't know how to save files to a folder as an example of poor design is blaming the programmer for poor training. True, software is often developed by programmers who barely get real requirements, develop in a vacuum and then force feed the end result to the user. And ironically, Alan Cooper invented Visual Basic, which ushered in Rapid Application Development (RAD) programming (good!) but adds the tendency for quick prototype demos to get shipped as "Version 1.0" because the CEO or CIO says,"hey it works now" (bad!).These shortcomings are not solved by adding a layer of another design person partially disconnected from the user, or making the screen prettier. It is by adapting the Extreme Programming/Agile programming methods of including the user in everything from design to testing, so the software reflects how the user does business.I still liked the book, just not clear on the message.

I purchased this book at a Barnes and Noble. I thought it would be a good resource for students I tutor SAT Math to. This book is full of blatant mistakes, which really take away from learning. They are very basic mistakes too such as the square root of 25 is 3 and 150 divided by 2 is 125. I am not sure if that is the norm for these exam review books, but seeing so many obvious mistakes made using this book as a resource a total joke.

Using this in Correctional Institution in addition to other TABE and SAT books. Seems to help!

At first I was rather intimidated by the book and the project. But after studying it, you come to realise that it isn't all that bad. It's quite straight forward. Some things I wished I had known before embarking on the project. You will need a good ruler, blade/cutter for scoring edges. There's quite a bit of actual precise cutting to do, and of course quite a bit of gluing. So patience in this project is a must. I would also allow a few days or a week if you are working with a deadline. Make sure you color before you glue the castle together. Inside the book there are two castle options to choose from which I thought was nice. The paper is light yet sturdy and quite easy to glue quickly. One thing to note, once the castle is complete dont expect something really big. It definitely was smaller than I thought but certainly a good size for a 4th grade medieval project.Overall, I was very pleased with the book, they made it relatively easy to complete.I would recommend this if you are looking to build a castle and have the structure already marked and ready for you to put together.

This was a difficult project, with lots o f careful cutting and folding required. It was definitely not for anyone under maybe ten years old. It is not printed in color either, and makes no recommendations about how to shade it, which I think would improve the finished look considerably. The written information was interesting for me, but again, above the heads of the short set,

The pages of this book are just a little thicker than the 24# bond paper used in printers for everyday use. Not very sturdy at all. The castle parts are low resolution black and white prints. Most of the parts for the castles span more than one page and have a fold and staple holes in the middle of the part. The book did contain castles so it received a 2 stars rating instead of a 1 star rating.

This is a great book, very self explanatory. However, if you are thinking that it is a big castle, think again. It is about the size of a legal size sheet of paper. Anyhow, a great product and very detailed. No for a kid project.

This could be a good project for a middle school student. Be aware that the pages need to be colored and could be time consuming (4 or more evenings to construct. Student would need a good sharp sissors and an excto knife to cut out the castles.

A great book for kids and adults too! You will spend time building a castle from the beginning to the finished product and you will have fun all the way there, in fact... the kids will have a hard time going to bed until it is finished.

In 2003 Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, who was in charge of the Iraq post-war reconstruction, offered up some advice stating,"Tourism is going to be something important in that country as soon as the security situation is resolved, and I think that will be resolved as the Iraqis take over more and more responsibility for their own government." (Source: George Packer. The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, NY 2005, pp. 242). It is now 2015 and with the rise of ISIL, the security situation in Iraq has deteriorated greatly. Last month, Bradt released the 2nd edition of their Iraq guidebook, first published in 2002. It was clearly a bold move as between 2003 and 2009, tourism in Iraq had all but disappeared except for religious tourism to the holy Shia sites of Karbala and Najaf. In 2009, one of the book's authors,Geoff Hann, organized a tour to the country which encompassed almost the length of Iraq from Kurdistan down to Basra stopping at many archaeological sites along the way. From then on, Mr. Hann has led very comprehensive tours to the country annually. His tour company is one of less than a handful to do that. Clearly Iraq is not a travel destination that can easily be arranged, and the number of tourists (not the religious type) that make it to the country annually probably do not reach 3 digits. It is in this context that I find the publication of this guidebook a real surprise and kudos to Bradt for making this possible.. This book is written to be a guidebook only. It will not go into depth about Mesopotamian and Iraqi history, nor does it strive to be an archaeological catalog of the ancient sites. Alongside the descriptions of the many cities and sites, one is surprised to see listings which include "how to get there", rankings of hotels, shopping, lists of local restaurants, etc. How many tourists actually get into Iraq to see the sites described in the book? Unfortunately the answer is "not many". Some of the sites have now sadly been destroyed by ISIL, and the book does mention this; BUT, the book is a good read, well written by people who have traveled extensively in the country, and and gives hope that in the future tourism will definitely become an important factor in the Iraqi economy. The only criticism I have is that it would be nice to have the inclusion of more photographs.

I wish I could write a more positive review about this book. I know how amazing a first experience outside of one's own country can be. Even the smallest events can be so exciting because they are so new and so completely different then what one is accustomed to back home. But unless you have the gift for storytelling, often those experiences don't translate well to others. Case in point: the episode when the author describes her dilemma of having to balance her plate and glass of water while trying to read a book and avoid the ants that she assumes are in the grass, while Her two Zambian workers watch her children, is nearly infuriating with its utter lack of anything remotely of interest. I ask myself, am I really spending my precious time reading about a woman who is living in Zambia and the most interesting thing she can find to write about is this. Anyway, I regret to say, I would not recommend this book.

This book is written by the wife of a British doctor who is transplanted to Lusaka, Zambia while he does research. While the book contains a few interesting/entertaining stories of navigating life in a completely different culture, the author comes off at some points as whiny and over-stressed. This book does a good job of portraying life in Lusaka (as an expat), and a few trips outside the capital, but I wish the author had had more chances to get out into the rest of Zambia and experience life in the village - the life that most Zambians live. In the end, she decides that she can handle life in Zambia - with the help of her maid, nanny and other staff, of course.

It gives plenty of information and photos of all my favorites....gives examples and info to have success with them, I recommend it highly!!!!

More time is spent on discussing basic aquarium set-up and care, than on Malawi Cichlids. Must have had commercial sponsers, they are mentioned throughout. Other than a beginner at cichlids, nothing much new to be learned. Scientific names are outdated, but in the fast changing world of Malawi Cichlids that's not surprising. Better be up on your metric system, there's not an inch, foot, yard, pound or gallon in the book!

i see that the paperback book is normally $30.00, i purchased the kindle version for $2.99 i wonder if i got the same as the paperback? Missing is page after page of screen shots of tool commands, which is good. The names of programs are given but it is up to the reader to look elsewhere for user instructions. A good place to learn about the basics of hacking.

I am a total newbie when it comes to hacking. This book keeps it high level enough where a person with little to no experience can understand and apply the lessons and examples. The author has amazing skills in explaining the technical subjects in easy ways without spending much time in theories. I bought BLACK'S LAW DICTIONARY for two basic reasons.First, the Abridged Fifth Edition was very affordable.And I also wanted to compare it with the legal dictionary that I already have.The only negative that I can think of is the age of this edition.Despite that, I have been very happy this older edition.It's a comprehensive list of terms with over 16,000 definitions. That's considerably more than Oran's Dictionary of the Law has.I found the definitions to be thorough.The pronunciation guide is another feature that I appreciate in BLACK'S.An added bonus is the U.S. Constitution in the back of the dictionary.If you are searching for an affordable, comprehensive law dictionary this edition is worthy of consideration.

I'm currently a 1L law student and have used this pocket dictionary a ton since I first got it.As a student I have access to the online edition through Nexis but I've actually found this to be easier since the search tool is not always as good as you would expect and just getting to the online version can take longer than opening up this book most of the time.I also am more of a kinetic learner and have found that the print edition helps me to retain better. Plus I just love books so it's more enjoyable to me to look it up in a book than online (and in law school every small pleasure helps).Definitely recommend it. I've found it useful and more importantly more enjoyable than an online version.UPDATE: I'm now a 3L and it's true that you don't use this dictionary as much you would expect to, especially after 1L. But I do still pull it out every so often, and seeing definitions in print form helps me to remember them.I will say though that part of me wishes I had gone with the full sized version instead of the pocket edition. It is frustrating in some upper level classes, like Property, when you go to look for a word and it isn't there.If you are concerned about the weight you carry, you will find that you will get better at carrying only what you need (or just get used to tugging around a ton of books all the time). So the pocket edition is not essential.Overall, I don't regret buying it as it's been helpful enough to warrant the 35 bucks you will spend on it. Plus Black's is the best law dictionary out there. But, if you are short on money and are trying to decide between the pocket edition and the full edition go with the full edition.

When compared to the newest, 9th edition, this 5th edition puts that one to shame! And, rightfully so! For example: I could NOT believe the definitions in 9th edition book! They are supposed to be 'legal' definitions! Definitions of words when they are used in laws and Courts, not as defined in Websters which is everyday use.Fence, for example in the 5th edition is:A hedge, structure, or partition, erected for the purpose of inclosing a piece of land, or to divide a piece of land ito distinct portions, or to separate two contiguous estates. (and more)In the 9th edition, it does NOT mention the definition shown above, but goes on ad nauseum to define how drugs and stolen goods can be sold to a fence. Not one mention of the "fence" as it pertains to real property. NOT ONE WORD!!!However, the new Editor's name, in gilded letters, LARGE gilded letters, is on the leather bound cover: Bryan A. Garner, Editor in Chief.Don't waste your money on the 9th or 8th edition.

I sought out this product because it is the last edition before the NWO began changing the dictionary. If you don't believe it, compare the definitions for the USA. The USA or US now ceases to exist legally. Now I must get a ninth edition for the new words that have since been created.This particular book is nicely padded, has a gorgeous cover, and in near perfect shape except for the damage described by seller. Seller nicely wrapped the product for shipping and it arrived within the shipping parameters. I would buy from this seller again since he gave an accurate description and knows how to wrap an item for shipping.

My first thought when I found out I was reading this book was "What, another devotional? Really? Thanks Mom!" It turns out it was a really good book. Sadie told about her funny stories, serious stories and times when she let fear overpower her. She told how she overcame her fear with the help of God. I really enjoyed the encouraging notes she put in there.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! I've read it from cover to cover twice. Sadie writes about a fear in her life in each chapter. She then goes on to describe how she overcame that fear. Each chapter contains a question to ask yourself about fear and a challenge which is essentially a tool to help you overcome that fear. Each chapter also contains a sample prayer to help you overcome your fear. This book probably targets high school, college age, and young adults, however I think people of any age will find it very helpful. If you struggle with fear of any sort, I cannot recommend this book enough!

These side stories include, What is on Dogobertâ€™s Tomb? How did Les Halle disappear? Where have all the colleges gone? Who was Nicolas Flamel? These stories are almost more interesting than the main text.One does not need to be a Francophile to enjoy this book, but this book will make you one.Good book, history brilliantly told, good translation. What could go wrong? Well, ....Other customer reviews of this book have complained about the paper on which the text is printed. I dismissed these comments and purchased the book anyway. While the book is highly recommended, these reviewers were correct. The paper the publisher used is cheap, shoddy, and rough.We are not talking about acid-free paper. I have seen comic books printed on better paper. I have seen newspapers PRINTED SIXTY YEARS AGO in better shape. No exaggeration, the paper used for this book feels like sandpaper. I still give this book five stars for the excellent stories told.Shame on the publisher, St. Martins Griffin, for disrespecting the reading public by printing such a cheap edition of this book!

What a fascinating history! Visiting "the city of light" as often as I do, I really thought I knew alot about it. After having read this book, I realized I didn't know half as much as I thought I did! It is filled with historical facts and yet it is not "preachy" about the events leading up to the city's prominence as a vibrant part of Europe. All in all, a terrific volume, one that will indeed delight Francophones, Francophiles and visitors alike. In addition: an award should go to the translator. A book of very interesting information pertaining to Paris' history; yet, with the most intriguing manner of explanation based on l'Metro. For those who enjoy Paris history, seek new ways of learning it and possibly collect such informative books, this is for you! It is the author's flair for writing that causes this book's account of history such an enjoyable treat.

I read it in French (I'm French born and raise in Paris), so I can say that I know Paris very very well. I actually learnt a lot of stuff reading this book. I'm offering it to an American friend who lived in Paris for 2 years. She had a blast, and is going back at least twice a year for fun.I would recommend reading this book only if you're (very) familiar with the city, if not it may be overwhelming. Happy reading

This is a fantastic book; a very interesting way to explore the history of a place. If you've been or are going to Paris, I recommend reading this book. I wish it had photos, although I've spent some fun time on the Internet exploring various places mentioned in the book.

An excellent guide to the history of Paris via the Metro. While the book is arranged chronologically, each chapter begins with a map and a discussion of the vestiges of Paris' past that can be found from a particular metro stop. The book tends to falter towards early modern and modern times.

A well-written history of Paris through the Metro stops and nearby architectural remnants. Paris is wonderful and even more enchanting if you realize that the beautiful door you see near the National Archives is actually the entry of a mansion built in 1380 (L'hÃ´tel de Clisson). The history is presented through brief vignettes that reference locations shown on a map for each chapter, each of which represent a century in Paris's history. Highly recommended!

This was a pleasant read for anyone who is interested in the history of Paris and some of the traces that remain of its past. It is not the best written book, but I still learned a lot. It did gloss over certain things rather quickly such as Notre Dame cathedral. The strongest part of the book is the earlier history. The closer we get to the present the more one needed a solid foundation in French history to understand what was going on. Overall though, I did enjoy reading this book and using google maps to get a better present day view of the sites that the author talks about.
