It's a good baseball book, in spite of the author. The chapter on Daryle Kile, particularly pages 212-213, is wonderful and sums up baseball and life quite well. The stories of Rick Ankiel, Cal Eldred and the continual homage to Albert Pujols all make this book worthwhile. Mr. Bissinger is at his best when he gets out of his own way and writes what Tony La Russa shares without adding his own opinions. Mr. La Russa's discussions about how his baseball career negatively effected his marriage and his kids is poignant and appreciated.Additional nuggets on Edgar Renteria's 1997 WS-winning at-bat, JD Drew's effort and Mr. La Russa's self-imposed 24-hour gag rule are all wonderful. They flow out of Mr. La Russa himself, and Mr. Bissinger does a good job during those moments in not adding his own opinions or smarminess to them. The parts of the book that cover stolen bases, pitchouts and hitting are a bit pedantic and are unnecessary for this audience. The major problem with this book is that Mr. Bissinger often comes across as an adolescent prep-schooler who is in love with his own smug opinions. Several times, he attempts to heighten the drama in places where it doesn't need it. His disregard (really, jealousy) of Michael Lewis is apparent in his dismissal of "Moneyball" and analytics. Some examples of Mr. Bissinger's failings in this book:(1) In the preface, he claims that the new breed of baseball managers and fans who are analytically based could not "possibly love it" (xxii) and don't have "the sense of history." (xxiii). I couldn't disagree more. They love baseball, watch an incredible amount of it an absolutely understand and appreciate the history of the game. Billy Beane, Theo Epstein, Joe Sheehan, Gary Huckabay, Jay Jaffe, Steven Goldman, Christina Kharl, Nate Silver, and myself included.(2) "The rivalry between the Cubs and the Cardinals is probably the oldest and perhaps the best in baseball, no matter how the Red Sox and Yankees spit and spite at each other...That's a pair of bratty high-priced supermodels trying to trip each other in their stilettoson the runway. But the Cards-cubs epic is about roots and geography and territorial rights. It's entwined in the Midwestern blood and therefore refreshing and honest and even heroic." (20) You can hear pre-echoes of Sarah Palin's mis-informed "real America" comments, and writing like this brings sympathy to Bob Knight's nasty statement about sportswriters: "All of us learn to write in 2nd grade. Most of us move on to better things." (It also ignores the Dodgers-Giants rivalry, which is as significant and storied as the Yankees-Red Sox)(3) "When La Russa came back a few minutes later, he was smiling as broadly as the kid who go the train set for Christmas and the lifetime subscription to Penthouse." (222) This is something that Matt Taibbi would proudly write in his beyond-over-the-top Rolling Stone pieces. It is ill-fitting for serious writing.(4) The Afterword is the most offensive piece of the book. Here, Mr. Bissinger lays out a full assault on Michael Lewis, Billy Beane, "Moneyball," and analytics. It's sad. In spite of himself, he's written a pretty good baseball book. If he had gotten out of his own way, it could have been a classic.

Love him or loathe him, by many measures Tony LaRussa is one of the most successful managers in MLB history, especially in recent decades. To create "3 Nights in August" (3NIA), he allowed Buzz Bissinger unprecedented access to his team, his staff, and his inner thoughts and feelings. There are still areas which are off limits, of course, but this access allowed Buzz Bissinger to create a more insightful baseball book than the typical "fan book". For those baseball fans who imagine themselves to be managers (which is probably most fans other than casual fans), 3NIA provides details on what the job is actually like - but it also leaves the fan/reader thirsting for even more.3NIA is a peak inside the mind of a major league manager, showing the pressures and challenges he has to deal with, and the decisions he has to make over the course of a season, a three game series with an arch-rival in a pennant race, and individual games and at bats. Baseball is a game with many layers and complexities, and 3NIA reveals many of the games within the game, the sub plots, and the background. First and foremost is the human element, in determining the composition of the team (the roster), the roles for the different players, and motivating them to perform their best (something that not even a master like La Russa is capable of doing all the time with all his players). Dealing with injuries, adversities and bruised egos is another major element of a manager's job, and 3NIA reveals many challenges in these areas that don't usually make the papers. This reminds us armchair managers that, when we criticize the decisions of the manager of our favorite team, we simply do not have access to all the information that he does.3NIA also delves into the strategic game decisions that a manager makes. These are important, and La Russa is definitely one of the more creative, innovative MLB managers in this respect, but 3NIA shows that managing the human element is even more important. As all managers do, La Russa has to decide when to punish, encourage and reward, and how best to use these tools to extract maximum performance from his players, some of whom care deeply about being the best they can be, and some who do not.3NIA also reveals the personal and lifestyle challenges that La Russa has faced over the course of his career as a manager. He himself is very dedicated to his job and being the best he can be, and his family has paid a significant price because of this. While Cardinal fans will appreciate 3NIA the most, the book definitely makes worthwhile reading for baseball fans in general.

"Beautiful. Just beautiful baseball."Tony La Russa is one of the most successful managers in baseball history. Every game is a lengthy epic with countless stories and numerous subplots. La Russa is meticulous, always scheming for an edge. He and his army of coaches keep detailed notes on every player and every pitcher in the league including their own.Though the season may seem long and tedious, each game counts. A whole season can change in one game. La Russa knows this and he works tirelessly to win each day.Bissinger's 3 Nights in August is exhaustive look into the mind of Tony La Russa. Though the game has changed significantly over the years with home runs, deep bullpens, sabermetrics, and so on; nothing can replace experience.La Russa managed with an unmatched intensity though he remained stoic and poker-faced. With his retirement at the end of the 2011 season after the Cardinals magical comeback against the Texas Rangers, baseball lost one of its most respected managers.Anyone who loves baseball, who loves the nuances of the game, the joys and the heartbreaks, will love this book.

#3,944,114 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is an excellent book! It explains many things I've noticed but didn't comprehend well in FreeBSD and Linux. The authors are very gifted at communicating, a rare gift concerning tech book and online doc authors (generally, such works so dull, they may merely serve (too often) as ambiguous reference material). The authors also give some interesting history about FreeBSD and its competitors; they give a very compelling case for the OS, which was first being developed in the era of the first moon landing and in the heart of the cold war.The authors give the steps for setting up the GUI, and many options for this (this is bedeviling for many of us--a default GUI doesn't "pop-up" after install as in commercially-supported Linux, Windows, and the Mac OS--one "builds" the GUI from a low level with desired features), and, also, the authors explain the reasons for having to set up the GUI (the OS is favored by server users who prefer a lean command-line interface). The bewildering VI editor is thoughtfully explained in some detail as well: It is a high-powered, yet, heavily keyboard-command dependent (and user-unfriendly) text editor that often is necessary for system configuration and software development. It's not user friendly (or "intuitive") because it was developed in the aforementioned cold-war era of really limited computer power and storage: Needless to say, it hasn't changed much....The book, which I haven't yet finished but am eagerly reading daily, gives many caveats (such as configuring the sync settings of monitors correctly). FreeBSD is not a good OS for a PC newbie to learn to use (at least not without a knowledgeable mentor); nevertheless, I think this is a very good intro book for gamers and high-level techies--these may wish to use FreeBSD in advanced ways such as for servers, developing firewalls, as well as for common internet/e-mail and other networking tasks (such tasks are inherently more secure and speedy on FreeBSD)--or for those well-exposed to Linux, or Apple OSX--cousin-OSes or, in the latter case, a direct descendant....

As a FreeBSD enthusiast I could say that everything is on the handbook, but I'd be a liar. Everything about FreeBSD is on FreeBSD.For all those who have heard about FreeBSD and desire to start from scratch (i.e. moving from Windows), you'll need all the help you can get: you'll have to look for the Complete FreeBSD book, the Handbook (printed or online) and will be surfing the FreeBSD man pages after the instalation... and then you'll have to use your own creativity imagination and all the internet search engines available to understand and implement this beautiful OS. But the results are excellent, the stability and security that FreeBSD offers are outstanding.FreeBSD Unleashed is certainly a book which has many updated information and shares many common points with the books mentioned above, however, all of them complement each other. I certainly recommend this book for everyone who needs a good reference book for FreeBSD and already owns the others mentioned.Good Luck!

Great product, good price!

I preorder this book, and waited by 2 months until it was published, but FreeBSD 6 really was a good choice. It is well wrote, but for my is necessary a better chapter reference, because I used it like a reference book and some time I need to look in the entire book to find a specific topic.

This book isn't for me.You would think a FreeBSD book in 2006 will tell you things like how to keep your system safe with binary updates, or walk you through a decent CUPS installation, or mention using OpenBSD's firewall tool. It's just the same-old same-old. There's little here that can't be learned from the Handbook or Greg Lehey's The Complete FreeBSD. And both are free. To be fair, there is new stuff here, like installing the official Sun JDK port for FreeBSD, or using portupgrade, but I expected a little more thoroughness and variation in choices in the areas of security, ports and printing. Also, I think a chapter about contributing to the FreeBSD ports tree would have been good to have. However, if you're new to Unix/FreeBSD, than I think you will enjoy the chatty style instead of the rather more terse style of The Handbook.

You’re either a fan of this series and the people in it and the way events tend to unfold and tie together, or you’re not and likely dropped out some time ago and are just checking out reviews due to morbid curiosity. If you’re totally new and are trying to read this book without reading others that came before it, you’re going to be pretty lost and bereft of the richness of the world that the author has built over several books. This is a fun series that does deal with heavy themes like familial betrayal and murder and greed, death and loss and grief. But it doesn’t rub your nose in gore and brutality. It’s a sophisticated cozy mystery that manages to keep your favorite core characters pretty clean and free of the evil that infests even some of the nicer seeming residents of the town.Walt and Danielle are progressing nicely in their relationship. They’re not rushing anything and are developing their wonderful friendship in a charming way that allows us to see Walt take in the world as a living person, instead of the ghost that he’s been for almost a century. There are many indications the friendship will indeed evolve into a beautiful romantic relationship, but circumstances do dictate that we are nowhere near a proposal on bended knee. Especially since the “circumstances” largely involve Walt hopping around with one leg in a cast. It was pretty clever of the author to use this as a natural barrier ensuring Dani and Walt don’t rush things and focus instead on Walt adjusting to life again. It’s a very rewarding experience made even more so by some lovely surprises the author has cooked up for us. It’s rare in the harsh cynical worlds that so many other authors create in other genres that we get the cake and get to eat it, too. And speaking of cakes, enjoy Walt discovering that Danielle’s cakes taste as good as they smell.I’m very happy that we are so far into the series and the author has not run out of steam nor lost anything magical in bringing Walt back to life for us and for Dani. This series has leaped to the head of the pack as my favorite among the cozy mysteries I follow since discovering this genre about a year ago.

It was interesting to see how having a physical body would affect Walt but otherwise this book with its convoluted plot between the Bondoni brothers, Mac and Clint was very confusing. Throw in a mysterious Russian woman for good measure and your head is spinning. And now Danielle turns into J. B. Fletcher and is the one who solves the mystery, despite there being 3 capable detectives and 2 F.B. I. Men on scene. The author is clearly reaching in this book and the plausibility is lacking. The whole thing has become cartoonist with too many ghosts and too many people who can see them. And while I can accept ghosts and someone seeing them, the idea that a ghost can enter someone else's body and then that body somehow physically changes into the ghosts body is really too much for me to believe. So, while I have enjoyed the series, this is the last book for me.

This story, and this series, left me with a sense of rightness, of things happening as they should for these mature and gracious characters. Even as things develop between the primary characters throughout the series, the pace is rational and hopeful; this series never leaves the reader hurting.I also thoroughly enjoy learning new things with each of these stories. Things I have googled so far, prompted by this series: mansard roofs; Packard Coupe; fedoras; flappers; negging; pin striped suits; million dollar necklaces; men's underwear in the 1920's; marriages of double twins; Victorian parlors; Astoria, Oregon; various women's fashions which did and did not fit the 1920's, mentioned in the stories; KKK activities in Oregon; brindle pit bulls; wire versus whale bone women's undergarments, etc. I love the specific facts mentioned in the stories, and I love being able to visualize these two colliding worlds, Walt's and Danielle's. Actually, they're not colliding. They are gracefully woven together.

So far one of the worst ones in the series, although based on honest reviews I've seen of the other books, it wouldn't surprise me if there were worse ones yet.At this point, after so many books, they are all beginning to get stale, they all run together, almost all of them involve money, some criminals and the main character. The writing is becoming tedious and boring. It seems like the characters never learn any lessons, they never have any sort of character growth, they just are who they are and continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. Here's an idea, maybe instead of just taking the same concept that you've used since the first book, maybe you actually mix it up a little bit and change the pace up? For a book that's filed under paranormal fiction, there's surprisingly very little paranormal stuff taking place.

There are very few series that I have followed continually. They either become routine and boring or change the plot and characters to the extent that I would not have started them in the first place.I thought Book 16 "The Ghost and the Doppelganger" had reached this point. My spouse thought differently and had already pre-ordered "The Ghost of Second Chances". I only began reading this book 16 when I had nothing left in my queue. Most of the way through, I found it interesting but believed it was taking the series in a direction that was of no interest to me.Near the end of the book, the plot changed and became more interesting. I think I would have preferred Walt as a ghost; but, am willing to see where he is taken in the next book.
