I finished this masterpiece a couple of days ago. It was part of my anti-depression about my husband being in the hospital while I was home with fibro-flare. In this case, I would say misery loves company. Or... at least things aren't as bad as it was then. This was a birthday present from me--to me! I had picked up the whispersync for voice also so I was able to listen to Emily Bergl's narration. I have to admit she is not my favorite narrator. But once she was into the story I felt drawn in and forgot that there was a narrator.Laurie Halse Anderson always amazes me with her works. This book is no exception. Wow! The amount of research that she dug through to write this fiction is overwhelming! This is based on a real epidemic that happened just a few years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Yellow Fever takes over. But no one knows yet that it is due to the mosquitoes. Medicine was still in its infancy. Through Ms. Anderson, we get to see what could have happened to a young girl, her family and her community.Okay. Confession time. I have never been a history buff. I did have a fabulous professor in college that made me appreciate it a bit. That class was when I was in my forties. So imagine how long it was that I hated history. I think with books like this I might have been able to relate to historical events as a middle grader on. This younger generation is so lucky to have such writers as Laurie Halse Anderson!

I read this book with my daughter for her summer reading assignment. I think I enjoyed it more! I love historical fiction and this book was very interesting in describing the 1793 yellow fever plague in Philadelphia through the eyes of young 14 year old Mattie Cook. She lives with her mother and paternal grandfather. They run a coffee house in their house when the fever hits and empties the cities of its citizens, either through death or exodus to the country. This book depicts this very devastating time very realistically, while also making you care for Mattie and her family. I have always loved history and I love learning it through historical fiction. It is entertaining and informative at the same time. This book is appropriate for readers of all ages.

My son was assigned this book as summer reading as his school is using the storyline across the curriculum next year for some project based learning. I think the storyline is great for that purpose.Since I live in Philadelphia I was able to make some real world connections which helped to make the book more interesting. I am worried that my son will find it a bit dry and boring; he's not a big reader to begin with and some of the word usage may send him Googling.Overall, I did enjoy the story; it's not the page turner that some describe (in my opinion). I wish there were a little more character development and/or more detailed descriptions in the content to help in comprehension (more visualization, maps, etc.). I feel strongly that background knowledge should be presented at the beginning of the book rather than the end; in a classroom environment this can be done, but this book was assigned as summer reading. I think that young readers would benefit by having those prior knowledge connections in place as they read.

I loved this book myself when I was in 5th grade, so I bought it to read to my 5th graders in our small reading groups. The books came in excellent condition, and I think will become a favorite of my students as well as we read. Historical Fiction is great, and this book is well written to explain what was happening when people got sick with yellow fever in 1793.

I purchased this for my son's summer reading list, however, I chose to read it first. What a great period fiction book. After reading Fever 1793, I found myself researching the epidemic to find out what really happened. Ms. Anderson clearly did her research as the piece was accurate with what I was reading in the research. My son also enjoyed the book and we spent some time discussing the book, which as any parent with a 12 year old boy knows, isn't an easy task.I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction.

Fever 1793 begins with good historical information for the reader who may not be aware of the situation in Philadelphia. In the middle of the book, the story becomes more melodramatic as it focuses on the main character as she tries desperately to find her mother and a place for her grandfather and her as the fever engulfs the city. The book quickly ends in somewhat dramatic form as she comes of age. For Middle School students, this is an easy and good read and provides some historical context. As a Middle School Humanities teacher (English and History) I was hoping for more detail as to how our nation got to Philadelphia as students at this grade level have very little historical context. In order to fill the information gap, we spent about a week to learn about the Revolutionary War, the founding of our government, who were the principle players (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Rush, and others) in order to create a foundation and prior knowledge. Overall, the book is entertaining and an easy read for Middle School Students but be prepared to answer many questions about the fever, reasons as to why it got to Philadelphia, and its impact on the human body.

Well written and historically accurate. The problem is mine. I did not realize it was written for adolescent women. I realized this before I started to read it but decided to read it anyway. I read all of the Hunger Games books and enjoyed them even though they were written for the same readership. This was a fast read that pulled no punches relative to the tragic period of the yellow fever. It was informative and encouraged me to look up the history of the period. The characters were real with some depth. I enjoyed it.

Awful product, purely theoretical with most of the analysis and explanation "left to the reader."I could not recommend this to anyone. The back cover contains many theorems and formulae used commonly.

Product arrived exactly as promised. As some have mentioned, this is the Indian edition of the text, but I didn't see any problems with missing pages or sections in a different order as others have noted. Very helpful option for people who need the book but lack the funds to purchase the US version.

One of the better Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problem texts available. A must for those interested in upper level mathematics.

Exactly the same as the American version content-wise. Mine had a few pages out of order but who cares

I really enjoy reading the book. I am not taking a class on Fourier Series. I am EE student, so knowing how to calculate a Fourier Series is very important, also it becomes very useful when you are expected to know Fourier along with Laplace Transformation.Easy to read, able to see follow along each line of equation.I own both Fourier Series, and Complex Variables by the same author.

reasonable price

arrived on time, book status is as described

Received on time. Great product! very satisfied with the services and I recommend to a friend!

I have to say, that from just reading the blurb, that I had my doubts, that this could possibly work out for Gloria and Jack, (and for Barney and Beatrice, for that matter!) Author Aurora Hanson will work it out, beautifully - after taking the reader on an exciting adventure! I fell for siblings Gloria and Barney, from the very first page. Brother and sister, who were forced to fend for themselves, on a failing, Wyoming, sheep ranch, without parents, after their parents were killed by The Crow. Barney feels terribly guilty that he was unable to save their parents, and is likely to misconstrue any man's intentions towards his sister. Yet, Barney longs to make a life and take a wife, but feels he can't make that move, until his sister's life is settled. An innocent trip into Rock Springs, and soon the siblings are up to their necks in a plot to kidnap the wealthy railroad heir, Jack Rollins. Danger, excitement, thrills, suspense, and in the midst of it all, romance. "A Sweet Abduction In The Wild West," by Aurora Hanson, is a thrilling read. I received this book as an ARC and I volunteered this review.

Wow! Talk about a complete flip. Aurora really nails this extremely riveting tale with the a smooth flowing storyline and incredibly strong plot draw you in deeper, holding your attention from start to finish. A rollercoaster ride of emotions and events that detail all the hardships, trials and tribulations that dog their every step. All the drama, heartache, uncertainty, fear, danger and suspense really bring this read roaring to life brilliantly. Twists and turns abound with unexpected circumstances that make for one thrilling experience. The characters are complex and believable with such depth and individuality it's easy to relate. You feel everything the characters feel, like you're part of the read instead of on the sidelines. The scenes are written with such realism it really pulls this little gem together beautifully. Incredible job Aurora, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

Pioneer parents murdered by the Crow, leaving brother and sister Big Barney and Clever Gloria on their own. Then bandits enlist their help by threatening innocent Beatrice whom Barney should be courting. Another innocent and railroad man new to town Jack Rollins is to be kidnapped and ransomed. Twists and surprises take this tale to another level of woe--but there is a completed story with HEA that is amazing and worth the read! Characters are well developed and lovable or complicated and hated.

This is a western story of intrigue and mayhem. It takes you on quite a wild journey through the wilds of Wyoming with a group of good and bad individuals who are all trying to outsmart the other group. It was interesting and danger driven, with 'good' winning in the end. It has a very different cast of characters who played their parts to the very end. The Epilogue was also an integral part of the whole finish of the story. Good job.

An interesting book filled with excitement, adventure and romance! Ms. Hanson has a talent for developing characters and plots that immediately grab and hold you until the very end of the book and this book is a classic example of that skill. I was given an ARC of the book and have voluntarily chosen to write this review. I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book and can heartily recommend it.

I was so hopeful to start with. Then the poor editing and proofreading bounded into the consciousness along with a storyline that dragged on. The Heroine was forever 'going to die', she was frequently shooting and killing or maiming others and actually should have been sent to jail or the gallows. The storyline went downhill with frequent religious references that just didn't hold up.

Couldn't put the book down until I reached the end. Spend a pleasant afternoon reliving the trials and tribulations of the characters . There is tons of suspense, twists and turns, romance, action and violence to transport the reader right into the time of the old wild west. Thank you for a lovely story.

This was a truly enjoyable read! I couldn’t put it down as soon as I got it. At first when I saw the preview, I was thinking Stockholm syndrome but the story proved me wrong. I loved the situations that went on and how each character reacted. I loved the adventure this story turned out to be.

Reviewed by: Michelle MillmanJohn G, Hendron’s book, “RSS for Educators” is a great tool and resource for teachers in any grade level (K-12) to utilize in order to bring Web 2.0 tools effectively into the classroom. The book discusses different Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, podcasts, and wikis on a very user friendly and informative level. This allows for the educator to learn about these tools and the way they can be utilized in the classroom and the effect it can have on student learning in the classroom.Hendron discusses his own experiences in Gochland County, Virginia and their policy that requires all teachers to maintain a blog. His arguments presented both for and against this idea are interesting and have great implications in the educational field. At the very least, the topic of requiring teachers to keep a blog (once developed as a way for people to personally connect and share their own thoughts, ideas, and opinions) opens up discussions of the way technology has integrated itself in classrooms and school districts. The book has a lot of great up to date information that allows educators to connect to students. For example, using iTunes to subscribe to podcasts or utilizing Audacity. Hendron gives the reader a wealth of information and sites to visit in order to effectively use Web 2.0 tools and often accompanies this information with screen shots of the site so the reader can become familiar with the site and its features. His step by step directions of sites prove to be incredibly useful and gives the reader great resources. With the information that is on the Web, Hendron offers the reader ways to minimize search time of information and maximize the information available. Tagging or using sites such as del.icio.us are effective ways to find information that Hendron mentions. With a lot of great, up to date information, the older 2006 publication date sometimes does show. In Hendron’s mention of Myspace and his lack of more popular social media outlets such as Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, the date of publication is more evident. However, Hendron shares a lot of great lesson ideas complete with grade levels, content area, standards, objectives, resources, procedures, and assessments. For an educator who is just beginning their technological journey or those who are looking to mix in different aspects of technology, these lessons are great resources.Overall, this book was a nice read. It was written with the educator in mind and how to develop some of the more popular Web 2.0 tools. This is worth a read to any educator looking to either learn a little bit more about these tools or those who want to offer their students technology experiences in the classroom as part of the curriculum.

Whatever happened to Web 1.0? Readers of John Hendron's (2008) book, RSS for Educators, will quickly realize the speed at which web technology has evolved. From its humble Web 1.0 beginnings of one-way, read-only applications on the information highway, we now have two-way, read-write RSS (Really Simple Syndication) apps and tools in a new revolutionary freeway of innovations of computer commuters networked by information using blogs, podcasts, newsfeeds, and wikis. This can be about everything, be from anywhere, happen everywhere, and on all kinds of devices (Wesch, 2008) For someone who has an older one-way computer background, John Hendron's book is an eye-opener not only for techies, but also especially for educators who must merge into the new-era of Web 2.0 information travels. The new features of this highway are succinctly defined with helpful diagrams picturing Client/Server/Local User paradigms to help us understand where we are located in this interactive information highway called the Internet. For someone who had little background on Web 2.0, this book was very readable with new technologies clearly explained. Much of the author's discussion of blogs, wikis, etc. seamlessly interact with his classroom experience as a teacher and liaison to district administrators and parents, in bringing them together to experience and benefit from the slew of technologies available to help them communicate and better education. The strength of the book is in its balance of presenting Web 2.0 technologies in a readable but also very technical fashion. Teachers can quickly make progress by using the recommended websites to start blog accounts, wikis, etc. A brief range of the most popular and powerful technologies are presented for the consumer to choose from depending on his/her situation. Whether it is blogs, wikis, podcasts, VoIP, or newsfeeds, the author usually surveys the most effective tools, always giving attention to both platforms, whether it is PC or Macintosh. His only weakness is his unhidden bias for Macs. However, the detail of his interaction with the technology is fair. His treatment of these is up-to-date and current. In relation to Wikis, John gives helpful examples of using wikis for department meetings, notes, minutes, and even curriculum development. Here is where the "Ah Haa" moments echo where he provides specific uses of wikis from his own educational experience. The technology of Web 2.0 is not confined to the classroom, but transcended by things like videoconferencing, and also usable in teacher business as well as district business. The two-way roads of technology are expanding to the many facets of education. When it comes to blogging, the author adequately surveys the popular blog resources available to begin web 2.0 applications. Again, both PC and Macintosh platforms are represented. The section does seem overly technical for educators, but as an educator with computer background, I found it very helpful. What I appreciate about Hendron's treatment is the balance of adequate technical help with the creativity of the Web 2.0 applications. Especially eye-opening were the classroom lesson plans using blogging technology to accomplish educational objectives. What administrator would not drop his/her jaw to see this kind of technology used in the classroom to engage and bring much needed collaboration to the classroom using technology? The lessons were replete with collaborative ideas using engaging technology. The only criticism is that the lesson plans did not include a single math lesson. This reviewer is a secondary math teacher. In the final analysis, the esoteric technical title of the book is actually a rich and readable ride into the revolutionary Web 2.0 technology of not the future, but the present. It's explained clearly across both platforms and surveyed across the most popular tools. This is an excellent primer on information travel for Web 2.0.

Review

“The book gives an unvarnished account of life in an elite Israeli counterterrorism unit—a side of life with which few Israelis and almost no foreigners are familiar.” (Washington Jewish Week)“He brings us into the shadowy world of Sayeret Duvdevan, offering details of his missions and his training, throwing in some contemporary and historical context, introducing us to his comrades-in-arms and delivering numerous gory anecdotes.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Aaron Cohen has something to say. And he knows what he’s talking about. If you’re conflicted about how aggressive America should be in the global fight against terrorism, read this book. Cohen knows that national survival ain’t free. This novel turned out to be a very very good read. It tells the true story of a young American who becomes a member of Sayeret Duvdevan after movingto Israel from the United States. His mother remarries a Hollywood executive. Their new home is in Beverly Hills,California. Aaron turns into adiscipline problem. His mother sends him to a military school in Canada. The name of this academy is Robert Land Academy. At this academy he comes under the influence of Colonel Bowman. Colonel Bowman teaches him the superior training and abilities of the Israeli Defense Forces(IDF). Aaron makesthe decision to move to Israel and become a citizen. He promptly joins the Israeli Defense Forces(IDF). After gaining combat experience and living on a kibbutz he decides to try out for the Israeli Special Forces. He is selected as a member of Sayeret Duvdevan. This is the Israeli equivelent of theNavy Seals and Green Berets. This turns out to be an experience. They conduct battles with Hamas and do operations against money raisers and financierswho fund the operations of terrorist organizations. They are able to capture a prominent Hamas member named Abu Jihad. Aaron finally reaches the pointwhere he can retire. Aaron moves back to California and opens his own security firm named IMS. This is a very good book. You should read this.

I was very pleasantly surprised. The book is divided (in my mind) into 4 sections. The first is how he wound up in the Israeli Army. I thought his story rang true. The second part was his training for the Elite Unit and how he made sure he got there. Again -- i thought told brilliantly without arrogance and with much introspection. The fourth part was his actual service. The fourth part is post army. He explains in vivid detail the rigors of the training and the challenges a soldier faces -- both physically and psychologically. This wasnt Green Beret stuff....he talks about the dangers the soldiers face and the loneliness of being in such a unit. Really great.

When I came to the question of how many stars, I hit the 5 stars withouth even thinking about it! I didn't have too. I read the entire 274 page book in 2 days! Written in a way to be easily read and understood, I couldn't put it down. The glimphs into the authors childhood, military school in Canada, and the incredible training he endured, that in my experience of 30 years of reading of military history to include the SAS, SEAL's, Green Beret, and others, the Israeli special forces I believe go thru worse, and endure more than any other! (For one reason, some their treatment in special forces training would be illegal)! They have to, due to being on a war footing at all times. Then, to the missions in "enemy territory," to snatch suspected terrorists, makes for incredible suspense! I would highly recommend this book to anyone, as a must read!

At times it seems the author reveals too much about operations of Israeli special forces and CT units, but in the end, not really. Quickly, it can be seen why the Israelis are the best fighting force in the world. The most interesting part of the book is at the very end when the author talks about his current career. It's amazing to see that even after 9/11, we are still reactive, instead of proactive, when it comes to security. What is really frightening, especially to anyone connected with our school systems no matter what the grade or year, is the total lack of preparedness and training which exists to deal with "school shooters." The fanatical opposition, mostly by teacher unions and administrators, to the presence of properly trained, and armed, security personnel in schools and the reliance on improperly trained, and remote, public safety forces should give pause to anyone who attends a school in this country or who sends a family member off to school.

This is a superior book written by a semi silver spoon Beverly Hills kid who dreams of making a difference and honoring his Jewish roots by going to Israel to participate in the elite special forces in what stands today as any country's most advanced and successful anti-terrorism elite special forces with methods and practices that if applied to the United States special forces would enhance our security abroad and right here at home.A compelling story of a young kid who has little idea of what he is about to get himself into, but ending up with a life that most would consider both very fulfilling and so very honorable by all defense and military buffs! A book that is hard to stop listening to and each time you do break, you look forward to the next time you will get to listen to more.I recommend this book highly for all readers who have an interest, however, be advised that as with most military books, at times there is harsh language so definitely PG-13+ rating. Not overly violent but very candid about the difficulties in the geopolitics and the physical and mental strain one undergoes when training for special forces, much like our Seal teams or England's MI6. A book I am happy to have in my library and to have experienced! Get this book!

Review

"This a riveting account of a tenacious investor, incompetent/apathetic regulators & analysts and a company that hid information, deceived investors and used every connection it had in its attempts to silence him. At points this reads like a John Grisham novel … except it actually happened. For me, this is the best of the ‘melt down’ books to date … hands down." — Todd Sullivan, valueplays.net, April 2010 " ... Ackman’s pursuit of MBIA spanned the two major crises of capitalism of the last decade, from the earlier era of corporate fraud prosecutions epitomized by Enron and its off-balance-sheet special purpose vehicles (SPVs), to the late credit debacle stemming from the collapse of the CDO house of cards." —The Hedge Fund Law Report, May 2010

From the Inside Flap

The Warning and the Winnings Confidence Game is a real-world "Emperor's New Clothes," a tale of widespread delusion and one dissenting voice in the era leading up to the worst financial disaster since the Great Depression. Wall Street appeared to have found the secret for turning everything from risky mortgages to credit card bills into super-safe, triple-A-rated securities. Behind the facade of safety, the financial system had become dangerously fragile. Few had anything to gain from pointing out the risk. Bill Ackman did. In 2002, the hedge fund manager issued a critical research report on MBIA Inc., the owner of a triple-A-rated bond insurer that played a central role in the financial alchemy on Wall Street. "This company will spiral downward," Ackman warned, and he placed a bet against MBIA that would earn his investors billions of dollars if it did. The backlash was swift. Ackman was branded a fraud in the press and investigated by Eliot Spitzer and the SEC. Despite the scrutiny, he spent years telling anyone who would listen why MBIA was a catastrophe waiting to happen. With the onset of the credit crisis, the problems exposed turned out to be bigger than MBIA. An unquestioning acceptance of credit ratings, a blind eye to leverage, a dangerous reliance on financial models, and the abandonment of common sense had become part of a deeply flawed financial system. The collapse humbled nearly every large financial institution and plunged the country into recession. Ackman's story captures an era of delusional confidence, when debt exploded yet risk appeared to vanish. Told by award-winning bond market reporter Christine Richard, Confidence Game is a behind-the-scenes look at how warnings went unheeded as Wall Street careened toward disaster.

I bought this book along with David Einhorn's ( Fooling Some of the People All of the Time, A Long Short (and Now Complete) Story, Updated with New Epilogue ) which is very similar in the storyline and end result.I thought this book was presented much better and I found myself more immersed in it than with Einhorn's. I was fighting to get through Einhorn's book, while I found myself wanting to read more of this one.All that being said, what Ackman did was tremendous - truly a David vs. Goliath task. However, as much respect as I have for Ackman and what he did and accomplished - as I read the book, I found myself questioning "Did Ackman simply uncover what was going on and made money being right"? or "Did Ackman actually cause the series of events to take place which caused the collapse of MBIA and other insurers after years of pitching his story"? It's sort of the same kind of thing that Dick Fuld brings up when discussing Lehman and Hank Greenberg discussing AIG...would the events which took place and the ultimate demise have happened on their own had short sellers and some of the nefarious actors not done what they did? Or would business have just continued as it always had? Though each of the companies did have problems, I'm not so sure that they would not have been able to muddle through...I believe it was with the added pressure applied by folks like Ackman and Einhorn that undermined public confidence in these companies that ultimately threw them into turmoil. Of course the financial crisis threw gasoline into the fire, but again, had public confidence not been undermined, perhaps they would have been able to raise additional money, righted their ships, and continued? The fact that MBIA is still in business today makes you really ask these questions. How could MBIA still be in business if what they were offering provided no benefit to the purchasers of municipal bond insurance and was simply added cost to taxpayers? Is there business really so different today?Today, MBIA does $1B in revenues while carrying $9B in debt - however, they are posting decent/strong earnings - $1.81/share over trailing 12 months with a stock price at $6.00. Ackman called for MBIA to go to bankruptcy, and it still has not happened...even after everything which has taken place.

This book came out in late April, and the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Financial Times have all ignored it.The lack of attention is a shame, because it's an amazing, amazing book.Hedge fund manager William Ackman gave author Christine Richard impressive access. She writes, "Ackman gave me a CD-ROM containing every e-mail he had written or received that mentioned MBIA as well as years of appointment calendars and access to an office filled with more than 40 boxes of documents he'd collected in researching MBIA. He encouraged colleagues, advisers, and friends to talk with me and spent hours answering my questions."The result is a fast-paced, behind-the-scenes look at how a "short" investor uses the press, stock analysts, and the government to beat down the price of a stock he has bet against.Mr. Ackman's campaign that is at the heart of this book is his war against Municipal Bond Insurance Association, or MBIA.Here the key journalist seems not to have been anyone at the New York Times, or even Ms. Richard, who worked for Dow Jones and Bloomberg. No, it was "Marty Peretz, the editor-in-chief of the New Republic magazine, who had been Ackman's thesis adviser when he was an undergraduate at Harvard."Mr. Peretz, reports Ms. Richard became the first investor in Mr. Ackman's hedge fund after Mr. Ackman "drove from Boston to Peretz's summer house on Cape Cod to pitch him the idea." (Mr. Peretz tells me the investment was $500,000, made at the time and not subsequently increased.)By Ms. Richard's account, Mr. Peretz wasn't exactly what you'd call a passive investor. After the SEC didn't really follow up on a meeting in which Mr. Ackman aired his allegations about MBIA to SEC staff, Mr. Peretz wrote in July 2004 to the chairman of the SEC, William Donaldson, "with whom he was friendly." Reports Ms. Richard, "Peretz's appeal stirred a response at the SEC, which asked Ackman to return to Washington."If the SEC did not act against MBIA, Mr. Ackman would try another regulator, the attorney general of New York, Eliot Spitzer. Ms. Richard reports that in January or February 2005: "Ackman, along with Marty Peretz, and Eliot Spitzer were huddled around a small table in the attorney general's office, eating pressed turkey sandwiches. Peretz had arranged the lunch meeting. Ackman wanted to point Spitzer toward the important issues at MBIA."If Mr. Spitzer and the SEC both did not act, there was always the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Barney Frank. The book recounts Mr. Ackman and his lawyer flying to Boston on June 5, 2007 for a meeting with Congressman Frank, with whom they visited only after they "picked up Marty Peretz, who knew Frank from their student days at Harvard." Mr. Frank agreed to hold hearings on MBIA.There's plenty of other rich detail here. The broker who gave Mr. Ackman the idea to short MBIA worked for, of all places, Lehman Brothers. The dependent relationships among short-sellers, regulators, and the press are illuminated for all to see. At one point, Mr. Ackman asks an SEC official what it would take to get the agency to act. The SEC official's reply? "A story on the front page of the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times, especially the New York Times."What to make of the whole episode? Well, it's certainly a newsworthy tale, and not only for those interested in hedge funds or short-selling. One MBIA vehicle named something like Latin for "black hole," Ms. Richard reports, "owned liens on 11,000 properties in Pittsburgh, nearly 10 percent of the entire city."As an investment idea, shorting MBIA was a big success. The shares lost more than 80% of their value. "Pershing Square investors made about $1.1 billion," Ms. Richard reports. About $140 million of that was Mr. Ackman's personally, though, Ms. Richard reports, he has pledged the entire amount to charity. Those troubled by Mr. Ackman's use of the regulators to press his position at least have to concede that MBIA and its allies also used the regulators to press their own case against Mr. Ackman, subjecting him to SEC and New York attorney general inquiries that were eventually dropped. While Ms. Richard's book is finished, the story isn't over. Some value investors are now placing bets on an MBIA recovery. And short-sellers are circling the for-profit education industry using the same strategy of press and regulatory pressure that was deployed so successfully against both Farmer Mac and MBIA.
