Yes, this is $6 for 27 pages. That seems insane because you can get the whole Puerto Rico Moon Guidebook for $13.50 and it has 276 pages. Yes, that's right, 10x pages for only 2x the money. But that is is stupid math. How much of the big guidebooks do people actually use? Most of the content is for places you'll never see, so its just several hundred pages of dead weight in your bag and its annoying to open up the giant tome to find what you need. Its the utility of the book that matters, not the number of pages. When I'm traveling and spending more than a few days in a given location, whatever guidebook I have is always worth its weight in gold. A few bucks is nothing to quibble over - good information makes all the difference. And when I spent 5 days in Vieques recently, this book was all I needed. In terms of the content, never buy a guidebook that is more than a few years old. This one was borderline - published in mid-2008, which means it was written probably 3 years ago. A lot can change in 3 years. Ferry routes get cancelled, restaurants close, hotels jack up prices - all of which were problems in this guide. I was also pretty disappointed in the depth of coverage. They could have easily added a dozen more pages and provided some incremental info without going overboard.Net/net: I like the small size and geographic focus. But they have to do a better job of keeping that info undated and providing more nerdy/interesting details.

I found no inside information in this travel guide that you can't find in one of the major guides like Fodor's or Frommer's. Plus with the major travel guides you get info about the rest of Puerto Rico too.

Structures: Or why things don’t fall down A very interesting book, covering a wide field of topics, from the ground up you might say.Basic concepts of forces are addressed. Compression, tension, shear and torsion forces, and their occurrence in everything from bridges, ancient coliseums, trees, boats and human biology. This, the author does very well; constantly interweaving the effects of various types of strains and stresses and fractures as they occur in wood construction and metal beams, as well as human skeletons and arteries.Reasons for, and types of failure are described for wood, concrete, boat sails, steel, femurs and aortas. Advantageous shapes of design for handling wind and accepting impacts are given, and reasons for spoke wheels. Critical and safe limits of fatigue and fracture are described…historical cases are offered, describing why early aero planes crashed and bridges fell down, and why boats capsize.Cautions are pointed out. Over design of repair: The repair must work in harmony with the repaired material, and not be so unyielding that it works against it. So many invisible forces of tension and compression are at play, and violation of acceptable limits must be watched for when they manifest in fractures.Different approaches to bridge trusses are explained, not so much mathematically, but in concepts of load bearing and the transference of force throughout the truss. By way of example, Bowstring bridges seem quite clever in design, where the internal force of the arch pulls the roadway below it taught so that the whole thing is held in equilibrium like a bow and arrow on a giant scale. The all important “thrust line” is a constant theme from chapter to chapter. Now I know why those old cathedrals have so many spires and spooky statues way up there, and it’s not for warding off evil spirits, it’s because they’re heavy. There are photographs, all clumped together in the middle of the book. Black and white, kind of blurry, but still a helpful aid. Very nice drawings, not blurry, and graphs are abundant in all chapters to help visualize the topics being discussed. These and many more topics and application fill this book, none of it came across as boring or dry.Beyond the final chapter, a few concepts are given a light mathematical treatment. Moments in I-beams, deflections in cantilevers and so forth. The pages are made of sturdy heavy paper, the printing is nice size and clear for those who require reading glasses, with ample space around the print for making marginal notes.

I wish Gordon was my Strength of Material Professor. His grasp of the subject is only exceeded by his writing skills.Reminds me of Richard Feynman in his knowledge and his ability to teach a complex topic..BTW this is on the recommended book list of Elon Musk. That's a nice endorsement.

What this book does very well is demonstrate the scientific process from a practical and engineering perspective. The book is written sort of like a narrative, and the historical descriptions take on a nearly first-person feel to it. It's almost like 'you' can experience the evolution of thought and understanding of structural mechanics. It's as close to a representation of how science is actually done as I've seen. Very unique.FYI though, the guy tends to get a bit verbose and it sometimes feels like words were added to make his stream of consciousness writing make sense to others, but not enough words were taken away later.

I thought this would be a bit dry, but it's geared toward the layperson, and it's informative and entertaining.

Written by an Englishman with dry wit, this is a textbook that lay persons such as I can read smoothly and enjoyably. There are 24 photo plates in the middle, and stick drawings on almost every page. Mathematical formulas abound, but if you don't like math, you can skip the formulas and continue reading with pleasure.

This classic book was a good read, especially the dramatic stories told with humor of old technology in ships and bridges when they failed. I read it due to Elon Musk's recommendation in his list of "must read" books. I learned here the basics of structural engineering, at least qualitatively. However, I didn't like the poor job done turning this into an ebook. Many of the scanned illustrations were of poor quality and the text had many mistakes caused by poor optical character recognition (OCR) and poor proofreading. Luckily the author's intent was usually clear, even though the OCR errors were plentiful.

There are two kinds of books engineers need to read--the dry, math-bound classroom textbooks that allow them to believe they can precisely analyze their creations to two decimal places, and the practical, generalist books like this one that explain why all that math does nothing to prevent their creations from breaking into multiple pieces. Tension and compression, stress and strain, and the dreaded torsion are the subjects of this book, but its real accomplishment is explaining the reality of structures--where the mathematically ideal tension of a rope meets the concomitant but difficult-to-quantify need for attachments at both ends. The author does this with a fine English wit and easy-to-follow prose. One of my chief recreational interests is the design and construction of experimental aircraft, and pretty much every topic discussed in this book is pertinent to that activity. In particular, the sections on work of fracture and crack propagation are explained better here than in any design book I've ever read. A must-read in my opinion for anyone involved in structural or mechanical designs.

I read about 20 books/year, This book is literally one of the best books i have ever read in my life. Math is very minimum some complicated stuff but very rare and a must read for every Mechanical/Civil engineer.

The first half of this book gets 5 stars without qualification. It is a clear explanation of the archetypes that appear in the most fundamental stories, how they work together, and the ultimate purpose for telling stories. He then uses this archetypal system to analyze stories through the ages, down to very recent years. I found his analysis of Shakespeare, for instance, very helpful. This is what I bought the book for, and I am not at all disappointed. In some ways this book is not as immediately useful as, say, 'Save the Cat' and others like it are useful for screenwriting. However, I think this book delivers the groundwork for stories--the groundwork beyond which we cannot go. Its information is more fundamental than the 'Save the Cat' types. If I were a literature professor, this might well be the book I started with.As he moves into how stories have gone rogue, trying to escape from the archetypal patterns, the book begins to become repetitive, and the tone begins to change from that of confident lecturer to exasperated preacher. But these chapters are still valuable. Then he applies the archetypes to history, and things become not only repetitive, especially if you already know something about history in general and the history of religion in particular, but also without clear focus. I'm not sure he is always correct with either his facts or his analysis, although generally I consider him authoritative. It also seems to me that he is projecting the archetypes onto history, which is one of the things he warns against.Still, I find his thesis very useful, which in short is that as we lose touch with our religious ties to God, and therewith our ties to the Self (Jung), we become isolated and egotistical, on both the individual level as well as the national level. And, furthermore, that story structure can tell us how we are deficient if only we have the humility to look for it, again, both as groups, even nations, and as individuals. Ultimately these could be the most profound and important chapters of the book, but a good editor would have been useful to sort them out. For me, they were a bonus: not what I bought the book for, but a welcome introduction to the possibility of using stories to heal ourselves.

This book is actually many things:- An introduction to the seven basic plots and their many associated archetypes that work in combination.- A system. It can be applied to any story you know (and it’s fun to do so).- A tool. An almost obligatory read for anyone who invents stories. If you don’t tap on this 37 years research you’re simple on disadvantage. It’s not that everyone should follow the author's guidance in order to write stories that fulfill the self and not the ego, on the contrary, a writer might find herself not wanting to do so, but the structure the book provides is a map to decide when and how to move away or within the Self archetypical path.- A partial and moral history of literature, and an even more partial and equally moral history of Western culture.- A psychoanalis of our modern western culture, throughout the stories we invent and the ones we tell ourselves. And it's, indeed, a moralistic analysis, something that can pull the nerves of a grownup reader.- A compendium of great and diverse stories.- A source of unexpected spoilers (if you read the book be very careful with this, for it reveals the plot of so many stories and books, that chances are it will spoil something you want to read. I had to overlook several paragraphs when reading). The Odyssey versus Ulysses, E.T. versus Encounters of the Third Type, Terminator versus Frankenstein… in each comparison the author prefers the first and rejects the second option. Interestingly, this framework (or as I called it: system) allows strange and yet consistent and justifiable comparisons, such as Jaws versus Gilgamesh (borrowing a famous gedankenexperiment from Chomsky, if someone told these two stories to a martian, it will think they are just two slightly different versions of the same). It’s refreshing to see how the author jumps without loss of continuity from Hollywood B movies to universal classics. And this tool's lack of respect for the boundaries between high and low cultures (the below-the-line and the above-the-line archetype), which is itself a moral construct, compensates, in my opinion, its otherwise unbearable moralism regarding other aspects (ego versus self). In summary: vaccinate yourself against moralism, enjoy this awesome construction and the many stories it contains, be aware of spoilers, and use what you learned to write great new stories.

THE SEVEN BASIC PLOTS by Christopher Booker is a provocative book. The basic idea is that any story can be boiled down to one of seven plots:Overcoming the MonsterRags to RichesThe QuestVoyage and ReturnComedyTragedyRebirthWhat is excellent about this book is the amount of learning involved and the interesting connections made between authors as disparate as Jane Austen and Luigi Pirandello. However, this is a big book at over 700 pages, and I think that part of it could have been condensed.Like other readers, I believe that the strength of the book lies in Part One of the book, titled THE SEVEN GATEWAYS TO THE UNDERWORLD. The following three parts are less strong, mainly because of Booker's contention that any narrative, such as Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN, which doesn't conform to what Booker takes to be archytypal norms, is fatally flawed. That this can't possibly be true is borne out by the fact that is ranked at number 59 on Amazon's list of Bargain Books. Readers continue to love this book some 200 years after it was published. So it obviously isn't "fatally flawed" for them.If you are interested in reading a provocative interesting account of stories, and how they might relate to our psychology, this book is for you. For my part, I think that a strong editorial hand was needed on Parts Two, Three and Four, which were too often filled with silly Freudian cliches. Three stars.

An amazing history about the boys who fought side-by-side during the US/Mexico war only to fight against each other a few years later during the American Civil war! Lots of rich information from Martin Dugard, the king of historical research! Fun reading and you'll learn something.

Excellent portrayal of the early careers of these prominent Civil War officers. Reads like a story...plenty of description of the hardships they experienced as young officers in the field, prior to the moment that they assumed their commands a generation later. A must read for anyone interested in American Civil War history.

Great insight into the events shaping the military experiences of the most influential players in the Civil War.

I liked the book...good history of young US Grant

I bought the audio cds for The Training Ground and I have enjoyed it very much.I enjoy Civil War history and I was fascinated with how The Training Ground brought the later movers and shakers of the Civil War to life by showing how they developed during the Mexican American War. The Training Ground is not an overall account of the Mexican American War; it is instead a series of biographies tied together to show how the war progressed from the perspecitves of key individuals. The history is told in a way that really captures the listener and the narration is very well done.I enjoyed the Training Ground so much that I sent the set of Audio Cds to my father to listen to so he could enjoy it. He later said that it was the most interesting set of historical CDs he had listened to and he exclusiverly listens to historical CDs when driving.I highly recomend The Training Ground in the Audio CD format.

While a most enjoyable read, I must agree with other reviewers that this book fails, but for yet more reasons. It fails because it is not true to its own stated purpose. Early in the book, Mr. Dugard states that he is fascinated with the potential young people have and how that potential manifests through the course of their lives. He also says that the book is not meant to be a history of the Mexican War, but rather an analysis of the young graduates of West Point who went on to prosecute that war and later face each other on opposite sides in the War Between the States. The book accomplishes neither of these goals.Mr. Dugard starts by telling of the early lives of the great figures of mid-19th century America who graduated from West Point, particularly Lee, Grant, Meade and Davis. Notice I did not say Sherman, a big name given short shrift despite the subtitle. Much of the material seems to come from the memoirs of these men, and the long quotes are the book's highlights. The book then moves to the conflict over Texas, Polk's agenda and the outbreak of the Mexican War. As usual, there are subtle politically correct condemnations of the motivations and prejudices associated with these events that ring from the words chosen; this demonstrates a lack of historical perspective. Nineteenth century Americans were motivated by completely different assumptions and world views from ours today; current moral yardsticks are useless. The author also injects needless schmaltz such as descriptions of gentle breezes blowing across this and that or emotions felt by anonymous soldiers. Popular histories are often filled with these unsubstantiated musings and they never add to the narrative. Then the book turns into just what Mr. Dugard said it was not - a history of the Mexican War. No it is a history of the Mexican War alright, blow by blow and chronological, detailing logistics, losses in men and horses, troop movements and geography. And except for the fact checking it does a darn good job of telling of that war, but that was not the books stated purpose. But the biggest problem is in the failure of theme, the lack of analysis of the potential these men had and how the Mexican War affected their conduct of the War Between the States and their future. But for a short epilog, the book ends abruptly with the end of the Mexican War. Yet many opportunities for analysis present themselves. For example, it seems reasonable that Grant's brilliant tactical move down the Mississippi to affect a surprise attack on Vicksburg's rear was influenced by his observation of Scott's round-end tactics used twice in the battle for Mexico City. After the discussion of Lincoln's pacifism while in the House of Representatives in 1847, there follows no analysis of the irony of that pacifism 14 years later when Lincoln provoked the attack on Fort Sumter. Mr. Dugard explores none of the questions he raises. There is no discussion of "potential" and the result of that potential anywhere in the book.I must agree with other reviewers that the lack of rigor in getting facts both large and small right seriously comprises the book. A history book like a scientific paper hangs on all its facts or none. Mr. Dugard is a professional writer, not an academic. He is evidently not accustomed to rigor. Perhaps he should stick to writing of sports where he is not a journeyman. That said, he is a good writer, not poetic, not imaginative, not challenging but a good, solid pleasant writer. So but for the irritations (Lincoln elected in 1859? Young master Dugard must have skipped civics class that day) this is an enjoyable read.Lastly, I must respond to Mr. Brewer's review and defend Mr. Dugard on one point. The U.S. won every major engagement of the Mexican War and most of the skirmishes. The U.S. got all of its territorial demands in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. That may not be victory by 20th century standards (total subjugation of a population), but it certainly was by mid 19th century standards.

Excellent read.

Good on highlights of the Mexican War. Some errors but overall shows some of the reasons Americans were better prepared for this warthan any other in history.

Has enough detail for most general dentists when you need a reference, and more than enough for the dental student. There is also some discussion of advanced technique in the text that is shown with a colored background, however there does not seem to be much discussion on advanced cases (4 stars). Chapters discuss all aspects of most partial denture cases including some maxillofacial prosthetics. I like to learn a lot by looking at pictures. One huge plus this book has is more than 90% full color (5 stars) pictures (more than 900). However I wish the pictures showed how to do procedures in a step by step format. The pictures for the most part just show what things are supposed to look like in the end of a procedure (3 stars). Avg stars: 4

Great for students, general practitioners and removable prosthodontics specialists.

Very good book

Is it the last version of this book? It's quite saddness. I have the old version. It is much more brilliant of the latest version.

Great book I highly recommend it for anyone that wants to learn removable prosthodontics. This book has great illustrations and sequences treatment.

The book is a good supplement to my RPD class and is very easy to understand and explains things quite well.

A valuable book

This is quite honestly more than just a book, it is in certain respects an encyclopedic reference tool for any dental health care practitioner. The photographs and illustrations are exceptional, and the descriptive information is brilliant. Anyone interested in the field of dental prosthetics will find this to be a most interesting source of information, and for those involved professionally within the field of Prosthodontics, this is no doubt an invaluable professional resource.

The Black and the Blue: A Cop Reveals the Crimes, Racism, and Injustice in America's Law Enforcement, by Matthew Horace

Review

"A black cop's frank look at tensions between police, communities of color.... The Black and the Blue is an affirmation of the critical need for criminal justice reform, all the more urgent because it comes from an insider who respects his profession yet is willing to reveal its flaws." ―USA Today"The Black and the Blue is an important contribution to a growing body of work about minority police officers. Horace's authority as an experienced officer, as well as his obvious integrity and courage, provides the book with a gravitas."―The Washington Post"Who polices the police? Matthew Horace asks this in The Black and the Blue....[P]lenty of [stories] are about times when black lives didn't seem to matter, others are about blue lives, too, as police officers-white and black, men and women, good and bad-talk honestly about life on the street."―New York Daily News"Horace's experiences, from his childhood in Philadelphia to his work on the streets and in police training classrooms, will be revelatory to many readers who have not felt the sting of racial prejudice.... [S]olid reporting and trenchant analysis [gives] Horace's readers a poignant understanding of how it feels to be both a black man and a black policeman. Reading The Black and the Blue will help all of us better understand the formidable challenges that big-city police officers confront every day-and how those challenges are exponentially more difficult when the police officer is a black man."―Philadelphia Inquirer"The hidden dysfunctions in American policing are laid bare in this searching exposé.... Horace and coauthor Harris write sympathetically of the dilemmas of policing, but are uncompromising in their indictment of abuses. Horace's street cred and hard-won insights make this one of the best treatments yet of police misconduct."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"The heated debates surrounding the relationship between police and African Americans have tended to overlook one crucial part of the story: people who belong to both communities. Matthew Horace is a keen observer of the racial dynamics of policing, the often shameful history that contextualizes it and the implications for our current circumstances. A great deal has been said on this subject but very little of it [is as] perceptive and profound as The Black and the Blue."―Jelani Cobb, The New Yorker"Matthew Horace is shedding light on racial stereotypes and how they play out in police departments across America."―Salon.com"An impassioned memoir... Horace vividly depicts the surreal challenges faced by African Americans in law enforcement.... An astute, unvarnished account that should stand out from the crowd of pro- and anti-law enforcement books."―Kirkus Reviews"If anger and sorrow haven't flooded to the surface when the last page is turned, go back and start again."―Shelf Awareness starred review"Insightful, honest, and probing.... Drawing on years of experience as an officer-and even more years of experience as a black man-Matthew Horace has written a book that everyone should read."―Wesley Lowery, author of the New York Times bestseller They Can't Kill Us All

I think this needs to be read by everybody in the US. On that note, I hate that the people who need to read it the most, are among the people who are unwilling to even consider reading this book because they have decided they know everything there is to know on the subject.

The best book written to date on the subject of excessive use of force by police on minority groups. Matt Horace, well respected in the law enforcement community at the local, state and federal level, tells it like it is from a personal perspective. A compelling and must read!

Great Read. Well written and explains alot.

A Very informative and interesting read

SHOULD REVEAL MORE BUT STOPPED SHORT

"Even as a federal agent, I have been on surveillance or supporting an operation and have had an officer approach me and say that the neighbors called about a "suspicious" vehicle, which meant it was a black guy driving a car. I’ve been the man in that suspicious vehicle.”Matthew Horace worked as a cop at the federal, state, and local level for 28 years, and he is plenty sick of the “toxic brotherhood.” The quote above refers to an incident that occurred in Mill Creek, a (very white) suburb outside Seattle, Washington where I live, but it’s not just here; it’s everywhere in the US. Specifically, he tells us about cities where some of the most notorious cop violence has created resistance such as New Orleans, Chicago, Baltimore, and Ferguson. There are essays provided by police chiefs from some of these places as well as from Kathleen O’Toole, who was chief here in Seattle; O’Toole’s prose reek of electioneering, the sort of style that speaks for itself. Many of these contributors contradict Horace’s own assertion that the problem is endemic, and is absolutely not a case of a few bad apples. More than one of these essays hold the fascination I’d feel if forced to watch a rattlesnake before it strikes; the sanctimony, the grandiose claims of justice supposedly served. The most interesting of them all is from an African-American police chief in Chicago, whose personal stories of her family members having been abused—including her sons—stand diametrically opposed to what she does for a living, and yet she maintains her tightrope walk, determined to make a difference where only the smallest, if any, seems likely.By now I should have thanked Net Galley and Hachette Books for the review copy, which I received free and early. This excellent book is available to the public Tuesday, August 7, 2018.There has been a flurry of books published about this subject since it became national news. More than anything, the internet and cellular phones have stripped the gatekeeping capacity of the major news outlets; cops that were able to beat and even kill people and lie about it later are being outed left and right. Even I, who am an old lefty and have never really believed cops were there to protect ordinary people, am shocked by much of what’s been revealed. I wondered, as I began reading, whether Horace could add to what’s already been said and shown. What could he add to the body of information provided by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Angela Davis, and Matt Taibbi? (Many years ago, Norm Stamper, former Seattle police chief, also wrote an expose that included a chapter on why cops beat Black men.)As it happens, Horace has a lot of information that I hadn’t read, and it isn’t just a matter of fine detail. For example, who knew that in New Orleans, cops were not merely accepting graft, but actively robbing Black-owned businesses, guns drawn, and making off with their cash and other valuables? It’s the sort of thing that lives in your head for a long time after you read it; but then again, it should be.The sourcing is impeccable. Those with an interest in Black Lives Matter, in civil rights in general, or with an interest in race issues within the so-called criminal justice system in America should get this book, for full price if necessary, and read it. Read the whole thing. So much of our future depends on how we respond.

Thank you Net Gallery for an advanced copy of The Black and the Blue by Matthew Horace. This is a great book, it follows police brutality from the prospective of a black man. The part about shootings and harassment back in the day by white men to black men doesn't surprise me it's knowing it's still going on. In this book we learn more about police abuse particularly to black officers, the many shootings of young black men like Michael Brown etc. Black Lives Matter. I really didn't know there was that many shootings of black men until reading this book. It's a enormous outcry in my mind. All in all this book is very interesting and kept me reading. I hated what Mr. Horace went through and the other black officers. This story needed to be told and everyone should pass this book around. Thank you Mr. Horace for telling this much needed book, it's about time someone did.One line will stay with me for a long time: If you call 911 who know who will show up. Scary thought. Thanks againCherie'

The Black and the Blue is a timely, relevant, and nuanced discourse on police bias, brutality, and even bribery. This masterful work doesn’t stop at the precinct house. Horace and Harris cover the layered connections among local departments, federal agencies, and political machines. It is written in a perfect pitch that reaches beyond the cloistered neighborhoods that are most often the scene of law enforcement malfeasance. And, it shines light on the cognitive dissonance experienced by so many of us who view undeniable truths through dual lens because we are bonded by blood and friendship to men and women who write the law and enforce it.Neither police nor politicians are spared an honest critique of documented encounters. Described here are uniformed officers who are tools in revenue enhancement strategies. Also, up front are mayors and other elected officials who design these revenue-raising schemes that ensure that poor people are trapped in fee-paying debt. Nor do the writers spare prosecuting attorneys who focus on obtaining convictions, not justice. The telling is balanced, non-judgement, complicated. The book is refreshingly honest in connecting the links between poverty, broken school systems, and unemployment to violent crime. Inequity is further evident in the passage that describes the start of gentrification as the realization by long-time residents that they are “one abandoned house sale from losing the neighborhood.” Equal voice is given in first-person accounts that are dispersed throughout the book: A state trooper captain, a first female chief of police, a big city police department detective and former chief are examples of those who define how they are reshaping policies into best practices in 21st Century policing. Perfectly timed, Father Michael Pfleger, well-known Chicago priest and community activist has his say in the penultimate chapter. Academy instructors and law school professors should include this text in syllabi, make it required reading, and design tests based on proven effective approaches. The Black and the Blue demands space on bookshelves and nightstands of police commissioners, chiefs, and leadership of all first responders who carry firearms, and thereby weld uneven power.
