Amazon.com Review

Q&A with Yoni Freedhoff M.D. on The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours Work What misconception about dieting do you think causes the most damage? The most damaging misconception about dieting is that our weights should all be “ideal” and that scales not only measure pounds, but also possess the ability to measure the presence or absence of health. It’s those messages that lead dieters to undertake wholly nonsensical approaches to weight management, and they also serve to help fuel society’s hateful weight biases. What is Post Traumatic Dieting Disorder? Post-traumatic dieting disorder or PTDD is the frequent consequence of years of recurrent traumatic dieting efforts. It’s a shared constellation of symptoms that often extends far beyond a dieter’s relationship with food and may include feelings of ineffectiveness, shame, hopelessness, loss of healthy body image, feeling permanently damaged, social withdrawal, and, at times, can even impact upon interpersonal relationships. Another very common symptom of PTDD is the belief that traumatic diets are required for weight management success; oftentimes folks with PTDD spend huge portions of their lives yo-yo’ing from one traumatic diet to the next. This leads to a vicious cycle of suffering, binge dieting, and feelings of inadequacy that sets people up for failure. What is the most important factor in sustaining your weight? The most important factor in sustaining your weight is not just tolerating, but actually liking your life and being both consistent, and, believe it or not, imperfect. Truly, your job in regard to both weight and health is to live the healthiest life that you can enjoy - in other words, to do your best. That said, it’s important to note that the best you can do over say, Christmas or a vacation, is very different than the best you can do during a plain, old, boring week, but that also doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still be thinking about things. Given our modern day Willy Wonkian food environment, not paying attention, for many, leads to easy gains, and given it’s so much easier to gain than it is to lose, remaining thoughtful, but not blindly strict, and doing so consistently, is crucial. Putting this another way - the healthiest life you can enjoy still needs to include chocolate, but that amount of chocolate needs to be the smallest amount that you need in order to be happy, and that amount changes day by day. Why is the label of obesity misleading? Unfortunately the label “obesity” carries with it a huge amount of societal stigma, stereotype and frankly ugly judgment whereby people who are described as “being” obese are regularly perceived and portrayed as lazy and gluttonous. Yet the presence or absence of weight really doesn’t define anyone. There are healthy people with weight to lose, and unhealthy skinny ones, and I certainly know plenty of beanpole gluttons. While there’s no doubt that medical risk rises with weight, risks are certainly not guarantees, and more importantly, weight does not and cannot be used to judge a person’s lifestyle. So if you’re ever writing about obesity, remember that a person cannot “be” labeled as obese, they can only have obesity, and that given the negative stereotypes and implications surrounding the word obesity, that distinction matters. What is the biggest misconception you wish people could shake off about dieting? The biggest misconception that I wish people could shake off about dieting is that suffering and sacrifice are dieting’s true determinants of success. Unfortunately, as a species, we just aren’t built to suffer in perpetuity. Consequently, weight that’s lost through suffering, through some combination of under-eating and/or over-exercising, is bound to come back. What’s the best diet? There really is no one “best” diet - if there were, there wouldn’t be tens of thousands of different diet books available, and weight struggles would be rare to non-existent. Ultimately a person’s “best” diet is the healthiest diet that they can enjoy, as diets that are merely tolerable, given food’s star billing as one of life’s most seminal pleasures, simply don’t last. Real life does, and frankly must, still include chocolate.

#36,660 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I heard about this book on the My Favorite Murder podcast.I've only just started this book, but I've lost a couple of pounds already. It's getting easier, not harder as I go along. I kinda want to recommend it to everyone I know. You need a scale to weigh your food. But that's kinda fun. It's like chemistry class.

Were you ever at a doctor's appointment where they told you you were too heavy and needed to lose weight, then just got up and walked out? Can you imagine a doctor telling a patient they have cancer or heart disease, then just walking out of the exam room without giving them some sort of guidance or treatment? At 400 pounds, it happened to me many times, and from others I have talked to, it happens often. The Diet Fix has the information those doctors should be telling their patients. This book is some of the best money I have ever spent. I weighed 400 pounds for much of my adult life. After reading the book and starting to follow it, I lost nine pounds by the time I started Weight Watchers about a week later. It's been over a year and I am down over 130 pounds, and many, many clothes sizes (size 56 pants to presently size 40). By now, everyone knows that to lose weight you have to expend more calories than you take in. Easy in theory, but not so easy in practice! The Diet Fix tells you how to do it, then how to keep it off. It tells you how to do it in a realistic DOABLE fashion. It teaches you what people who were successful did, and how to do those things. It tells you how to lose weight in a healthy way. There is nothing Freedhoff recommends that your doctor would be concerned about. It makes healthy living a lifestyle you want to do so that it lasts a lifetime. It gives you realistic expectations of your weightloss so that you understand what is going on. It helps you to understand the changes you are making both physically and emotionally. Although I am also going to Weight Watchers, I credit this book mostly for my weight loss, as it has helped me to tweek their program. I never could have been as successful as I've been without this book. Most importantly, you are not going to starve while you are losing weight. You are not going to deprive yourself, but you will learn how to get control and stay in control. The amazing thing about weight loss is that what you have to push yourself to do at the start, like tracking everything (with smartphone apps, not difficult or time consuming), becomes things you want to do because you want the benefits it rewards you with. Presently, I'm at 259 lbs, continuing to lose a few more pounds, wearing sizes I wore in college, and enjoying life more than I have in a long time. Thanks Dr. Freedhoff!

I think the best part about this book is how it stresses that in order for any "diet" or new eating plan to be successful long-term, it has to be enjoyable, it has to be sustainable. Anyone can suffer for 6 months and lose a lot of weight, only to gain it all back when the program they chose just isn't sustainable anymore. Willpower runs out when suffering is involved, that's just a fact of life. The same goes for exercise. He said you must *enjoy* the exercise that you choose and be able to do it consistently over the years. That said, I'm not into the calorie-counting thing. For me, *that's* not sustainable and that's where this book loses a star. Maybe for a short while in order to get a clear-eyed picture of how many calories you're eating everyday, but a lifetime of calculating and recording calories??? I'd rather use the portion-control method of using your fists to determine how much you should be eating at a meal (one fist-sized portion of veggies and one half-and-half fist-sized portion of protein and carbs). The calorie-counting is a deal breaker for me in terms of following his methods to the letter. There are many good tidbits throughout the book, though, that make it worth reading and/or skimming through. For example, he believes that you're setting yourself up for failure if you allow yourself to get too hungry at any point during the day, so you should plan snacks into your day so that you don't become so ravenous that you end up inhaling your daily calories all in one sitting. He also advocates for eating before an event, again, so that you don't overindulge in rich party food. He believes that people should be cooking and eating most of their meals at home to avoid highly caloric and overly-seasoned (with fat and sugar) restaurant food.He also does a good job spelling out the variety of ways in which dieting can be traumatic to people. Trauma does not equal long-term results, quite the opposite. He's very much oriented towards "slow and steady wins the race." Nothing that he recommends is a quick fix. His plan for lifelong weight loss requires time, planning, and mindfulness (as it should). He's more interested in how people keep the weight off than in how they lose the weight, and for good reason. Keeping it off is oftentimes harder than losing it, and most diet books don't talk about that.

This book is filled with boring, tired advice that either makes no sense or directly contradicts the most recent advances in nutrition science. A lot of it sounds suspiciously like the diets (and diet diaries) I used when I was in my twenties (40 years ago). Forcing yourself to eat when you're not hungry?!?! That is beyond ridiculous. What a waste of time and money.

This book is just phenomenal. It all makes so much sense. I have been able to maintain a 50lbs+ loss (via calorie counting and MyFitnessPal) and decided to read this book based on it being so popular with MFP users. The answer lies within the book's most simple catchphrase: Live the healthiest life you can enjoy. If you have had trouble losing weight in the past, read this book and you will be well on your way.

This is the common sense, solid advice that we are all unwilling to take regarding our diets, laid out in a logical, understandable manner that makes you understand what you've been doing wrong and how to fix it. Very helpful since many of diet's pitfalls for many people are mostly emotional and psychological rather than logical, and it helps to take a step back and see this stuff from this perspective.

Review

extremely impressed with the quality of this publication. The linear organization of the book that Raymond Giuliani provides, along with the superb, large photos, makes this a ‘must-have’ for any WWII or AFV fan (IPMS)Any fan of the Sherman tank will want to get this one onto their bookshelf I have no doubt, and historians of the Pacific War will find plenty of detail to interest them, and see how successful the Sherman proved to be in a theater of war where many thought conditions to be unsuitable for their operation. This books is ample evidence of how wrong that was. For the modelers, the sheer number of excellent clear pictures, coupled with the color profiles, will find this a first class reference for so many little details, mostly added in the field rather than in the factory. (Military Modeling)This is a very interesting book, focusing as it does on a very specific topic ( the Sherman tank ) in a very specific place and time ( the Pacific, 1943-45 ). That focus makes this book invaluable to fans of the Sherman tank in general, and also to students of the Pacific War of WWII. The photographs are fascinating, and the accompanying text is informative. Some of those photos will bear repeated examination, as the details shown are so interesting and varied. Detailed views of the tanks and equipment, as well as great diorama ideas are on every single page. The chronological manner in which the book is laid out is very well done, as it allows the reader to see the evolution of the Sherman itself, the tactics employed, and indeed the reader gets a good look at how the war in the Pacific was won through the eyes of Sherman crews. The physical layout of the each island's title page with the very informative maps and "big-picture" view of the specific island campaign provides the reader with terrific background information... (Armor Modeling and Preservation Society, Inc)richly illustrated book is of high visual value for all lovers of the Sherman tank. The photos are of high quality and would be a boon to modelers trying to re-create the variations and battlefield adaptations that occurred due to the diverse environmental conditions and enemy tactics encountered. I want to say I really looked forward to getting this book. Armor in the Pacific is my specialized area of expertise. I am a retired Marine who served in armor unit. The good news is the pictures are fantastic. A person who builds dioramas or models should get this book just for that. And I mean just for that because the bad news is the text is terrible. You will not be able to source this book or rely on it for information. The author cannot tell a late model M4A2 from a M4A3. He constantly refers to US Army units having M4A2's which is simply untrue. Only Marine Corps units had the diesel tanks. I think the reason also is that it is translated from French, and the translation is poor at best. Common military terms and acronyms all veterans will know and understand are completely slaughtered. Then, the author has this quirk about trying to be humorous or witty, I can't tell, but captions such as "The men stupidly put the treads on backwards" simply is not acceptable. Again, if you want a great picture book of US (only) units in action, Marines and Army, great. (There are no pictures of Commonwealth or Japanese tanks, unfortunately). It will serve a hobbyist well. But if you are looking for reliable information and want to source knowledge, forget it. This book is worthless in that regard.

Published/printed in France, the text often contains grammatical errors. There are some mis-identified vehicles in the captions, but overall the photos and the color line drawings are of good value to a modeler.

Tons o' unseen pictures. Great reference for scale mode lets.

Many good pictures and art work. Some of the captions seem to suffer from translation difficulties. Over all a good book.

This is a decent modeling reference that could have been so much better. Many other references are soft cover, flimsy by nature, and filled with small photographs, making picking out details quite difficult. The large hardback format of this book, with large size photos provides a lot of clear historical detail that will enthrall most model builders of Sherman tanks. Thrown in are occasional, very nice color profiles of the vehicles in the photos. The book is laid out in a very nice chronological order by Pacific island campaign. One can see how various models of the Sherman tank were introduced into the Pacific campaign and how tank crews increased add-on armor protection as the war progressed and became more vicious. The truly sad part of this book is the written material, which should be embarrassing for the publisher. The photo descriptions must have been written in French (country of origin for the publisher) and then run through a computer translator, with absolutely no review by anyone who speaks clear and proper English. The result is some sort of pigeon English with incorrect or clumsy wording and with varying past and present tense. Why lay out a nice book, furnish it with terrific visual depictions and then skimp on decent English language editing?

Once again Histoire & Collection have done a out standing job on there book about Shermans in the Pacific . I was very impressed with the book. It will make a very good addition to my collection

Very pleased, fast delivery.

A must-read for everyone studying evolution at all levels, from an undergrad student to a full professor. Many of the ideas may appear obvious to a modern reader, yet the insight of this book is tremendous.

George Gaylord Simpson (1902-1984) was one of the most influential American paleontologists of the twentieth century. In the new introduction he wrote for this edition of his 1944 book, Simpson states, "My main aim was to explore and in a way to exploit the fact that paleontology is the only four-dimensional biological science: time, 'tempo,' is inherent in it. Thus the aim of this book, which I think it accomplished, was to bring this dimension squarely, methodologically, into the study of evolutionary theory." (Interestingly, he also criticizes as a "straw man" Stephen Jay Gould's interpretation of what "gradualism" in evolution means.)Simpson argues that "Segregation or selection of intragroup variability can give rise to new groups at a potentiallly rapid evolutionary rate.... this process is important and typical in speciation and in lower levels of differentiation." He adds that "Theoretically saltation might result from a single large mutation ... or from the sudden segregation or recombination of pre-existing genetic characters."Stephen Jay Gould and Niles Eldredge (architects of "punctuated equilibrium") were attracted to this aspect of Simpson's book: "Size of population is one of the dominant factors in determining tempo and mode in evolution," and "Thus the most rapid possible evolution must occur in populations of minimum size. Such evolution will usually lead to extinction, but in a large number of trials it will not always do so."Such creative ideas are needed because "This regular absence of transitional forms is not confined to mammals, but is an almost universal phenomenon, as has long been noted by paleontologists." Simpson rejects, however, Goldschmidt's "hopeful monster" mechanism (proposed in his The Material Basis of Evolution: Reissued (Silliman Milestones in Science)) on the grounds that "he quite fails to adduce factual evidence that his postulated mechanism has ever produced or ever really could produce such an effect."He proposes "quantum evolution" (defined as "the relatively rapid shift of a biotic population in disequilibrium to an equilibrium distinctly unlike an ancestral condition") as a solution, and notes that "The hypothesis that there were unusually high rates of mutation at certain times in the past ... is attractive to the point of seduction."Interestingly, Simpson says in a footnote, "As a matter of personal philosophy, I do not here mean to endorse an entirely mechanistic or materialistic view of the life processes. I suspect there is a great deal in the universe that will never be explained in such terms and much that may be inexplicable on a purely physical plane."This is a very significant work of interest to anyone with an interest in evolutionary theory.

This book has a very good selection of quilts (16 in total) that vary in size from 13.25" square (Nine Patch Chain) to 57.5" square (Basket Parade). Some quilts are pieced, some include applique, and one includes pineapple blocks that are paper-pieced. While I'm not a fan of quilt patterns made up of very simple/common blocks but Jo pulls it off. For example, one small quilt named Antiquity (15" x 21") is made up of quarter-square triangles and borders. I'm not exactly sure why, but I found the little quilt charming rather than a waste of book space. There are a few others that are comprised of four-patch blocks yet they all work at being appealing and making me want to dig in my scraps to make them.I find that the way Jo frames the quilts (with borders, setting triangles, etc.) really elevates their appearance. The blocks that comprise the quilts in the book are small...did I mention SMALL? In Antiquity and a quilt Named Winslow Ally, for example, the blocks are only 2"!! Many other quilts have big blocks - like 4" (chuckle). With each quilt Jo writes a little about the quilt or the blocks within as well as how she uses/displays it in her small bungalow. One quilt made me smile because Jo mentioned that she had made the blocks years earlier and then finally combined them into the quilt. (Sounds very familiar...doesn't it?)Even though Jo uses the back-basting applique technique for her applique blocks, any applique technique (even fusible) could be used to successfully complete any of the quilts that include applique elements.Even though many of the quilts include simple fabric pieces, I feel the book may not have enough piecing instructions for a beginning quilter.Bottom line: If I had do-overs, would I buy the book again? Yes, most definitely because out of the book's 16 quilts there are 11 that I'm seriously considering making because the sizes of the quilts (although you can always add more blocks are eliminate some) are perfect for putting on end tables, draping off book cases, etc. There's even one that would be perfect hung in my hallway across from my newly remodeled guest bathroom. It doesn't get any better than that!

Anything using Civil War fabric attracts me.

My mom is a quilter and loves Jo’s books. This is no exception. Great gift for the quilter in your family.

Love her books. Many choices of projects to make.

Jo did a great job on her third book. Love all the little quilts. I can’t wait to make one of these quilts

lovely little book

Great book, arrived quickly

Beautiful patterns, love it!

Yes, this is $6 for 27 pages. That seems insane because you can get the whole Puerto Rico Moon Guidebook for $13.50 and it has 276 pages. Yes, that's right, 10x pages for only 2x the money. But that is is stupid math. How much of the big guidebooks do people actually use? Most of the content is for places you'll never see, so its just several hundred pages of dead weight in your bag and its annoying to open up the giant tome to find what you need. Its the utility of the book that matters, not the number of pages. When I'm traveling and spending more than a few days in a given location, whatever guidebook I have is always worth its weight in gold. A few bucks is nothing to quibble over - good information makes all the difference. And when I spent 5 days in Vieques recently, this book was all I needed. In terms of the content, never buy a guidebook that is more than a few years old. This one was borderline - published in mid-2008, which means it was written probably 3 years ago. A lot can change in 3 years. Ferry routes get cancelled, restaurants close, hotels jack up prices - all of which were problems in this guide. I was also pretty disappointed in the depth of coverage. They could have easily added a dozen more pages and provided some incremental info without going overboard.Net/net: I like the small size and geographic focus. But they have to do a better job of keeping that info undated and providing more nerdy/interesting details.

I found no inside information in this travel guide that you can't find in one of the major guides like Fodor's or Frommer's. Plus with the major travel guides you get info about the rest of Puerto Rico too.

Structures: Or why things don’t fall down A very interesting book, covering a wide field of topics, from the ground up you might say.Basic concepts of forces are addressed. Compression, tension, shear and torsion forces, and their occurrence in everything from bridges, ancient coliseums, trees, boats and human biology. This, the author does very well; constantly interweaving the effects of various types of strains and stresses and fractures as they occur in wood construction and metal beams, as well as human skeletons and arteries.Reasons for, and types of failure are described for wood, concrete, boat sails, steel, femurs and aortas. Advantageous shapes of design for handling wind and accepting impacts are given, and reasons for spoke wheels. Critical and safe limits of fatigue and fracture are described…historical cases are offered, describing why early aero planes crashed and bridges fell down, and why boats capsize.Cautions are pointed out. Over design of repair: The repair must work in harmony with the repaired material, and not be so unyielding that it works against it. So many invisible forces of tension and compression are at play, and violation of acceptable limits must be watched for when they manifest in fractures.Different approaches to bridge trusses are explained, not so much mathematically, but in concepts of load bearing and the transference of force throughout the truss. By way of example, Bowstring bridges seem quite clever in design, where the internal force of the arch pulls the roadway below it taught so that the whole thing is held in equilibrium like a bow and arrow on a giant scale. The all important “thrust line” is a constant theme from chapter to chapter. Now I know why those old cathedrals have so many spires and spooky statues way up there, and it’s not for warding off evil spirits, it’s because they’re heavy. There are photographs, all clumped together in the middle of the book. Black and white, kind of blurry, but still a helpful aid. Very nice drawings, not blurry, and graphs are abundant in all chapters to help visualize the topics being discussed. These and many more topics and application fill this book, none of it came across as boring or dry.Beyond the final chapter, a few concepts are given a light mathematical treatment. Moments in I-beams, deflections in cantilevers and so forth. The pages are made of sturdy heavy paper, the printing is nice size and clear for those who require reading glasses, with ample space around the print for making marginal notes.

I wish Gordon was my Strength of Material Professor. His grasp of the subject is only exceeded by his writing skills.Reminds me of Richard Feynman in his knowledge and his ability to teach a complex topic..BTW this is on the recommended book list of Elon Musk. That's a nice endorsement.

What this book does very well is demonstrate the scientific process from a practical and engineering perspective. The book is written sort of like a narrative, and the historical descriptions take on a nearly first-person feel to it. It's almost like 'you' can experience the evolution of thought and understanding of structural mechanics. It's as close to a representation of how science is actually done as I've seen. Very unique.FYI though, the guy tends to get a bit verbose and it sometimes feels like words were added to make his stream of consciousness writing make sense to others, but not enough words were taken away later.

I thought this would be a bit dry, but it's geared toward the layperson, and it's informative and entertaining.

Written by an Englishman with dry wit, this is a textbook that lay persons such as I can read smoothly and enjoyably. There are 24 photo plates in the middle, and stick drawings on almost every page. Mathematical formulas abound, but if you don't like math, you can skip the formulas and continue reading with pleasure.

This classic book was a good read, especially the dramatic stories told with humor of old technology in ships and bridges when they failed. I read it due to Elon Musk's recommendation in his list of "must read" books. I learned here the basics of structural engineering, at least qualitatively. However, I didn't like the poor job done turning this into an ebook. Many of the scanned illustrations were of poor quality and the text had many mistakes caused by poor optical character recognition (OCR) and poor proofreading. Luckily the author's intent was usually clear, even though the OCR errors were plentiful.

There are two kinds of books engineers need to read--the dry, math-bound classroom textbooks that allow them to believe they can precisely analyze their creations to two decimal places, and the practical, generalist books like this one that explain why all that math does nothing to prevent their creations from breaking into multiple pieces. Tension and compression, stress and strain, and the dreaded torsion are the subjects of this book, but its real accomplishment is explaining the reality of structures--where the mathematically ideal tension of a rope meets the concomitant but difficult-to-quantify need for attachments at both ends. The author does this with a fine English wit and easy-to-follow prose. One of my chief recreational interests is the design and construction of experimental aircraft, and pretty much every topic discussed in this book is pertinent to that activity. In particular, the sections on work of fracture and crack propagation are explained better here than in any design book I've ever read. A must-read in my opinion for anyone involved in structural or mechanical designs.

I read about 20 books/year, This book is literally one of the best books i have ever read in my life. Math is very minimum some complicated stuff but very rare and a must read for every Mechanical/Civil engineer.

The first half of this book gets 5 stars without qualification. It is a clear explanation of the archetypes that appear in the most fundamental stories, how they work together, and the ultimate purpose for telling stories. He then uses this archetypal system to analyze stories through the ages, down to very recent years. I found his analysis of Shakespeare, for instance, very helpful. This is what I bought the book for, and I am not at all disappointed. In some ways this book is not as immediately useful as, say, 'Save the Cat' and others like it are useful for screenwriting. However, I think this book delivers the groundwork for stories--the groundwork beyond which we cannot go. Its information is more fundamental than the 'Save the Cat' types. If I were a literature professor, this might well be the book I started with.As he moves into how stories have gone rogue, trying to escape from the archetypal patterns, the book begins to become repetitive, and the tone begins to change from that of confident lecturer to exasperated preacher. But these chapters are still valuable. Then he applies the archetypes to history, and things become not only repetitive, especially if you already know something about history in general and the history of religion in particular, but also without clear focus. I'm not sure he is always correct with either his facts or his analysis, although generally I consider him authoritative. It also seems to me that he is projecting the archetypes onto history, which is one of the things he warns against.Still, I find his thesis very useful, which in short is that as we lose touch with our religious ties to God, and therewith our ties to the Self (Jung), we become isolated and egotistical, on both the individual level as well as the national level. And, furthermore, that story structure can tell us how we are deficient if only we have the humility to look for it, again, both as groups, even nations, and as individuals. Ultimately these could be the most profound and important chapters of the book, but a good editor would have been useful to sort them out. For me, they were a bonus: not what I bought the book for, but a welcome introduction to the possibility of using stories to heal ourselves.

This book is actually many things:- An introduction to the seven basic plots and their many associated archetypes that work in combination.- A system. It can be applied to any story you know (and it’s fun to do so).- A tool. An almost obligatory read for anyone who invents stories. If you don’t tap on this 37 years research you’re simple on disadvantage. It’s not that everyone should follow the author's guidance in order to write stories that fulfill the self and not the ego, on the contrary, a writer might find herself not wanting to do so, but the structure the book provides is a map to decide when and how to move away or within the Self archetypical path.- A partial and moral history of literature, and an even more partial and equally moral history of Western culture.- A psychoanalis of our modern western culture, throughout the stories we invent and the ones we tell ourselves. And it's, indeed, a moralistic analysis, something that can pull the nerves of a grownup reader.- A compendium of great and diverse stories.- A source of unexpected spoilers (if you read the book be very careful with this, for it reveals the plot of so many stories and books, that chances are it will spoil something you want to read. I had to overlook several paragraphs when reading). The Odyssey versus Ulysses, E.T. versus Encounters of the Third Type, Terminator versus Frankenstein… in each comparison the author prefers the first and rejects the second option. Interestingly, this framework (or as I called it: system) allows strange and yet consistent and justifiable comparisons, such as Jaws versus Gilgamesh (borrowing a famous gedankenexperiment from Chomsky, if someone told these two stories to a martian, it will think they are just two slightly different versions of the same). It’s refreshing to see how the author jumps without loss of continuity from Hollywood B movies to universal classics. And this tool's lack of respect for the boundaries between high and low cultures (the below-the-line and the above-the-line archetype), which is itself a moral construct, compensates, in my opinion, its otherwise unbearable moralism regarding other aspects (ego versus self). In summary: vaccinate yourself against moralism, enjoy this awesome construction and the many stories it contains, be aware of spoilers, and use what you learned to write great new stories.

THE SEVEN BASIC PLOTS by Christopher Booker is a provocative book. The basic idea is that any story can be boiled down to one of seven plots:Overcoming the MonsterRags to RichesThe QuestVoyage and ReturnComedyTragedyRebirthWhat is excellent about this book is the amount of learning involved and the interesting connections made between authors as disparate as Jane Austen and Luigi Pirandello. However, this is a big book at over 700 pages, and I think that part of it could have been condensed.Like other readers, I believe that the strength of the book lies in Part One of the book, titled THE SEVEN GATEWAYS TO THE UNDERWORLD. The following three parts are less strong, mainly because of Booker's contention that any narrative, such as Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN, which doesn't conform to what Booker takes to be archytypal norms, is fatally flawed. That this can't possibly be true is borne out by the fact that is ranked at number 59 on Amazon's list of Bargain Books. Readers continue to love this book some 200 years after it was published. So it obviously isn't "fatally flawed" for them.If you are interested in reading a provocative interesting account of stories, and how they might relate to our psychology, this book is for you. For my part, I think that a strong editorial hand was needed on Parts Two, Three and Four, which were too often filled with silly Freudian cliches. Three stars.
