Excellent content, presented lucidly. Complex matter of course and not written for entertainment but to learn a trade/profession. Good balance of theory and practical examples. Only fly in ointment is the fact that good amount of examples have subtle errors in them. Probably confusing for a student. And I think they have an errata out.

The whole structure of this text is really good. At beginning, the model of distributed system is introduced, which provides me the basic knowledge to reason with the distributed system. Based on this, many fundamental algorithms are introduced. Although the algorithms are given in pseudocode, it makes me understand the wisdom behind these algorithms more directly. After the model and algorithms, various interesting topics in the area of distributed system are introduced. Based on the understanding of previously introduced knowledge, I really find this part inspiring. If you are interested in the area of distributed system, you really should read this book.

This book introduces many distributed algorithms. But failed to explain nicely how they work. It just listed pseudo-codes, but explanation is not clear for readers to understand the logic and confusing in many cases. Also in the book, there is an algorithm which authors themselves developed. The author completely failed to explain their own algorithm. The notation of the variables are really confusing too. And it seems that the optimization of the algorithm is marginal given that the technology grows rapidly. Authors don't provide real-world example in which their algorithms are used.If you are looking for a book that teaches you about distributed SYSTEM, avoid this. If you up for ALGORITHMS, this book might help.

This is a beautiful book. I so wish it had been around a bunch of decades ago! The book covers so many vital aspects of being simultaneously female and sane in this culture today. Here are a few examples, some of which were just not talked about in those earlier days: cultivating good relationships with friends; dealing with other girls who can be competitive; asserting oneself with healthy, sensible boundaries; coping with challenges in school; defining and maintaining a healthy relationship with technology; addressing body image issues and the nonsense (!!!!) that the media feed young women about physical appearance; understanding emotions; spirituality; and above all, ways to develop & nurture an airtight connection to one's own deeper self. I love that author LIndsay Sealey encourages girls to find a place of stillness and silence where they can hear their own evolving voice of reason and strength as they grow more independent. So much good for preteen girls - so many fine ideas for protecting them from the onslaught of less constructive attitudes, pressures, and incessant noise from the outside world.This book would make a great gift for parents, teachers, and anyone else who has anything to do with young girls. The book is attractively laid out and presented, with numerous uplifting quotes, a "Cultivating Connection" section at the end of each chapter, and a final "Resources" chapter full of positive suggestions for further growth. Having grown up in a very different age, ("Always let the boy win, girls!) ( "We don't need to have lab sciences for girls - they'll just get married and have babies." - spoken by a professor at a women's college) (Girls can only be nurses, teachers, secretaries, or wives and mothers.") etc. etc. etc., I so appreciate the strong, empowering messages here that can help young girls (and perhaps some of us older ones!) keep focused on the things that really matter.

As the father of two girls quickly approaching the dreadful teen years, I’m willing to listen to any advice that may assist me in preparing for that adventure. Lindsay Sealey’s GROWING STRONG GIRLS offers practical guidance on how to adapt and manage the challenges facing girls these days.Unfortunately, growing up these days isn’t has simple as it was when I was a kid. Yeah, the “everything is relative” argument works on some childhood issues, but the internet and social media is a beast I couldn’t have fathomed as a child … it changed everything. What I like about Sealey’s book is that while she encompasses the full spectrum of girl-issues, she spends a good amount of time dealing with the internet throughout as it tends to wrap its tentacles around many critical aspects of girls’ lives.GROWING STRONG GIRLS is divided into twenty-eight easy-to-digest chapters. Each chapter focuses on a specific aspect of life that impact young girls, starting with the premise of being true to one’s self and covering other issues as “mean girls”, dealing with setbacks, social media, planning ahead, etc.. What I liked about the book is that the chapters all follow a pattern that thoroughly explain/detail each topic and end with colored inset labeled “Cultivating Connection” that suggests conversation starters with daughters that incorporate the advice/lessons/objectives Sealey writes about. There are also additional colored insets and sidebars at the end of chapters that provide resources (books and websites) for both girls and parents. Motivating and insightful quotes from well-known females are peppered throughout the entire book. GROWING STRONG GIRLS maintains a positive position from beginning to end … the entire book is aimed at being uplifting and encouraging and I did not find any aspect of the book to be alarmist, gloomy or negative.While I applaud the uplifting/positive approach to the subject matter, GROWING STRONG GIRLS tends to be a little “sugary” at times. As I read, I felt that the author was speaking to females/mothers not fathers. It would have been nice if the author would have incorporated more of a father’s perspective into the conversation and taken less of a girl-speak tone … I see my role as a father is being critical in my daughters’ ability to establish/cultivate relationships with males throughout their lives. But, for the most part, Sealey offers tangible food-for-thought on how girls develop emotionally: the self-criticism/insecurity (everyone has flaws, those flaws make you unique), overcoming setbacks/failures (failing doesn’t mean you’re a failure … turning setbacks into learning lessons), nutrition (food as fuel for a healthy life, not a crutch) and social media (being yourself, not how others want you to be). I did get a chuckle out of the list of positive role models for girls: Simone Biles and Bethany Hamilton (sure) … Lena Dunham (huh?). One aspect of the book that I liked is that it does not ever seem to take a preachy approach and approaches the subject matters in a discussion-oriented format. As a parent, I found it helpful in pointing out issues and solutions that I might not have considered … the guidance is to better inform parents in developing an approach to their growing daughters … it does not attempt to tell you how to parent.Overall, GROWING STRONG GIRLS is a nice resource to get parents (mothers and fathers) thinking. While I felt the material appears to be aimed at females, I certainly find it being a decent source of information for fathers as well.

This book has some very good resources in it for parents of girls 9-16. It talks about what being strong means, but more than that, it gives you simple ways to cultivate meaningful conversations. It offers good suggestions to adults of different kinds-Parents, Teachers, Coaches, Mentors. It has activities you can do, questions to ask, and reasons behind all of those. I found that the theory portions were a bit repetitive, but that was OK b/c the practical advice was so that made it worth the read. I am so glad I found this now (my daughters are 6 & 8) and there are many things in here about being intentional with my relationships with them that I am going to be able to utilize. Overall, it's a good book with very well organized and thought out practical applications that will have you encouraging your girl to be strong!

I have found this book to be so helpful when communicating with my daughter. It has lots of conversation starters to get us talking about things that should be addressed, but can be difficult to bring up. The book talks not only about a girl's relationship with parents, but also how she should develop and maintain relationships with other people. It points out that a friend who will easily dismiss you for her own gain is no friend at all. It also covers social media, which is an issue I never would have dreamed could be a problem when I was growing up and when I first had kids of my own. Basically, this book shows the steps to help your daughter find her confidence, high self esteem and make good choices in life. Many of the lessons in here can also be applied to boys, making it a good book for parents of any gender.

This makes finding a certain particular predicate rather cumbersome when looked up frequently. 3. Minor typos.Otherwise, no one serious about Prolog can afford to overlook this book.

Luke Timothy Johnson begins his study of the practical issue of how decisions are made in the church by admitting to a bias: that there ought to be a connection between what the church claims to be, and how it does things. Because the church claims to be a community of faith, it does not reach decisions simply on the basis of good management policy, or the analysis of market trends, or efficiency, or even ideological consistency, but in response to God's activity in the world that presses upon us and urges us to decision. Faced with how to respond to God's leading, the church decides what to do on the basis of two realities: Scripture and discernment. Because it calls the church into being Scripture is the fundamental authority in the church's life. Yet it is not enough for a congregation simply to turn to the Bible when a decision must be reached, for Scripture does not directly address all issues which face the church today, and those it does often reflect greatly differing historical and social contexts than our own. Thus, added to the authority of Scripture in the church's decision making is a process of discernment, in which the members of the community, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, recall how God has worked in their lives as individuals and as a community and discern together God's direction for the future. Johnson argues that this very pattern of decision making can be found in Scripture itself, notably in one of the central events of the book of Acts. Beginning with the conversion of Cornelius and culminating in the Apostolic Council of Acts 15, we see how a string of smaller narratives combine to tell the story of God's movement within their midst, and how thisnarrative became the basis for the reinterpretation of Scripture and the inclusion of Gentiles into the fellowship of the church. Looking at a number of thorny issues facing the contemporary church, Johnson demonstrates how the interaction of Scripture and discernment can and must become the basis for how we respond to the decisions with which the church wrestles today.

All of church members should read this book - if we can not learn how to discern what God has planned for us as individuals and as a family...how can we figure it out as a congregation....READ THIS BOOK!!! LTJ is an amazing writer, amazing person, and has many wonderful things to teach us.

This is a book by Timothy Luke Johnson, which is a pretty well known name in the churches of Christ, and mostly for Christianity in general. This book will end in a direction that few, if any members of the churches of Christ will go, but the process of the journey is worth the reading. The book goes into the process of discernment of the early church. The majority of the work, and the material that is the most insightful is from the exegetical research into Acts 10-15. This is the famous discussion of the Cornelius situation. For us today, this is safe territory, but for first century Jews, this was radical teachings and behaviors. He charts the process of the group seeking to discern the will of God in this situation. You have those appealing to the Old Testament doctrine, the example of Christ, both ways (gentile mission or coming to the Jews), and the process of discerning the acts of the Holy Spirit. Some of his insights into the process of group discern are great. He states "Groups have, therefore, only limited tolerance for diversity. When that tolerance is overstepped , the group will either dissolve or make decisions." p. 14. And he observes "Many group decisions, as a result, tend to be made implicitly, following the path of least resistance. This is the path of "what we have always done."p. 16. Throughout the book he attempts to create a model for narrative discernment within the body of Christ. He highlights some of the misuses of the Bible. "Sometimes the talismanic use of the Bible is obvious, as when we swear on the book or incense it. Sometimes it is more subtle. Is it "theology" to extract a handful of verses, arrange them in a set of propositions, and apply them to every circumstance without ever actually reading them?" p. 46). But before you believe he goes with a reader response method, he believes strongly in discerning truth. "reader. The authority of the community is absent, the authority of the creed is not determinative, and now even the authority of the text (as some sort of historically verifiable entity) is abandoned. What remains is the principle of free interpretation, rooted in the subjectivity of the individual reader. What remains, in other words, is chaos." p. 50. His work on the Acts chapter is just great. It is interesting the process that the church went through. There was a radical departure from circumcision, but there is the respect to tradition of the blood laws. He continues the book through a study of Paul's process of discernment. And provides some advice for the community of God today. He moves in a radical direction, at the end when he uses this model to cast out all teachings on homosexuality, and the role of women in the worship. But the journey is deep, but the conclusion is shocking.

Johnson begins conveniently by defining terms and concepts to be used throughout the book.Johnson defines church as by various terms throughout, including an intentional community, a living organism (juxtaposed to an organisation), but perhaps the most fundamental is this: 'The church in the strict sense is found where there is a specific group of people who assemble together to call on the name of the Lord in prayer and fellowship.'Key to the definition and existence of the church is faith. Faith is defined as the response in trust and obedience, a deeply responsive hearing of another's word or call. Faith in God, theological faith, the faith of the church, is therefore the hearing of the call of God. And the distinctiveness of the community called 'Church'Johnson's definition of faith is different from many theologians in that is requires a recognition that God acts now, and continues to act. Johnson's faith is 'not attachment to a body of doctrines but a process of responding in obedience and trust to God's Word,' which continues to speak to us through the interpretive prism of community and experience.Johnson then proceeds to discuss the normative use of scripture, which he returns to in each chapter. Two quotes are essential from the text here: 'It is an expression of the church's faith to regard these writings as prophetic for every age, and therefore as speaking God's Word.' Also, 'The theologian serves the church by allowing the text from the past and the text of the present to enter mutual interpretation.'Johnson proceeds to discuss techniques to show how diversity of voices can be recognised and accepted without any single voice being dominant or neglected. These include typology, midrashic, and allegorical techniques in reading, which each have their own pitfalls. Johnson contends that the literary diversity of the New Testament provides a framework for a plurality of faithful responses, individual and communal, to the Word of God.In the second and third parts of the book, Johnson moves beyond theory to talk about issues regarding specific applications and how they inform the general principles of decision making in the church.In talking about difficulties, Johnson concentrates on Acts 15 as a model (often neglected, as he characterises it). He states that the narrative aspects of the prophetic witness is key to the process, 'because it gives the fullest picture in the New Testament of the process by which the church reaches decisions.'Moving on to decisions, Johnson gives us examples of decisions that were made by the early church, but says that they do not provide a good model for decision-making, as they primarily concentrate on the outcomes rather than the process.Discernment is described by Johnson as a vague but necessary and very real part of the decision-making process, akin to (and derived from the Greek words for) testing and judging, as well as understanding. Again, Johnson (interpreting Paul) is more concerned with 'the integrity of the ekklesia, God's convocation' than with individuals, who have a responsibility in discernment (in a later chapter he discusses the mutuality of responsibility of listener and speaker in this process), but not necessarily a decisive one. The goal for discernment is holiness and edification of the entire community.Johnson proceeds under the Practice section to concentrate primarily on three topics as illustrative of his model of decision-making and discernment: the status of women (leadership), homosexuality (fellowship), and possessions and economics (stewardship).In Johnson's final chapter, he discusses the need for a 'conversational model' of hermeneutics that involves leadership and fellowship in a broader and more listening mode than has existed, and that the responsibility for theological thinking and speaking needs to be carried to all members of the church.The primary question I would ask of the book as a whole is, How do application of the principles of discernment and decision-making work for a church organisation that goes beyond the parish/local congregation level? Can the principles of listening and decision-making be applied to a macro-organisation such as regional/national/international churches in a constructive and thoughtful way in the same way they are applied at local levels? And what becomes of local discernment when it is out of line with the discernment and decision-making of the larger organisation?Johnson gives many examples, again arising from the diversity of voices found in the scriptures, of different circumstances and applications, and looks for general principles that guide all decisions, which include a listening to narrative experience, leadership by the Holy Spirit, and discernment in community. Johnson admits that this is often a vague process, and that care has to be taken in making sure that 'the proper spirit' is being heard -- he even gives examples of how Paul seems to violate his own principles (leaving aside the possibility of later revisions/redactions of the text and such problems), which remind us of the passage read at the beginning of the course about listening to other gospels, even if taught by angels, etc. Johnson categorises the status of women as an issue of leadership and the issue of homosexuality as one of fellowship. I would argue that both could be reclassified under the other's heading. I would have liked for Johnson to expand upon the Devices section, and perhaps include more on how to reach those outside the church (if indeed the church is supposed to be evangelical -- calling out to the world to bring those outside in).I am biased in that Johnson was a professor of mine during my undergraduate days at Indiana University, and I have read almost everything he's ever written. He is very consistent; many points will be made across chapters and books using the exact same language and construction. The readings for this evening will provide a good framework for further discussion of how communities form their identities, canons and codes of action.

Dr. Johnson has updated this book, making it a fantastic resource for anyone interested in the ways the church should use scripture to discern the will of God. Johnson hits important issues, including the place of homosexual Christians in the church, but rather than using the book as a soapbox to take stands on issues, he uses the issues to demonstrate the way scripture is used and understood. The book is helpful to religion/seminary students and clergy, but is accessible to lay persons who care about making scripture the basis for their decisions and those of their church.

Interesting short read full of facts.

The author and photographer of this new guide to the Ephrata Cloister show their love and understanding of this unusual historic site. John Bradley does a wonderful job of capturing tons of history and the flavor of this religious experiment in a few, well-crafted words. The photographer, Craig A. Benner, obviously selected only the best of a lifetime of great photographs that take you to all corners of the Cloister and capture the distinctive look of the medieval-style architecture and peaceful atmosphere. There's nothing in my extensive collection of books on this site that captures the experience of this unique place as well as this book. Short of a visit there's nothing I'd recommend more... and then, the book would serve you well with it's map and site guide.

Very interesting book of German monastic life in Pennsylvania.If I only could turn back time ...Monastic life ended there, due to a celibacy, that had no fans for it.

FOREVER GIRL by Rebecca Hamilton is a read that’s perfect at midnight or any other time! It effortlessly straddles the line between inventive thriller, mystery, teasy-hot romance and spine-tingling adventure. It’s sort of like having the perfect beach day and a romp through the cemetery on Halloween happen at the same time!Sophia Parsons is in the midst of a dilemma. She has a strange static in her head that she can’t seem to get rid of. Is this curse simply the result of having an analog tuner set between channels? That’s what she needs to find out, but it’s hard when you’re unable to talk about the problem. Sophia decides to conduct her own investigation, and along the way, meets a whole host of characters —including a hot guy named Charles with the dreamiest teal eyes. *drool*I’ve gotta say that this novel delivers on all levels. Beautifully written, there’s snappy dialog, a very imaginative storyline, and some of the best descriptive passages I’ve read in a quite a while. These sections are uber important since they allow the world Ms. Hamilton created to fully spring to life. The protagonist Sophia is likeable with a very quirky way of phrasing her thoughts and emotions. She’s feisty, but very vulnerable. It’s a tricky balancing act, but this uniqueness is key and carried throughout the cast. All the members of this ensemble are each given a uniqueness that makes them interesting and keeps them from being all lumped together in some awful fondue-like mélange. While it takes more time for an author to imbue each with their own personality and not make them stereotypical, it’s a joy for the reader and something we appreciate.The pacing is taut with just the right amount of sticky flirty stuff to give us a refreshing respite from the mystery of where Ms. Hamilton is leading us. I loved the interplay between Sophia and her boy … well, “creature” toy. Their growing attraction added a richness to the story, but there was plenty of the paranormal to keep us on our toes and wondering who is what and what team they were really playing on. And you gotta love a book that features Elementals, a hot spot called Club Flesh and the forces of the Universe conspiring to help one little slip of a girl right the bad things going on in the world. In fact, I’d suggest the Universe enlist the aid of about a kabillion more people in that endeavor!I very much enjoyed FOREVER GIRL. Oh, and as for the title: a big shoutout to the backstory and how this particular phrase came about. There’s a story-in-a-story tucked away in here, and gosh do I love that sort of thing! Nothing gives me more chills than when someone adds in a flashback where we’re taken through history and allowed to see what really happened through a character’s eyes. It’s bang on done right and I thoroughly savored that excursion into time.I HIGHLY recommend this book and suggest you pick yourself up a copy. You’ll appreciate the attention to detail that Ms. Hamilton uses; she obviously did her homework. But the fact that she didn’t stop there and chose to put her own spin on things is what makes FOREVER GIRL so special and a book you’ll love.

I really don't want to give this book a poor review. I don't understand how more books were published without this being pulled, edited and rereleased first. There is very poor editing. Some examples of this are referring to future husbands mother as "he". In one paragraph the couple is waiting on the couch for friends. The next they are walking (in town?) around the block, waiting on said friends. The next they are back in the house. I guess she changed that scene but didn't edit it well enough to clean it up. Far too much telling!!! One sentence alone is where she begins a chapter with "two months later". Why?! It would take a chapter or two to show the reader how the two grow closer and bond. I don't want summary which is what the reader is spoon fed repeatedly.These complaints aside, I love the uniqueness of the world building and creation theory of vampires. I want to hear more about it. The only reason I finished this book is because I was holding out for more of those snippets regarding the structure and theory of this supernatural world. I really wish the author had a better editor because this could be so much more. As is, after slogging through telling, telling and more telling, coupled with simple editing misses throughout, I will not be continuing with this series or author.

Book 1 in The Forever Girl Series is the new crème de la crème of adult paranormal fantasy novels! I am usually hesitant about spending money on a new author, as I currently have more time then $ right now, but the cover intrigued me as did the other reader reviews so I plunked down my $. From the very first page of this novel I was captivated by the unique tale, intriguing and mysterious characters, fluidity of the narrative, and the inimitable voice of the author.The heroine is 22 year old Sophia Parsons, who besides a practicing Wiccan, is a waitress at Jack’s Diner, just barely making it in her small Colorado hometown. She lives like a recluse (in her inheritance, a colonial- style home) due to the negative public reaction to her involvement in a series of unresolved murder cases. Furthermore, Sophia believes that the multiple noises only she can hear in her head is the result of a curse. Here is a quote from the book:*“Belle Meadow was thirty minutes from Denver but ages from the modern day. This town was a trap, a collection of crazies. Including myself. If Colorado was the heart of the southwest, Belle Meadow was a clogged artery. The ding of the diner’s front door opening brought me back to reality: burnt grease and coffee on the air, along with my duty to serve whoever strolled in. It just so happened that ‘whoever’ was Sheriff Locumb. He entered the diner with a purposeful gait, scanning the room before heading my way.”What will ensue?
