I've bought Garfield books since I was a kid. They've been amusing but not hilarious. This book is no different. It's a fun way to pass a few minutes but little more than that. Kids will enjoy it far more than an adult will, obviously. For the grownups, its best feature is the nostalgia you feel while reading about why Garfield hates Mondays, loves lasagna, and likes to bully Odie. A worthwhile purchase but nothing particularly special.

The "Garfield Eats and Runs: His 65th Book" has been received. We purchased two copies - one for us and one as a gift. My husband enjoys these books immensely and is delighted to add this one to his collection. A second was purchased for our daughter as a Christmas gift. She greatly enjoys the Garfield books and will love receiving this new addition to her collection of Garfield books.

I've been following Garfield since he came out - I have first printings of all 65. I won't say how old I was when this first came out but I was in High School - he's been part of my life for years, and hope he may be able to get me to retirement!

It is possible that I didn’t give this one a fair chance. I did read 8 chapters. Even that took some doing. There was nothing to grab my interest, nor to keep it.It had, for me, the feeling that the writer was just coasting along, hoping an idea for the story might strike. Sorta like when you’re talking, unsure of what to say, so you say, “Uhhh”, and “Ummm” a lot. That is how this story felt, to me. 8 chapters of “Ummm” and “Uhhh”. Finally, I gave up and deleted it from my kindle. For me, this is not a book I would recommend.

This is an outstanding Christmas collection! I love the tender romance and the splashes of suspense by this author. She's one of my favorites! I read these stories when they first came out. Now I'm reading them again and am enjoying them just as much the second time around.

Anyone leaning toward a libertarian point of view should enjoy this book. If, however, you prefer that we continue down the path of socialism that Obama seems to be taking us, you probably won't like what this book offers. After reading this book one has to ask the important question "Is it too late to roll back the size of government?" The book clearly points out the dangers of an ever-expanding federal government. I'll quote for you one passage from the book (page 128) which I believe reveals the author's point of view:"...it is difficult to devise a welfare program that does not produce net harm. Given Man's inclination to acquire wealth with the least possible exertion, programs like these threaten to drag additional people into a cycle of dependency that mankind's inclination to sloth will only reinforce over time. ... Once people realize the government is giving out a benefit for free, more and more people will place themselves in the condition that entitles them to the benefit, thereby making the program ever more expensive, society poorer, and the system more fragile, as a narrower and narrower base of productive individuals is forced to support an ever-growing population demanding benefits."

Thomas E. Woods, Jr., author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History,Nullification: How to Resist Federal Tyranny in the 21st Century, and other historical/political books gives us an up-to-date review of current ecnonomic conditions, what got us here, and a very, very short chapter on solutions.Woods writes from the background of an historian who works for the Ludwig Von Mises Institute, a free market think-tank. I found his book on nullification, the idea that states can nullify unconstitutional laws since they are the 4th branch of government, to be his best work to this point. Woods takes the libertarian ideal as his standard. He shows equal disdain for Republican and Democrat administrations since they all have done basically the same thing: wage unwinnable wars, spend money, and decrease the freedom of the average US citizen. Unfortunately, I can find no error in this assessment.Chapter 1 is 16 pages discussing "Is it already too late?" This chapter is succinct and full of facts and figures that show the magnitude of our problems. This last week, Standard and Poor's dropped the rating of the US debt, showing that Woods is right on target. We all know that we are out of money and running up huge deficits. The question is, can we stop it? Woods suggests that we can't. Given that the last few months have seen partisan political battles over cutting a paltry few billion when our debt increases 100 billion every month, I don't see how anyone can argue that we really have a chance. The massive tea party effort that actually gave control to the Republicans of the House of Representatives has resulted in absolutely nothing of note. Even though the House controls completely the purse-strings, no one will actually draw them tight. Even the Ryan plan, to "cut" a trillion dollars is a gigantic lie. What they mean by "cut" is actually not a cut at all, but means that the government will grow a trillion dollars slower over the next ten years, though the deficit will continue to grow. What kind of a cut is that? The Ryan plan predicts a balanced budget by 2030 - 20 years from now. Anyway, read chapter one for more facts and figures if you have any doubts.Chapter 2 is also short and covers some disastrous policies of the Obama administration starting with Obama-care, the takeover of 1/6 of the US economy. Obama is just the name that fills in the blank in the statement, "__________ was the leader of the US during the most recent disastrous economic policies." The first sentence of the chapter reads, "The looming fiscal crisis didn't originate with Barack Obama, but he sure hasn't helped." The rest of the chapter goes over bail-outs, housing policy, and how Obama has destroyed the rule of law doing things like favoring unions over other creditors. Chapter 3 shows how the government intervention in the economy both caused the current problems and is just making them worse.Chapter 4 is a short polemic on the private bank that oversees our economy for some reason - the Federal Reserve. Chapter 5 takes on the military-industrial complex and quotes the deceased Osama Bin Laden who notes that with our unguarded borders he could send in terrorist attacks at any time but why should he when "We are continuing in the same policy to make America bleed profusely to the point of bankruptcy"? How much have we spent on the war with terrorism in the last decade?Chapter 6 is a long chapter that is clearly the author's favorite subject: "The Myth of "Good Government"". Woods cites failure after failure in some detail. I actually found that a few of these examples were overdrawn. This weakness is why I gave the book 4 stars - along with the rather plain prose during several of the sections.Chapter 7, the last, is a short note of some efforts to fix the economic crisis, while noting that nothing will really be done that works anyway. Definitely a downer to read.Overall a decent collection of data and opinions that comes to the conclusion that we all know the problem but nothing will be fixed until a crisis of unimaginable proportions forces a massive re-structuring. This book is the economic equivalent of Patrick Buchan's demographic doomsday book The Death of the West: How Dying Populations and Immigrant Invasions Imperil Our Country and Civilization about how the current trends mean that there isn't a prayer that America will continue to exist as it is since the groups that are growing (Muslim, Hispanic, etc.) simply do not believe in the American concepts of freedom, limited government, and self-reliance. Like that book, this is grim reading.It is customary at this point of a review of a book like this to say something rousing and hopeful. Sorry. 4 stars.

This book is exceptionally well written. It makes sense of the chaos we now see in or government. It gives the reader some proactive steps he or she may take now to prepare for the inevitable coming of financial collapse in America. The insight I got from reading this book is priceless.

It provides great insight into how the government operates and how the people and the states should react to the central government over reaching its authority.Tom Woods is an inspiration to anyone who believes in freedom, individual liberty and the factual original intent of the United States Constitution. He makes you aware of how the people have been misled by politicians and their mainstream economics partners and the corruption of corporate America through massive government intervention.

Protagonists Debakey and Cooley are both fascinating, driven characters. A glimpse of things to come for author Thomas Thompson. He went on to write two magnificent true accounts of crimes, Blood and Money, and Serpentine.

When i graduated from nurng school in 1967, Methodist in HOuston wss a leader in.CV surgery My critical care instructor trained there and Dr Debakey was the bomb It is ery interesting to learn more about the programs and personalities involved.

The author has written an excellent book about the great heart surgeons of Houston. Anyone who has ever had any dealings with doctors would enjoy reading this book. Consider

I read many parts aloud to my husband. Cofer's gift for portraying the most intense, as well as the seemingly insignificant, moments of her life make this book a blessing for anyone who reads it. Judith Ortiz Cofer in her latest work, The Cruel Country, published by UGP, takes us "behind the veil" and reveals the myriad of emotions that she experienced as her mother was hospitalized and her death imminent, and the affect her death had on her. It is a remarkable memoir where Ortiz Cofer delineates her fears, doubts, loneliness, and guilt as she recounts the memories of her mother, the loss of her father and her father-in-law. She writes, "I came home to face the heretofore unacknowledged fact that death is not a surprise; death is the given" (216) and "When grief has made me heavy and slow, only making the difficult walk to my desk and the empty page or screen, only the ritual of putting down words, fills the empty place, but it does not stay full....there are the loses wrought by time, distance, and aging; there is sorrow; and there are restless spirits that haunt me, that sneak in during the night and empty the shelf again. There is, always, the hueco" (219). I find that words are insufficient to adequately express how phenomenal this memoir is. What can I say, when as I read I was reminded of my own feelings towards my own parents, who are both deceased? What can I utter, when I had to come up for air, as if I were drowning, to deal with similar emotions that invaded my being as I recalled and reflected upon memories of both my parents, and tried to make sense of their lives as Puerto Ricans who came and died in this country? Everyone should read this memoir.

There's something to be said by hearing a story from the person who lived it. What a fight this man put up against those in the government who seem to have been hell bent at putting this man away for the rest of his life. I found myself just shaking my head at the tactics used. Not knocking the government or federal agents in general as my own father was a federal agent, however there were some serious issues here & its worrisome that they were not acknowledged by the government. I also believe it to be a waste of our tax dollars for taking him to trial so many times not to mention obvious prejudice against his name with no success. That alone speaks volumes! I believe he has more than paid his debt to society & I hope the government will move on once and for all. So basically if you're in to the mob stuff & following trials then you will probably like it too. Plus to hear about his dad feel more authentic coming from his son compared to just a random writer writing his thoughts on the John Gotti.

Gotti was born into poverty in the Bronx in 1940. He was endowed with a great physical presence as would be his son, John A. Gotti. John senior was reported to have a genius I.Q. of 140. Perhaps these formidable endowments propelled him to crime boss status in his young years.The name Gotti eventually became a notorious headline maker and prison life would become a too frequent expectation for the Gotti's. Forced to consume prison toxic tap water Gotti senior would eventually develop head, neck and throat cancer.A most compelling incident related to the prison medical treatment of John J. Gotti began in 1990 with dental implants. The prison warden had an intense hatred for Gotti and prevented outside dental providers from evaluation visits. Gotti developed severe gum disease; most teeth had to be replaced along with a diseased jaw.One of government prosecutorial tactics was to impoverish defendants prior to trial so as to limit resources for investigators and attorneys as needed for any defense success. After 1998 the government seized income properties that would deny badly needed rents for family sustenance to the John A. well written, very informative. Was a bit disturbing to read what John Gotti Jr was subjected to in prison, while being held without bail, at the discretion of the government. Hard not to see that the government had a clear agenda they were pursuing, regardless of the ethics and rules they had to break. Was tough to put the book down once I started reading it. Sure, it lacks plenty of criminal details that most mob books do, but it's not like Gotti Jr is gonna spell out all the crimes he committed that they can't prove. If nothing else, it should be read so that people can see what the government did to an American citizen that was not yet on trial for the crimes he was arrested for; 30+ months of diesel therapy that nearly killed him. And in the end, all that money the government spent holding him in jail, and 5 high profile trials in NYC, it amounted to zilch.
