A mind-blowing book that shows how to combine the beauty and orderliness of Domain-Driven Design (Eric Evans) with the purity and reasonability of functional programming and with the need for making your systems reactive. Covers some juicy category theory and abstract algebra principles without going too deep into the math.

Cannot continuing reading it. The style of writing in this book is so poor that I have to put it down. Barely made it to chapter 3. Don't know if I can pick it up again. The problem is that there are too many transitions and references forward and backward to what was said in the last chapter, last section, last paragraph; to what will be covered next, in the next section, in the next chapter... Ugh. Too much of the author in it also. I don't want to read a technology book and keep remembering there's an author. It's like watching a movie and being constantly reminded that there's a director directing a film. If I wanted an author, I'd read fiction.# # #Some examples from chapter 2:Section 2.3.1, "You've probably noticed that I've been using the term 'pure functions' in the context of modeling behaviors[1]. I did this in chapter 1 as well and explained how purity helps you reason about your functions. To recap, a function is pure if it doesn't have any side effects. And what's a side effect? A side effect is something that's not within the control of the function that you implement. If you're manipulating the filesystem... This section presents optimizations you can perform on your model..." The page has a footnote ([1]) that says this:"You've already seen the virtues of pure abstractions in chapter 1..." [Wouldn't a footnote suffice? Either keep the footnote and drop the reference from text. But don't keep both. It's too silly. Where's the editing here?]Section 2.3.2, "In the previous section, you saw... [Are readers really suffering from such short term memory that they need to be reminded of what they just read?]Section 2.4, "In this book when we discuss domain models, I'll talk about modeling... You'll need to have a clear understanding... This section doesn't start with the theory. Instead, it begins with examples that show you what I mean by ADTSs..." [How about we just get to it instead. And then the reader will probably have a better chance of remembering what s/he just read if that's even a concern.]Section 2.6. "The side bar 'What is an effectful computation?' details what I mean." [Good gracious. If you have to call out your own sidebar, why not just bring it into the text and drop the side bar. The side bar is supposed to be like a parenthetical comment. It should stand outside the main line of reasoning or argument of the text.] # # #To be fair to the author, the fault of style falls squarely on the editor. To be fair to the editor, the style is so pervasive, it was probably hard to know where to begin and where to stop editing it. Feels like they did neither. But if they had done their job, the book would be shorter by about 1/3.A good edit, a good index and appropriate footnotes would have been much more effective aids to the reader.To be fair chapter 1 was a good read. Chapter 2 was so horrendous that I've lost interest.

This book is the perfect guide to implementing real-world use cases that uses functional and reactive programming. After reading the highly-rated red book Functional Programming in Scala by Bjarnason and Chiusano, something was missing after reading most of the book. The thing that was a bit lacking was actual applications of the principles in that book to real-world use cases. This book fills in that missing void. It applies functional programming concepts from the red book and from other sources to present a real, working solution applied to a Banking system and its use cases. I am only halfway through the book, but I wish I could digest the concepts as soon as possible and start applying them to real work.However, this book is not for beginners as most parts of the book can dive in to (pretty) advanced functional programming concepts like Lenses and Free Monads, but for intermediate to advanced Scala and functional programming aficionados this book is heaven-sent.

Functional programming is here and if you are working in the soft field, you at least have to know about it. That being said, while I dont work with Scala in my day to day job, I read Functional Programming in Scala to get familiar with the subject, but that book left me in some type of state where I understood the concept, but was lacking actual hands on to make the concept solid in my head.This books closes this void! That being said, you should get these two books to fully understand the concept and get some great examples to break the door into the functional programming area.The examples in the book are real world examples that make sense.

Functional programming is, in a sense, the next step in the evolution of pattern-based programming and this work by Debasish Ghosh helps point the way to building successfully on these functional patterns. Debasish shows us how to unify the world of domain-driven design, as laid out so well by Eric Evans and Vaughn Vernon, with the powerful constructs of functional programming in a way that will lead to better and more maintainable software. Don't be fooled, this is not an easy book to read, at least not if you're new to FP concepts, but if you feel like you want to push yourself to the next level and build better software, this is a must read.Note: I was, at least early on, a technical reviewer for this book. However, I receive no compensation for the ultimate success of this work. I simply believe it's an incredibly useful and important guide and want to ensure others are aware of it.

Last August, our congregation and I began studying the second book of the Torah together...the fascinating book of Exodus. I have always had a deep love for the Old Testament, and have lamented the fact that Christians by and large are ignorant of it’s content, focusing at times almost exclusively on the New Testament. When I heard that Dennis Prager was writing a commentary on the Torah starting with Exodus, my ears perked up. I bought the book the day it came it. I have read the first half (which brings me up to where we are studying in our Wednesday night Bible study) and intend to finish it as we continue studying Exodus. But why would a Christian pastor buy a Jewish commentary and recommend other Christians read it?Here are two reasons:1. Dennis has devoted over fifty years of his life to the study and teaching of the Torah. He speaks Hebrew as well as he speaks English (which is very well, I might add!), and has immersed himself in the Hebrew of the Bible – both its grammar and its vocabulary. As one who doesn’t have that linguistic background, I appreciate his willingness to share this skill with others like myself.2. We are living in an age of unprecedented dialogue between Jews and Christians like none other in history. For me to participate in this God-honoring dialogue, I need to understand where my Jewish brothers and sisters are coming from. In addition, I have a great desire to share the good news of the gospel as found in the New Testament with my Jewish neighbors, as do millions of others Christians. Yet, how can I share my perspective with them if I don’t understand and respect their perspective?Here are excerpts from my review of this book on my blog (which you can find at waynenalljr.blogspot.com):This book is like no commentary I have ever read...and I have read from many of them. It is not stuffy at all. Dennis chose to write it in the first person and to include personal anecdotes where appropriate. What other commentary would quote Maimonides, Abraham Lincoln,...and Woody Allen?...Here are a few quotes from this book which caught my attention:...The central message of the Torah is “that God is good and demands we be good...is the only belief that will enable us to make a good world.”...“People (today) greatly value knowledge and intelligence, but not wisdom. And the lack of wisdom—-certainly in America and the rest of the West – is directly related to the decline in biblical literacy. In the American past, virtually every home, no matter how poor, owned a Bible. It was the primary vehicle by which parents passed wisdom on to their children.”...“The Torah is so different – morally, theologically, and in terms of wisdom – from anything else preceding it and, for that matter, from anything written since, that a reasonable person would have to conclude either moral supermen or God was responsible for it.” (I would put the entire Bible in this category, including the New Testament.)...“Another major reason I am convinced the Torah is not man-made is it so often depicts the people of the Book, the Jews, in a negative light....“Remembering – the good others have done, the evil others have done, and one’s moral obligations – is an indispensable aspect of a good and meaningful life.”...“Biology is not destiny; you can be the child of an evil person and be a good person.”...“Gratitude takes effort; resentment is effortless.” (So true!)I believe there is great value to this work for anyone who is seeking wisdom...whatever your religious background!

In my twenties, when I knew everything, was a hardcore liberal and a self proclaimed atheist (having been born and raised a Catholic), Sean Hannity brought me to conservatism. In my 30’s, I was too bogged down with my first marriage, getting a house, having a child, going through a divorce, and rebuilding my life to care much about anything else. In my 40’s, in addition to finding my loving wife, I found Dennis Prager. Mr. Prager is not a “firebrand conservative” who wants to get you all excited so that you may go out and shout others down. He is a calm, rational thinker. His mind is his weapon, his intellect is his tool, and his demeanor makes it difficult for a reasonable person to simply dismiss him, let alone dislike him. He utterly changed my debating style from “hard hitting, in your face” to “here are my facts, what do you have to say, let’s discuss it”. He is the epitome of the old saying, “you get more flies with honey than you do vinegar”.I had every intention of purchasing this book. In fact, I preordered it. I read the first chapter when he sent it to his fans, and I loved it. I purchased the kindle version for myself, and a hardcover copy for the Reverend of my church. When I saw how nice the book looked, I decided to purchase a hardcover copy for myself to proudly display in my home bookcase of “chosen books”. I have since purchased an additional copy for my best friend. I’ll likely purchase a copy for any of my family and friends who express interest in reading it. It is that profound.I attended a private Catholic school from grades 1 through 8, and I then went to a private Catholic school through high school. Simply put, I learned more from this book about Exodus than I did from all those years in school. Mr. Prager is a brilliant man, who has debated at Oxford University on several occasions. He has been studying the Bible for decades, and his wealth of knowledge is evident in the book. He goes line by line through Exodus, and offers his explaination in layman’s terms. I believe what makes this book invaluable is, Mr. Prager is not trying to convert anyone to any specific religion. One does not feel that buried within his commentary is a certain degree of political correctness out of fear of offense. His only desire is to explain the book of Exodus to you. To, as the title says, explain just how rational the Bible is, when you know it in it’s full context. I have learned so much. To say that this book has strengthened my faith is a gross understatement. Simply put, I wish he would offer his insight on the entire Bible, both Old and New Testament!In closing, who can benefit from this book? Certainly any practicing Jew or Christian. Absolutely any Jew or Christian who is struggling with their faith. Any agnostic who is truly only uncertain becasuse he/she has not read anything compelling enough for him/her to say, “I can believe that”. An atheist who is open to debate, and would like to hear a fair, learned man’s point of view. Finally, anyone would like to read something that can only be described as an excellent perspective on a section of a book over 2000 years and why it’s still a great, if not THE BEST, source of wisdom for human behavior.Bravo Mr. Prager. And from the bottom of my heart, thank you.Louis C.

Dennis Prager is the Paul Revere of the cultural Civil War. This book is a must read for everyone, no matter your beliefs. His main goal is to stimulate the beginning of wisdom. To quote the book, wisdom is rarely valued. A great gift for the young.

As a religious observant Jew I find this book vastly expansive onto a deeper explanation from a wide variety of perspectives. Mr. Prager takes deep care to ensure the reader has proper background and knowledge into the topics which were discussed in the other books while still focusing on the text of the Bible.

I listened to all Prager's audio tapes of his 18-year course on Verse-by-Verse of the Torah. This volume on Exodus reflects on his previous teaching and also has many new thoughts. The volume is easy to use and one can choose a topic and go right to it without having to read it straight through. I can't wait for all the other volumes!

This morning I've been checking out a sample version of this out on Kindle. It's an extremely user-friendly yet thorough commentary on the book of Exodus - and, as usual, Dennis Prager doesn't disappoint. Absolutely superb from what I've read thus far. Can't wait to get the full paper volumes, especially whenever the book of Deuteronomy is released. The other day I heard Prager say that this proposed five-volume set of commentaries on the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament) represents the work of his life - his magnum opus.

Prager is one of our best thinkers writing today. He takes deep subject matter and explains it perfectly. Highly recommended.

When kinetic 10 year old boys ask to read 650+ page novels, that's some powerful magic.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is book 6 in the Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling. It is a thicker book than the previous books, and it is a lot heavier for sure. The quality of the book itself is excellent. Dust-jacket is very nice. Constructed same as the previous books. Story-wise, things just get more and more interesting that you can't put the book down and don't want to stop until you find out what is next after each page.This is my favorite book of the entire series. It is very dark in some places, but the flashbacks into the past in where we learn so much about Voldemort or Tom Riddle are very interesting and engaging. Danger is everywhere. Everything seems to be at risk, and you just don’t know what will happen next. Nothing seems to be safe anymore. There is also a little romance, but tension as well. It’s a pretty big book. A lot of pages to read. But, I was able to read it over a weekend or so with determination.There are so many plot lines in this book, and the pace does not let up from first page to the last page. There are new twists and turns. I cannot reveal without spoiling. This is definitely an excellent book.I recommend this book for sure. It is priced fairly I think on Amazon. If you have Amazon Prime, the 2-day Free shipping is nice.

This is at least my fifth reading of this, easily my favorite book of the HP series. I get more out of each book upon every re-read, and this one especially. One of the great joys of the series, and especially of HBP, is the humor JKR manages to thread throughout the story, even as things are sad, or scary, or serious. The tiny references to Harry's burgeoning affection for Ginny, the way Fred and George manage to slip in one-liners even as chaos is erupting around them, it always feels like a gift from the author. This book, maybe more than any of the others, also really takes the time for character development. This is the book where Hermione becomes one of the great female characters in fiction, and where Harry stops being the victim of constant happy accidents and starts making his own choices. Plus it's just a really great mystery story! And ties in so importantly (obviously) with the overarching mythology.I will always remember receiving this book the day it was published (July 2007, right?), a day I had to go to a wedding and also shop for a big dinner party. I hid the book under my seat at the wedding and kept turning the pages behind my ankles, only looking up at the ceremony every page or so. Then I had the book balanced on my shopping cart, blindly tossing vegetables and cans in as fast as I could. When I got home, I finished the rest of the book by 2am, texting with my sister, saying, "I'm on page xxx." We finished within a few minutes of each other, exchanging comments on what sobbing messes we were. Later that week, I was walking to lunch and saw a girl sitting in the sun outside of the bank (where she presumably worked). She had the book in her lap and her head in her hands, obviously on one of the sad, stressful final chapters. I wanted to just go over and give her a hug.

I got hooked on these books by accident around when the second movie came out. After that, I had to read them all and I was one of those people who would buy the book at the midnight release.The same happened with my mother so I started buying them for her on in large print so she could easily read them without straining her eyes.The story is simple without being too over-the-top fantasy (my opinion) like other series I could never really get into.

The movies are wonderful BUT the Books Are ALWAYS Better! Why? You get the whole story as written by the original author!!! Nothing cut out or story lines Changed Entirely by editors or others who must squeeze and manipulate the ORIGINAL STORIES so as to fill a time slot, or showcase certain (undeserving) actors who wiggle their way into more “air time”...manipulating the original plot lines..It Shows to those of us who know. SO READ THE BOOKS, its like 50% more Harry Potter PLUS “THE REAL, UNDULTERATED, UNTOUCHED STORY. You should buy hard covered books because you WILL want to hand them down to your kids, grandkids, friends, and keep for yourself. These stories deserve re-reading! BUY THE BOOKS, you can get full sets! It is so very worth it and make great gifts for kids or fans of any age. GOOD LUCK, ENJOY!

As I wrote before: I just love all Harry Potter books, they are very engaging and beautifully written. Plenty of details describing characters and the magical world, which combined with Rowling's sense of humor make these books a masterpiece. I'd say easy to read even for a 4th. Grader, but at the same time people from any age will enjoy them. Please let me put them this way: I first watched the movies and I loved them, then I read the books and now I am disappointed about the movies. There is so much detail, important facts, and character development that the movies don't show which makes reading the books a must. Won't be disappointed about the books.

The Sixth Book is when motivations become clear, alliances are broken, and the risks are higher. Two VERY important plot points happen in this book. One is a huge death toward the end of the book, which I won't spoil for new readers. And the other is the background on Tom Riddle and how he came to be Lord Voldemort. You learn about his birth mother and her terrible family, you learn about Tom Riddle, Sr. and his family, and you learn how Voldemort used Dark Magic to extend his life. All very exciting and new stuff happen in this novel.I didn't really feel the length of this book unlike OOTP. Very good read. Obviously if you have gotten this far in the series you would undoubtedly read this novel, so don't delay and finish this book!

Second time buying this book. I originally bought it for my 8 yr old daughter and ended up gifting it to her best friend, also 8, for her birthday. I bought another copy for my daughter to keep. Both girls really enjoy reading it & us moms love the positive messages.

I am very impressed with this book. It is a birthday gift for my 10 yr old grand-daughter. I have read through several pages, and I find it to be very appropriate for her age and those close to her . It would be good for teens as well; full of good advice. It is not a novel but a book of inspirational writings a page or two long. It is something that I would encourage her to read a verse everyday. I have two younger grand-daughters and when the time is right, I will get them a copy, too. Awesome!
