Would You Convict?: Seventeen Cases That Challenged the Law

From Library Journal

Are bad intentions punishable by law? Should a criminal be absolved of a crime if, in the end, that crime somehow benefits society? Is ignorance of the law an excuse for breaking it? The courts grapple with such issues daily. To maintain its moral credibility, argues Robinson (law, Northwestern Univ.), criminal law must guard against any wide discrepancies between deserved and imposed punishment. Here he offers 17 cases that have challenged the law's credibility, giving readers the chance to compare their decisions with those of several hundred persons he has polled and with the decisions of the courts. The result is fascinating reading. However, with almost a third of the book devoted to an appendix of applicable statutes and with a somewhat academic discussion of each case, this is really not suited to the average Court TV fan. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.AJim G. Burns, Ottumwa P.L., IA Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review

"Anyone interested in law will enjoy this book. . . . Highly recommended." -Choice"Paul Robinson, one of our most distinguished scholars for criminal law, has found a novel mode for both communicating the law to lay people and for integrating popular sentiments into the process of law reform. Everyone interested in the problems of moral and criminal responsibility should read this book, formulate a view about the issues, and discuss the problems with others. Make your view heard and the law will become more just!"-George P. Fletcher,Cardozo Professor of Jurisprudence, Columbia University, and author of A Crime of Self-Defense: Bernhard Goetz and the Law on Trial"In this captivating book, Paul Robinson brings to life the central problems of the criminal law in a most unusual way. He confronts his readers with a cross-section of the most perplexing cases the law has to contend with (robbers armed to the hilt for a ‘job', but arrested long before they have had a chance to decide what that ‘job' is going to be; or a killer whose victim ends up dying in a way the killer never foresaw) and tries to get them to ‘solve' the case before revealing how the law has actually dealt with it. Then, based on his earlier pioneering research into popular perceptions of justice, he is able to tell readers how their peers would have judged the same case. It's a book that should appeal to the academic, the student and the general reader alike."-Leo Katz, author of Ill-Gotten Gains: Evasion, Fraud, and Kindred Puzzles of the Law"Paul Robinson's writings have established him as the preeminent authority on what American criminal law is and on what the American public thinks of its criminal law. Would You Convict? Masterfully combines his two fields of expertise. Legal scholars, law students, and ordinary citizens will all benefit immensely from this work."-Dan M. Kahan,Professor of Law, Yale University”Fascinating reading."-Library Journal

This book, written by a law professor, takes real cases and illustrates the complexity of law. Without a bias, the cases make the reader think about how hard "justice" is to achieve in the real world. Gave a copy to my children to stimulate a great discussion.

excellent book. makes you think about life in general.

Every day we read about the another high profile case that when the trial is completed there are what seems to be an endless series of debates. Would you convict is a glimpse into 17 cases that make you think. No one has ever said justice was perfect, but after you read this book you may wonder if there is any justice at all. A great attention to fine details laces this amazing work.Watch and read and one person is given life over a bad check for $129. Your heart may skip a beat as you read about a mother neglected by her son or was she? Each story is stops you and makes you look at the law a little differently. The author's has the unique ability to bring to life each case and you become the jury foreman. This book should be a must read for those interested in law or becoming and lawyer. Well done!

WEB security for the Web 2.0 work. This book takes the reader immediately to an area that is revolutionizing the way we conduct business. The author walks us from the evolution of Firewall and the impact that each new technology such as Cloud Computing, portable devices have on the business environment. It is not only a book that looks at the various technological advancement, it also advocates the social and business benefits of shifting technological paradigms. As illustrated by the author, Tom Gillis --"Change creates winners and losers. The basic principle of Darwinism suggests that is not the strongest species that survive, not the most intelligent, but the most adaptive to change". The book Security for the Web 2.0 world is a testament of things to come, and cautiously remind us of "irrational exuberance" of the past and present.Mario Camilien, CISSP, CHSS, SCNPInformation Security Analyst

Cisco is making a big push into cloud computing and the much bruited Web 2.0. Gillis explains these trends in a concise way, and tries to minimise the technical jargon. The first chapter is distinguished by an excellent summary of how firewalls work. Gillis skips all the low level product details that you typically find in other discussions about firewalls. Instead, he describes that all firewalls are divided into 2 types - proxy and packet filters. And that the latter are now largely represented by stateful packet filters. The relative merits of these are given, along with the trends in the last 15 or so years. If you have another book devoted to firewalls, consider perhaps first reading this chapter of Gillis to orient yourself before plunging into the former.Gillis then goes on to talk about cloud computing. Note however that the two example companies he covers are small. They don't have and cannot afford much in the way of dedicated IT people or equipment. So perhaps for situations like theirs, a so-called cloud remote access, where their data is hosted on some third party data center, makes sense. More plausibly, cloud computing usage may indeed expand, but likely there will always be both cases; of companies using it and others going with their own data centers. The book also delves into the various manifestations of malware, like viruses, botnets, spam and phishing. If you want more details, try Malware: Fighting Malicious Code or The Rootkit Arsenal: Escape and Evasion in the Dark Corners of the System.

This book is an entertaining and fun read and any technology enthusiast should read it. I was able to read this book in two nights and enjoyed it like I was reading Dan Brown's Angels and Demons. The author Tom Gillis clearly explains new challenges faced by IT Security Managers due to Web 2.0, Cloud Computing and mobile workforce. The author clearly explains why Web 2.0 and Cloud Computing are Enterprise management's biggest fear and clearly expose IT's inflexibility. Web 2.0 gives rise to Work 2.0 and whether IT departments like it or not, this trend is here to stay. Today employees work anytime from anywhere using any device and need connectivity 24x7x365 which increases their productivity and job satisfaction. But this trend is major headache for C-Level enterprise executives and IT Security managers as they don't know how to secure this information flow when communication may not even touch their networks like Salesforce hosting your company's CRM and employee access this data using his iPhone. Traditional network boundaries are blurring and it is becoming very difficult to protect data whether it is in motion or rest. Tom also explains Next Generation Firewalls that will not do filtering based on port, protocol and IP but instead will be Content, Application and User Identity aware. How about writing a firewall policy saying "John Doe" from "Engineering" department can access "[...]" and cannot exceed "2 Mbps"instead of IP address x.x.x.x/32 can access y.y.y.y/32 on port 80. I think you got the point :-)The problem statement is clearly defined with many excellent examples and interview excerpts from real enterprises. Last few chapters are fully focused on highlighting solutions for Web 2.0 security challenges and I have to admit, Cisco vision is neat and they are focusing on both On-Prem and Cloud based security solutions. The author didn't go into implementation or design details but ideas like Flexible Identity Fabric and multilayer scanning engines are pretty encouraging. The concept of Policy Management consoles (where enforcement and Policy management functions are decoupled) along with Security Intelligence Operations (SIO) are good initiatives by Cisco.Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and in my opinion the content is very well organized, timely and fresh. Tom Gillis is very knowledgeable and he certainly delivered a book that will benefit many IT managers, executives and staff members.Shahid Shafi CCIE#12665 (RS,Security,SP)

Securing the Borderless Network by Tom Gillis is more of a history lesson than anything else. It's kind of interesting for someone that lived through these events to see a different perspective. The term Web 2.0 is used heavily in various contexts and, I suppose, is as accurate in its use as anyone else. It seems everyone and their dog (whether you know they're a dog or not) has a different take on just what Web 2.0 means to the consumers and creators of information. As of the book's publication Mr. Gillis is VP and GM of the Security Technology Business Unit at cisco so much of the book is from the cisco viewpoint. That's not necessarily a bad thing, just be prepared as you may get the impression that only cisco is involved in making the world's information and its access safe for mankind. This is a relatively small book at a little over 130 pages and a pretty quick read. I recommend it as something to leave on the table in the Executive Lounge a few weeks before you have to present why you actually need to spend some money on information security solutions.Overall, a good quick read and a fast education for the C-level world.

Review

Winner of the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award for a distinguished first book of fictionFinalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award    "Reminiscent of the works of W.G. Sebald, this dreamy, incantatory debut was the most beautiful novel I read this year—the kind of book that remains on your nightstand long after you finish so that you can continue dipping in occasionally as a nighttime consolation." –Ruth Franklin, The New Republic "A psychological hand grenade." –Alexis Madrigal, The Atlantic, Best Books I Read This Year “A meditative and startlingly clear-eyed first novel.” –Newsweek/Daily Beast Writers’ Favorite Books 2011 "This year, literary discovery came, for me, in the form of Teju Cole’s debut novel, Open City, a deceptively meandering first-person narrative about a Nigerian psychiatry resident in New York. The bonhomous flâneur who strolls Manhattan from top to bottom, reveals, in the course of his walking meditations, both more about the city and about himself than we – or indeed he – could possibly anticipate. Cole writes beautifully; his protagonist is unique; and his novel, utterly thrilling." –Clare Messud in the Globe and Mail “On the surface, the story of a young, foreign psychiatry resident in post-9/11 New York City who searches for the soul of the city by losing himself in extended strolls around teeming Manhattan. But it's really a story about a lost nation struggling to regain a sense of direction after that shattering, disorienting day 10 years ago. A quiet, lyrical and profound piece of writing.” –Seattle Times, 32 of the Year’s Best Books “[Open City is] lean and mean and bristles with intelligence. The multi-culti characters and streets of New York are sharply observed and feel just right…Toward the end, there’s a poignant, unexpected scene in a tailor’s shop that’s an absolute knockout.” –Jessica Hagedorn, author of Toxicology in Salon.com “Writers choose their favorite books of 2011” “I couldn't stop reading Teju Cole's debut novel and was blown away by his ability to capture the human psyche with such beautiful yet subtle prose.” –Slate.com, Best Books of 2011 “An unusual accomplishment, ‘Open City’ is a precise and poetic meditation on love, race, identity, friendship, memory, dislocation and Manhattan bird life.” –The Economist, 2011 Books of the Year “The most interesting new writer I encountered this year.” –Books and Culture, Favorite Books of 2011 "A Sebaldesque wander through New York." –The Guardian, Best Books of the Year “An indelible debut novel. Does precisely what literature should do: it brings together thoughts and beliefs, and blurs borders…A compassionate and masterly work.” – The New York Times Book Review “The cool, concise prose of Open City draws you in more quietly, then breaks your heart. Who knew that taking a long walk in Manhattan could be so profound?” –Jessica Hagedorn, author of Toxicology in New York Magazine“[Teju Cole] has a phenomenal voice…prodigious talent, beautiful language.” – WNYC’s The Takeaway“Beautiful, subtle, and finally, original…What moves the prose forward is the prose—the desire to write, to defeat solitude by writing. Cole has made his novel as close to a diary as a novel can get, with room for reflection, autobiography, stasis, and repetition. This is extremely difficult, and many accomplished novelists would botch it, since a sure hand is needed to make the writer’s careful stitching look like a thread merely being followed for its own sake. Mysteriously, wonderfully, Cole does not botch it.” – James Wood, The New Yorker  “Nothing escapes Julius, the narrator of Teju Cole’s excellent debut novel…In Cole’s intelligent, finely observed portrait, Julius drifts through cities on three continents, repeatedly drawn into conversation with solitary souls like him: people struggling with the emotional rift of having multiple homelands but no home.”-- GQ“A complicated portrait of a narrator whose silences speak as loudly as his words—all articulated in an effortlessly elegant prose…Teju Cole has achieved, in this book, a rare balance. He captures life’s urgent banality, and he captures, too, the ways in which the greater subjects glimmer darkly in the interstices.”— The New York Review of Books“The most thoughtful and provocative debut I’ve read in a long time. The best first novel of 2011.” – The Daily Beast “In another novel the city would serve as a mere setting. Cole, though, all but foists it on us in case we might be tempted to narrow our view or even look away.”-- New York Daily News “Masterful.”—Kirkus (starred review) “Intelligent and panoramic…engaged with the world in a rare and refreshing way.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “One of the most intriguing novels you’ll likely read…the alienated but sophisticated viewpoint is oddly poignant and compelling…reads like Camus’s L’etranger.”—Library Journal “Unique and pensive.”-- Booklist “Open City is a meditation on history and culture, identity and solitude. The soft, exquisite rhythms of its prose, the display of sensibility, the lucid intelligence, make it a novel to savor and treasure.” —Colm Tóibín, author of The Master and Brooklyn “The pages of Open City unfold with the tempo of a profound, contemplative walk through layers of histories and their posthumous excavations. The juxtaposition of encounters, seen through the eyes of a knowing flâneur, surface and then dissolve like a palimpsest composed, outside of time, by a brilliant master.” —Rawi Hage, author of De Niro’s Game, winner of the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award “A gorgeous, crystalline, and cumulative investigation of memory, identity, and erasure. It gathers its power inexorably, page by page, and ultimately reveals itself as nothing less than a searing tour de force. Teju Cole might just be a W. G. Sebald for the twenty-first century.” —Anthony Doerr, author of The Shell Collector "If Baudelaire was a young African, wandering the streets of contemporary New York, this is the book he’d write. A melancholy, beautiful meditation on modern urban life, it has echoes of W.G. Sebald and Walter Benjamin and reveals Teju Cole as one of a talented new generation of global writers, at home in the world.”-- Hari Kunzru  “A reader feels the density of [Julius’s] mind but also the fragility of his identity.” – Los Angeles Times “Magnificent…the trip is as meaningful as the destination. Open City is a remarkably resonant feat of prose.” – The Seattle Times “A quiet novel that somehow manages to scream.” – The Boston Globe “Quietly powerful.” – O: The Oprah Magazine  “My favourite novel of the year, dreamlike and meandering, like the best of W G Sebald.” –Alain de Botton, The New Statesman “[A] remarkable and highly accomplished first novel. . . . exquisitely composed. . . .I have read it twice, and I still cannot pin it down to a theme or a type. At once symbolical and precise, part fiction, part reportage or memoir, it is beyond category.”  –Jan Morris, The Independent

One of the most remarkable books I've read in some time! At first, I was drawn in by the beauty of the style-- the gorgeous sentences alone are worth the read--but once you've made it some pages in to Open City, you begin to realize that you are not reading ABOUT a man walking through a city and a moment in culture and history; you ARE that man. Cole has the astonishing gift of understanding how to write movement through time and space so that it is not merely described but directly experienced. The book has many other excellent qualities, but it is this intimate understanding of how to manage cognitive cues in language that makes Cole's work and vision so extraordinary.

at the end of teja cole’s Open City, what becomes clear is that there is no ending. after following the reflections of julius, a bi-racial, german-nigerian, psychiatrist by day, as he wanders around manhattan by night, with walks an overseas trip in search of his european grandmother, in brussels, belgium, many of his reflections on death—the death of a former english literature professor, the death of a grandfather, and the last weeks in the life of the composer, gustave mahler—some sense of an ending, certainly, is expected.and, yet, it is at the end of this first-person confession, this open-ended narrative, to which the moral of the story is ‘life goes on’, that the form becomes evident. for not until the end can one know that there is no intended listener for julius, that the story stands as a personal undated journal by a man who spends quite a bit of time by himself, when he isn’t working, reading philosophy, essays, histories and european literature, attending non-mainstream movies, symphonic concerts, and art galleries and photography exhibitions by himself. an aesthete, a bit of a cosmopolitan.a long-distance relationship falls apart. by chance, on a manhattan street, he is recognized by the sister of a friend he knew in nigeria. she is in a new york biracial relationship. julius doesn’t appear to be looking for a relationship or bothered by sexual desire. he is comfortable as a solitude. he has friends in manhattan, but not close friends, and no romantic interests.during his walks, his color and african features attract the attention of black immigrants from africa and island countries, seeking camaraderie with him, from which julius maintains distance, while lending an ear to the stories of the immigrants who escaped violence, poverty, and oppression, and their struggle to succeed in the united states.in brussels, which became an ‘open city’ during world war 2, he meets university educated muslim immigrants who, unlike their counterparts in the united states, have no gratitude for their host country, express their displeasure for western culture, their experiences as immigrants, and tolerance for forms of islamic rule which would raise eyebrows if openly discussed in many western countries, even in this novel’s pre-911 setting.subtle queasiness pervades cole’s text, giving rise to the disturbing suspicion that julius is using his skills as a psychiatrist to cope for the lack of a fuller emotional and social life and avoidance of his own bi-racial history; that his predilection for the arts, juxtaposed against the social violence he encounters within the world through experience, media, and conversation, functions for him in a manner similar to how personal violence functioned for justin bateman in bret easton ellis’ American Psycho. credit cole’s control of tension for how Open City becomes counter-story to ellis’ novel, both novels exploring existential freedom within the city, questioning who are the free, and by what act of daring their freedom is won or given and maintained.the important difference between the two novels is the inclusion of black immigrants seeking sanctuary in open cities. a new addition to existential literature of violence.

I have been reading fiction of many kinds for many years, and Open City seemed to allow me to pass through a door I didn't know was there. I notice that many reviewers adore the book. For good reason, I would say. If you appreciate introspection, quiet meditations on history, architecture, art, and psychology, they are all here. Cole also has several very touching pieces of relationships that allow a different sort of depth to emerge in his writing. Yes, and then there's the writing itself. Beautiful, distinctive prose. I grew up in NYC and his descriptions of his walks through various parts of the city were haunting and vivid. We see the world through the eyes of a man of mixed race whose heritage seems to remain a problem he is unable to solve. Weread the description of a brutal attack he is subjected to by two young men. His reaction seems strangely muted, as are many of the feelings in the book. At one point he says "..sometimes it is hard to shake the feeling that ...there really is an epidemic of sorrow sweeping our world, the full brunt of which is being borne, for now, by only a luckless few." Perhaps the author and his main character are among them. He is also confronted with the accusation of a long ago rape but an African woman he had forgotten. Here again, he shows little reaction. Perhaps his tendency is to intellectualize, or aesthetisize. We don't learn enough. Some critics here and elsewhere take Cole to task for lacking a plot. True, but I never missed it. The book is interesting and soulful enough to do without it. The main character, Julius, is a resident in psychiatry. There are a few comments about his patients, about psychology generally. All of them are interesting but strangely undeveloped for man in this profession. But he has one great passage about a new head of the psychiatry department that all of us in the profession of psychotherapy should take to heart. He says: "And it was especially satisfying to me, with my stubbornly held and somewhat naive vision, as I approaches the end of my training, of what psychiatry really ought to be about: provisional, hesitant, and as kind as possible." (Amen!)There is much more, including a glowing account of attending a Mahler concert that is likely to stir a desire in most readers to listen to the music he names, whether they have heard it before or not. That's deep and powerful writing. The book is like a tapas meal one wants more of, but also some tastes that are only hinted at. There is a wish for more of thesedishes.

Review

“A rich, dramatic tale that ranges from the personal to the literally earth-shaking.” —Janet Maslin, The New York Times“[A] fine account . . . There are far too many books in which a travel writer follows in the footsteps of his or her hero—and there are far too few books like this, in which an author who has spent time and energy ferreting out material from archival sources weaves it into a gripping tale.” —The Washington Post“[N]o frills, high-adventure writing . . . Millard’s sober account is as claustrophobic as a walk through the densest jungle, and as full of vigor as Roosevelt himself.”—Entertainment Weekly

I HAD to read this book for a book club---and I am soooo glad.Theodore Roosevelt was a wonderful, loving, family man. He was an honorable, brave, adventurer, much loved by his men. The story begins with preparations forRoosevelt's 1,000 mile trip through an uncharted tributary of the Amazon. Candido Rondon, equally famous in Argentina was Roosevelt's co-captain. They traveled with a large group of military men, local laborers, naturalist, a doctor and Kermit, Roosevelt's son. Oh yes, there were beloved dogs alongAs these men struggled to live through disease, hardships, and near starvation, you are there with them. This is Candice Millard's first book. She has the rare gift of having her readers feel the emotions of grief, joy and terror. It is as though you are on the devil river with them. I have never felt such suspense. I read furiously as these brave men struggled unselfishly to survive. "River of Doubt" is a must read.

This was Candice Millard's first book of history and biography, and it was made for her.Millard's style is to take a major figure in history and focus on a single, often obscure slice of the figure's life. In her book on Churchill, it was his early adventures and the Boer Wars in South Africa. Here, she takes an historical look at Theodore Roosevelt's adventures in the Amazon Basin after his two terms as President and his devastating loss for a third term in the three-way race in 1912.River of Doubt is a wonderful story of adventure and misadventure. Its backdrop is a tributary, previously unexplored by Westerners, of the Amazon. It has everything a reader would want: the mysteries and terror of the jungle, the incredible and deadly complexity of the river, the inept preparations for the adventure, the wild and unknown Indians of the region, needless deaths, murder, history, and the bigger-than-life story of the aging Teddy, his son, Kermit, and the rest of the exploration party.I enjoyed it totally. Millard's Churchill book was good, but it suffered from often static setting, mostly in a Boer prison. This book has a built-in momentum, as the ill-prepared group make their way down the river into the unknown. It is the perfect story for Candice Millard, and she tells it perfectly.

I heard Candice Millard on a John Grishham book tour podcast and was intrigued by her background and the meticulous research behind her books. (My gosh, the one she DIDN'T write about Ben Franklin - and why - says worlds about the authenticity this author brings to the table!)This tale of Roosevelt's ill-conceived and ill-fated expedition through the Amazon reads almost as much like a novel as a documentary. I particularly enjoyed the insights into Roosevelt's personality - his earliest motivations and his rigorous discipline to refuse the hand early life dealt him. The same could be said of Captain Rondon, the Brazilian lead on the trip. The science and history lessons are so integral to the story (or the story is so inherent in the science and history) that you'll likely find yourself smarter and wiser and more emotionally attuned to both nature and human nature for having read this book.

What a wonderful book!! Having read previous biographies of "Teedy" I came to this book with an already favorable image of this man who overcame severe asthma in childhood and, indeed, met all obstacles with a sense of perseverance and a firm belief that one must grasp life with both hands and always do the best with the gifts we are given. While this book shows more of his vulnerability, both physically and emotionally, it did nothing to diminish my admiration of this wonderful man. What a National Treasure!!Now I come to the author, Candice Millard. As I continued reading the book I was amazed over and over again at the sheer amount of research and the amount of talent it took to put all these facts into a cohesive and very entertaining story!!I wholeheartedly recommend this book!!!!!! Five stars to the story, itself. Five stars to the author. Five stars to Theodore Roosevelt. My only regret is I was given the option of just five stars.

Candace Millard has written a wrenching story about Teddy Roosevelt's post-presidential adventure in 1914 on the then uncharted River of Doubt, a tributary of the Amazon. He was accompanied by Candido Rondon, George Cherrie, and his 24 year old son, Kermit, among others. She reveals through her well-researched book Roosevelt's phenomenal character, discipline, courage and vitality, as well as his strict adherence to personal sacrifice for the benefit of his comrades, to thoughtful generosity, and to equality of treatment for others even to his own detriment. When his own serious illness became burdensome he even offered his own life to preserve the safety of his fellow travelers. The devotion of father and son to each other was especially inspiring as they confronted death continually from the indigenous tribe on the east bank, from malaria, from starvation, and from the river's torturous rapids. The book underscores our mortality and how dangerous adventures like Roosevelt's simultaneously enhance and reduce our brief existence. Millard has written an historically rich and fascinating work.

While I enjoyed the expedition of T Roosevelt in the Amazon region of South American very much and the difficulties the men went through while following the River of Doubt, I got very tired and somewhat discouraged with the detailed discussion of the relationship of vines, epiphytes and trees; and the life and legend of the bloodsucking catfishes and many other symbiotic relationships between plants, ant and humans. I felt these were "fillers" in the book, of interest to some, but distracting to me. Again, the pre-historic following of the Amazon Indians could be interesting, if I wasn't so interested in how these brave men managed to complete their goal of making it home with diseases, starvation and depression.

In this book Robert Sanderson Mulliken, one of the pioneers of molecular orbital (MO) theory and Nobel prize winner, recounts about his original research and rich scientific life in the field of chemical physics which spanned half-century. An interesting aspect of the author's academic career is that he started his research activity in the field of molecular spectroscopy but in order to interpret the complex experimental results he gradually expanded his interests toward theory. During the 1930s, soon after the discovery of quantum mechanics, several physicists and chemists started to apply quantum mechanics to the study of molecules: Mulliken in America and Friedrich Hund in Germany developed MO theory while Walter Heitler and Fritz London in Europe and John Slater and Linus Pauling in USA developed the valence bond (VB) method. In 1966 Mulliken received the Nobel prize in Chemistry for the development of MO theory and his fundamental work on the electronic structure of molecules (for an overview of Mulliken's research see the book: Selected Papers of Robert S. Mulliken, 1975). Unfortunately Hund did not receive the coveted prize but Mulliken stated that he would have been glad sharing it with him. The book contains many details about spectroscopic and theoretical studies performed on specific molecules (Mulliken's favorite molecule was molecular nitrogen, N2) as well as the names of Professor Mulliken's collaborators and visitors at The University of Chicago. The book ends with the list of Mulliken's publications and a timeline of all the important events surrounding the life of this great scientist.
