Great little book and informative i am happy that i bought this gives a good overall history of the penal system i used to be an office in a medium security prison and found it was wondering about how the penal system started and things and found it very interesting. also had great service i received the book fast i highly recommend this book its informative and interesting!

It was very useful in tracing the judicial system from origins to current system of incarceration shows the need for more focus on prevention of crime and entrance to Judicial system.

I found this book while doing some research on approaches to punishment in colonial America. In this book, I found several examples that I had never heard of before, making me think that the book is a pretty thorough treatment. I think it's an informative read for anyone interested in the crazy things we do to each other in the name of justice and punishment.

Mainly I am writing this review because I want to thank Neal Unger for being who he is. I first came across him on YouTube and found him so inspiring. It means a lot to me to see someone who's older, but who is resilient, has a sense of fun, and still knows how to play. I am forty two, work a desk job, and was at a point where I was feeling sick physically and spiritually. Life is not meant to be constantly repeating the same boring tasks, life is meant to be danced with and enjoyed. We need to become like children and remember how to play again. I used to skate a lot when I was in my teens and well into my twenties, but quit when I thought I was 'too old' for it. After watching Neal having fun on YouTube and reading his book, I am gonna start skating again. I just landed a kickflip on my back patio, so I know the muscle memory is still there. Neal, thank you so much for being who you are! I am so inspired by you...you are a beautiful human being. Thank you so much!

What can I said but charming. I purchased several of these and they never let you down.

All Strega Nonna stories appeal to the magic so appreciated by children. She's nurturing, has a magic pasta pot(which my Italian grandmother surely had), and she can heal all hurts, physical and emotional. She also manages to teach an Aesop-like lesson in each story. All kids should have a Strega Nonna; I did; and I hope my lovely grandchildren have. In fact, they have two of them.

I love all the hidden magic and lore in the Strega Nona books, my daughter was 5 when she started reading them and now at 7 she still loves them just as much as ever!

My son loves these books!

Can't wait to share this with my little nieces - to teach them the Italian holiday traditions. Lovely illustrations too.

Good enough. It is as advertised, I have no problems with it.

This is a great paperback version of the dictionary. It's a bit thick, but the weight is fine and easy to keep with you. It's also updated, has great explanatory notes, pronunciation page, the periodic table and metric/measurement system. In addition it has a section of foreign words, biography and geography - common names of people and places. It is a great source and I highly recommend this product! You will not be disappointed!

In the age of the Internet, one may question - "why is a dictionary even necessary when you have Google or Dictionary.com"? The answer - it's because homework and Scrabble still exist. I purchased the Merriam-Webster Dictionary primarily for the kids to use in our house, but I find myself flipping through it from time to time to help define some obscure words I find in a random novel or two. The dictionary is as straight forward as it gets - definitions are simple and to the point, and there are no example sentences that the word is used in.The paper of the dictionary is the same thickness of most paperback books - it's not Bible thin, but it's not heavy duty paper either. The font is teeny tiny - I'm guessing 10 pt - but if you can read most magazine fonts, you're should be okay. I didn't find the font to be any smaller than the font in my issues of Family Circle or Better Homes and Gardens, but it definitely seemed more compressed since this is a dictionary with little white space and no pictures. Overall, great resource if you're looking for a good updated dictionary.

This is a great compact dictionary. I had a 25-year old American Heritage dictionary that finally fell apart into three pieces. This new dictionary is just perfect. I love to work crossword puzzles and looked up three obscure words to test it out. All three where in this dictionary, they were not in the old dictionary that I put in the recycle bin. I also like it because a larger, darker font is used for the word that is listed.The few complaints regarding the small print seem rather trivial to me. I use reading glasses and am able to read it just fine. I have also purchased reading glasses with a little higher power than I normally use for just those needs. It was long past time that I updated my dictionary and I'm glad I got this one. Now I have one for another 25 years.

Disappointed that this dictionary does not have etymological roots, which is what I was looking for. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a big variety of paper-format dictionaries available, so I bought this popular one thinking it would include roots. It's a fine dictionary for common word usage, and definitions are very brief.

PERFECT for our needs, haha, which beyond the usual we have a dry erase board in the bathroom and have a constant game of zombie hangman going between my husband and myself. At times we need to look up the word we place for the other to make sure are spelling it right and its usage. Haha, yeah so not the normal use for a dictionary. We had an old one that was too big to store on the little shelf and not as extensive so there were a lot of words we had to look up online. Then we had a little pocket like version that was old and too musty and falling apart. So in steps this one and the price was great and it's a nice thick but compact extensive dictionary, love it!

This is a tiny dictionary, about 4.5 inches by 7 inches. My Dad could not read the print. I did not see anything in the description noting this and wish I had read the reviews first. I am returning this book as it is pretty much useless in this format. Quite honestly, I would not want to look things up in this. I even bought the library bound, thinking of the dictionaries found in libraries.

I have several of Mr. Pogue's "Missing Manual" books. They ALWAYS are the best on the market. His books always have a great troubleshooting section. He has a way of writing that simplifies any problems that you might encounter.without making you feel like any idiot. Plus, this book is huge. I can't imagine not being able to find the answer to any question that you might have. Love this author!

I was pleasantly surprised. I read the NYT regularly and Pogue's initial response to Windows 8 was VERY negative. Reading this book I feel that he is somewhere between respect and like.I bought and read several of the books in direct competition with this. No one book has everything you want (or need) but I find that I invariably go to the "Missing Manual" before any of the others when I'm trying to answer a particular question that I have.

The book is well laid out and relative easy to find what you are looking for. Has lots of neat behind the doors tricks, but also has some misinformation. A example is it states Microsoft will charge a hundred dollars for help if your system came installed on the computer, further stating that you must call the computer manufacture. The company that built mine ( H.P. ) won't even discuss operating system issues. Have called Microsoft several times and no charge was mentioned, and were very courteous and helpful. Overall the book is very helpful and would buy it again, is done in very non techy terms and easy to understand. Well worth the money!

Before my new Windows 8 computer arrived, I used Amazon reviews to choose which Win 8 manuals I would check out from the library. This was one of the books that I then used to familiarize myself with Win 8 before my computer arrived and also to decide which book to buy for ongoing reference. Because it offered the most depth of content and its explanations were very clearly written, I decided to purchase this manual as a Kindle e-book to use in Kindle for PC. As a plus, the e-book has color illustrations while the paperback's illustrations (screen views) are only in in black and white.In the Kindle app I am using both the book's links in the table of contents and index and also notes that I add to make the book a quick reference. Nothing that Microsoft offers (only on-line) will ever match this usability.Thus far, I have found one significant error in the book, particularly significant to me because it reduces its value as a quick reference. Appendix D includes nice listings of shortcuts. Unfortunately, the Kindle version of the Appendix displays some of the lists in regular font and some with very small font i.e. only readable if I enlarge the Kindle's display font. The change font works but then the lists that were presented correctly become far too large and the whole idea of quick reference for shortcuts is destroyed. I have written to the book's contact e-mail to report the problem. I hope the Amazon Kindle team reads this comment and works with the author/publisher to fix it (and issue the fix to buyers). I hope that fix is not just made available to buyers of the upcoming Win 8.1 version.I describe myself as an intermediate-level PC user. For instance, I just converted a home XP Windows PC to a Windows 8 PC without prior Win 8 use nor technical help from anything but this book (and to some degree, reading parts of other manuals I got at the library). While the explanations in this book's explanations are very clearly written, I expect that its depth would overwhelm people who are less comfortable, technically-speaking. It would be a good reference in a home/group with a people mix of tech expertise, so that the more techy can use it to help the less techy.

Pogue's books are great. They're easier to understand than other books yet technical enough to teach you things you might not know about Windows 8. It's too bad they don't come out the same time as the OS does but that's what makes them so good. They're time tested.

Like all of the other Missing Manual books I own, this one is very useful. I'm pretty capable with computers and spent some time with Windows 8 "winging it". Well, winging it didn't work out well for me at all. I kept going back to my Win 8 computer only to leave aggravated and checking the release date of this book. I finally stopped using it until I got the book. I didn't know that Win 8 is just and overlay with Win 7 running behind it until I read the Missing Manual. And, after all of the reading...it just made it even more clear that Microsoft needs to fix it.So, while I wait for Win 8.1, I'm really hoping that Mr. Pogue has some way of offering a discounted price for the Missing Manual 8.1 for folks, like myself, who already purchased the original book.

I consult this massive book almost every other day. It is packed with more information you can imagine about Windows 8, an operating system with a great number of improvements over previous Windows OS efforts--hence a lot of things you have to learn if you want to take advantage of them. Author David Pogue does a great job of fulfilling his promise to provide Windows 8's "missing manual." His writing is lucid and backed up with lots of good graphics and sidebars to support your quest to learn Windows 8. It has been a huge help to me and I mean that literally because this book of over 900 pages is heavy. I tried reading it (actually bench pressing it) in bed and hoping it wouldn't crush me when my biceps and triceps failed. It's now on my desk next to my computer where it belongs. If you need to find out more about Windows 8 buy Mr. Pogue's "missing manual." He even supports it online where you'll find even more information and updates. It's readable, understandable, but only just barely portable.

Wow, excellent book. Anyone experiencing this will find the misogynistic relationship described in such perfect detail you may feel that the author followed you around and described your life. Finally, someone who understands - completely. It is a real eye opener as she describes the dynamics of how a woman gets herself involved in this kind of relationship. How and why the husband acts the way he does and how he uses Christianity to justify his behaviors. It is an ugly truth and, unfortunately, does not leave much hope for healing the deep wounds of the misogynist. But there is great hope and validation to be found there - definitely worth the read if you or someone you care about may be experiencing this.

This book was written in the 1990s, but it is relevant today, because relationships between men and women do not change. This author is honest, and she gives good advice for readers on how to manage this difficult relationship. I wish I could have chosen a 4 1/2 stars rating, though, because the book is so dense, I wish it offered a workbook, so the reader could digest the information more slowly, and have exercises to work on for the techniques listed. You really cannot read this book once and be done with it, but you have to apply the ideas over time, work with a counselor, and the re-read it, always with God in mind and the Bible to lead you.

this was recommended to me by a Christian therapist many years ago. What a blessing. I have probably bought 20 copies and given them away. My self-esteem and guilt soared with this book. I recommend it to anyone who has been in any type of abusive relationship

All church leader should avail themselves of this book. Domestic violence lurks even in Christian communities and for the most part, church leaders have no way of tackling the issue. The information provided in this book is all encompassing and from a Biblical perspective, highlighting both the husband and the wife's issues. It is written in layman's language which makes this information accessible to all.

This is a book that all women from abusive "Christian" homes need to read. It was eye opening and it helped me to know that I was not alone.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I bet I have read it ten times and I'm still reeling from the insightfulness of it. If you are married to a man--or in the process of separation or divorce from one--who thinks women are sex objects, baby machines, and irrational ditzes, given to men by God to slave for the men and "submit" to their abuse, AND HE CLAIMS TO BE A CHRISTIAN, get this book!!!This book has a wealth of stories about real couples with whom Dr. Rinck has interacted, that you will really be able to relate to if you are married to a cold, emotionless (except for lust and rage) "Christian" male chauvinist. Dr. Rinck also does a good job of separating the controversies about biblical interpretation on male and female roles from the grim reality of domestic abuse among Christians, on which everyone should be able to agree.When I read this book, it gave me the strength to continue with my divorce and not go back to a nightmarish marriage. I was given enough insight to see through my husband's fog machine of religious verbiage about "forgiving" and "starting over in Christ" for the manipulation that it was. And all of the nights of crying into my pillow, wondering whether I was losing my mind and feeling guilty because my "loving Christian" husband kept viciously turning on me for no reason, suddenly made sense.What can I say? I was blind, but now I see. And I have this author to thank for it.

This book is absolutely a must read for any person in a leadership position in a Church. More people in the Church need to be aware of this pattern of abuse, and provide a safe harbor for women seeking help. I was not only terrified of my husband, I was judged and criticized by the very people that should have helped me. I had no voice to speak up. This book encouraged me to find my voice and make a better life for myself. I have shared this book with others and have seen the powerful difference it has made in their lives, both men and women. This is not about men-bashing or blaming men. It is about both men and women breaking the cycle of blame and shame. It is about being treated with dignity and respect. Thank you Dr. Rinck for being the voice of the abused and providing a tool for recovery.
