The book discusses different Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, podcasts, and wikis on a very user friendly and informative level. This allows for the educator to learn about these tools and the way they can be utilized in the classroom and the effect it can have on student learning in the classroom.Hendron discusses his own experiences in Gochland County, Virginia and their policy that requires all teachers to maintain a blog. His arguments presented both for and against this idea are interesting and have great implications in the educational field. At the very least, the topic of requiring teachers to keep a blog (once developed as a way for people to personally connect and share their own thoughts, ideas, and opinions) opens up discussions of the way technology has integrated itself in classrooms and school districts.The book has a lot of great up to date information that allows educators to connect to students. For example, using iTunes to subscribe to podcasts or utilizing Audacity. Hendron gives the reader a wealth of information and sites to visit in order to effectively use Web 2.0 tools and often accompanies this information with screen shots of the site so the reader can become familiar with the site and its features. His step by step directions of sites prove to be incredibly useful and gives the reader great resources.With the information that is on the Web, Hendron offers the reader ways to minimize search time of information and maximize the information available. Tagging or using sites such as del.icio.us are effective ways to find information that Hendron mentions.With a lot of great, up to date information, the older 2006 publication date sometimes does show. In Hendron’s mention of Myspace and his lack of more popular social media outlets such as Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, the date of publication is more evident. However, Hendron shares a lot of great lesson ideas complete with grade levels, content area, standards, objectives, resources, procedures, and assessments. For an educator who is just beginning their technological journey or those who are looking to mix in different aspects of technology, these lessons are great resources.Overall, this book was a nice read. It was written with the educator in mind and how to develop some of the more popular Web 2.0 tools. This is worth a read to any educator looking to either learn a little bit more about these tools or those who want to offer their students technology experiences in the classroom as part of the curriculum.

From its humble Web 1.0 beginnings of one-way, read-only applications on the information highway, we now have two-way, read-write RSS (Really Simple Syndication) apps and tools in a new revolutionary freeway of innovations of computer commuters networked by information using blogs, podcasts, newsfeeds, and wikis. Teachers can quickly make progress by using the recommended websites to start blog accounts, wikis, etc. A brief range of the most popular and powerful technologies are presented for the consumer to choose from depending on his/her situation. Whether it is blogs, wikis, podcasts, VoIP, or newsfeeds, the author usually surveys the most effective tools, always giving attention to both platforms, whether it is PC or Macintosh. His only weakness is his unhidden bias for Macs. However, the detail of his interaction with the technology is fair. His treatment of these is up-to-date and current. In relation to Wikis, John gives helpful examples of using wikis for department meetings, notes, minutes, and even curriculum development. Here is where the "Ah Haa" moments echo where he provides specific uses of wikis from his own educational experience. The technology of Web 2.0 is not confined to the classroom, but transcended by things like videoconferencing, and also usable in teacher business as well as district business. The lessons were replete with collaborative ideas using engaging technology. The only criticism is that the lesson plans did not include a single math lesson. This reviewer is a secondary math teacher. In the final analysis, the esoteric technical title of the book is actually a rich and readable ride into the revolutionary Web 2.0 technology of not the future, but the present. It's explained clearly across both platforms and surveyed across the most popular tools. This is an excellent primer on information travel for Web 2.0.

This novel turned out to be a very very good read. It tells the true story of a young American who becomes a member of Sayeret Duvdevan after movingto Israel from the United States. His mother remarries a Hollywood executive. Their new home is in Beverly Hills,California. Aaron turns into adiscipline problem. His mother sends him to a military school in Canada. The name of this academy is Robert Land Academy. At this academy he comes under the influence of Colonel Bowman. Colonel Bowman teaches him the superior training and abilities of the Israeli Defense Forces(IDF). Aaron makesthe decision to move to Israel and become a citizen. He promptly joins the Israeli Defense Forces(IDF). After gaining combat experience and living on a kibbutz he decides to try out for the Israeli Special Forces. He is selected as a member of Sayeret Duvdevan. This is the Israeli equivelent of theNavy Seals and Green Berets. This turns out to be an experience. They conduct battles with Hamas and do operations against money raisers and financierswho fund the operations of terrorist organizations. They are able to capture a prominent Hamas member named Abu Jihad. Aaron finally reaches the pointwhere he can retire. Aaron moves back to California and opens his own security firm named IMS. This is a very good book. You should read this.

I was very pleasantly surprised. The book is divided (in my mind) into 4 sections. The first is how he wound up in the Israeli Army. I thought his story rang true. The second part was his training for the Elite Unit and how he made sure he got there. Again -- i thought told brilliantly without arrogance and with much introspection. The fourth part was his actual service. The fourth part is post army. He explains in vivid detail the rigors of the training and the challenges a soldier faces -- both physically and psychologically. This wasnt Green Beret stuff....he talks about the dangers the soldiers face and the loneliness of being in such a unit. Really great.

When I came to the question of how many stars, I hit the 5 stars withouth even thinking about it! I didn't have too. I read the entire 274 page book in 2 days! Written in a way to be easily read and understood, I couldn't put it down. The glimphs into the authors childhood, military school in Canada, and the incredible training he endured, that in my experience of 30 years of reading of military history to include the SAS, SEAL's, Green Beret, and others, the Israeli special forces I believe go thru worse, and endure more than any other! (For one reason, some their treatment in special forces training would be illegal)!They have to, due to being on a war footing at all times. Then, to the missions in "enemy territory," to snatch suspected terrorists, makes for incredible suspense! I would highly recommend this book to anyone, as a must read!

At times it seems the author reveals too much about operations of Israeli special forces and CT units, but in the end, not really. Quickly, it can be seen why the Israelis are the best fighting force in the world.The most interesting part of the book is at the very end when the author talks about his current career. It's amazing to see that even after 9/11, we are still reactive, instead of proactive, when it comes to security. What is really frightening, especially to anyone connected with our school systems no matter what the grade or year, is the total lack of preparedness and training which exists to deal with "school shooters." The fanatical opposition, mostly by teacher unions and administrators, to the presence of properly trained, and armed, security personnel in schools and the reliance on improperly trained, and remote, public safety forces should give pause to anyone who attends a school in this country or who sends a family member off to school.

This is a superior book written by a semi silver spoon Beverly Hills kid who dreams of making a difference and honoring his Jewish roots by going to Israel to participate in the elite special forces in what stands today as any country's most advanced and successful anti-terrorism elite special forces with methods and practices that if applied to the United States special forces would enhance our security abroad and right here at home.A compelling story of a young kid who has little idea of what he is about to get himself into, but ending up with a life that most would consider both very fulfilling and so very honorable by all defense and military buffs! A book that is hard to stop listening to and each time you do break, you look forward to the next time you will get to listen to more.I recommend this book highly for all readers who have an interest, however, be advised that as with most military books, at times there is harsh language so definitely PG-13+ rating. Not overly violent but very candid about the difficulties in the geopolitics and the physical and mental strain one undergoes when training for special forces, much like our Seal teams or England's MI6. A book I am happy to have in my library and to have experienced! Get this book!

I bought this book along with David Einhorn's ( Fooling Some of the People All of the Time, A Long Short (and Now Complete) Story, Updated with New Epilogue ) which is very similar in the storyline and end result.I thought this book was presented much better and I found myself more immersed in it than with Einhorn's. I was fighting to get through Einhorn's book, while I found myself wanting to read more of this one.All that being said, what Ackman did was tremendous - truly a David vs. Goliath task. However, as much respect as I have for Ackman and what he did and accomplished - as I read the book, I found myself questioning "Did Ackman simply uncover what was going on and made money being right"? or "Did Ackman actually cause the series of events to take place which caused the collapse of MBIA and other insurers after years of pitching his story"? It's sort of the same kind of thing that Dick Fuld brings up when discussing Lehman and Hank Greenberg discussing AIG...would the events which took place and the ultimate demise have happened on their own had short sellers and some of the nefarious actors not done what they did? Or would business have just continued as it always had? Though each of the companies did have problems, I'm not so sure that they would not have been able to muddle through...I believe it was with the added pressure applied by folks like Ackman and Einhorn that undermined public confidence in these companies that ultimately threw them into turmoil. Of course the financial crisis threw gasoline into the fire, but again, had public confidence not been undermined, perhaps they would have been able to raise additional money, righted their ships, and continued? The fact that MBIA is still in business today makes you really ask these questions. How could MBIA still be in business if what they were offering provided no benefit to the purchasers of municipal bond insurance and was simply added cost to taxpayers? Is there business really so different today?Today, MBIA does $1B in revenues while carrying $9B in debt - however, they are posting decent/strong earnings - $1.81/share over trailing 12 months with a stock price at $6.00. Ackman called for MBIA to go to bankruptcy, and it still has not happened...even after everything which has taken place.

This book came out in late April, and the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Financial Times have all ignored it.The lack of attention is a shame, because it's an amazing, amazing book.Hedge fund manager William Ackman gave author Christine Richard impressive access. She writes, "Ackman gave me a CD-ROM containing every e-mail he had written or received that mentioned MBIA as well as years of appointment calendars and access to an office filled with more than 40 boxes of documents he'd collected in researching MBIA. He encouraged colleagues, advisers, and friends to talk with me and spent hours answering my questions."The result is a fast-paced, behind-the-scenes look at how a "short" investor uses the press, stock analysts, and the government to beat down the price of a stock he has bet against.Mr. Ackman's campaign that is at the heart of this book is his war against Municipal Bond Insurance Association, or MBIA.Here the key journalist seems not to have been anyone at the New York Times, or even Ms. Richard, who worked for Dow Jones and Bloomberg. No, it was "Marty Peretz, the editor-in-chief of the New Republic magazine, who had been Ackman's thesis adviser when he was an undergraduate at Harvard."Mr. Peretz, reports Ms. Richard became the first investor in Mr. Ackman's hedge fund after Mr. Ackman "drove from Boston to Peretz's summer house on Cape Cod to pitch him the idea." (Mr. Peretz tells me the investment was $500,000, made at the time and not subsequently increased.)By Ms. Richard's account, Mr. Peretz wasn't exactly what you'd call a passive investor. After the SEC didn't really follow up on a meeting in which Mr. Ackman aired his allegations about MBIA to SEC staff, Mr. Peretz wrote in July 2004 to the chairman of the SEC, William Donaldson, "with whom he was friendly." Reports Ms. Richard, "Peretz's appeal stirred a response at the SEC, which asked Ackman to return to Washington."If the SEC did not act against MBIA, Mr. Ackman would try another regulator, the attorney general of New York, Eliot Spitzer. Ms. Richard reports that in January or February 2005: "Ackman, along with Marty Peretz, and Eliot Spitzer were huddled around a small table in the attorney general's office, eating pressed turkey sandwiches. Peretz had arranged the lunch meeting. Ackman wanted to point Spitzer toward the important issues at MBIA."If Mr. Spitzer and the SEC both did not act, there was always the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Barney Frank. The book recounts Mr. Ackman and his lawyer flying to Boston on June 5, 2007 for a meeting with Congressman Frank, with whom they visited only after they "picked up Marty Peretz, who knew Frank from their student days at Harvard." Mr. Frank agreed to hold hearings on MBIA.There's plenty of other rich detail here. The broker who gave Mr. Ackman the idea to short MBIA worked for, of all places, Lehman Brothers.The dependent relationships among short-sellers, regulators, and the press are illuminated for all to see. At one point, Mr. Ackman asks an SEC official what it would take to get the agency to act. The SEC official's reply? "A story on the front page of the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times, especially the New York Times."What to make of the whole episode? Well, it's certainly a newsworthy tale, and not only for those interested in hedge funds or short-selling. One MBIA vehicle named something like Latin for "black hole," Ms. Richard reports, "owned liens on 11,000 properties in Pittsburgh, nearly 10 percent of the entire city."As an investment idea, shorting MBIA was a big success. The shares lost more than 80% of their value. "Pershing Square investors made about $1.1 billion," Ms. Richard reports. About $140 million of that was Mr. Ackman's personally, though, Ms. Richard reports, he has pledged the entire amount to charity.Those troubled by Mr. Ackman's use of the regulators to press his position at least have to concede that MBIA and its allies also used the regulators to press their own case against Mr. Ackman, subjecting him to SEC and New York attorney general inquiries that were eventually dropped.While Ms. Richard's book is finished, the story isn't over. Some value investors are now placing bets on an MBIA recovery. And short-sellers are circling the for-profit education industry using the same strategy of press and regulatory pressure that was deployed so successfully against both Farmer Mac and MBIA.

This book covers the algebra and calculus used in economics very well. It applies the maths to the economic theories and ideas as you learn or review them. However, there is not any coverage of the maths that are at the heart of economic research: Probability, statistics, nor econometrics. Even without those important topics covered this book will be my go-to-book when I need to refresh my algebra and calculus. If you're an economics student you should consider buying this book.Even though I bought this book to have a reference for statistics and probability, it still warrants 5 stars. I would suggest using the "Look Inside" feature and look at the index to see if it covers the topic(s) you are looking for. Although, had I done that, I might not have purchased it. For the price, I paid about $30, it's a great ALGEBRA AND CALCULUS book.

By far the best Math textbook I've seen, by a considerable margin. Geoff Renshaw leaves aside the arrogance and assumptions of previous knowledge associated with many mathematics texts and delivers a clean, fresh perspective right from scratch. However uncomfortable you may be with any level of maths, this book will help clear the most fundamental of your doubts and establish a strong foundation to continue your studies in maths and/or economics.There are several excellent points about this book:1. Fabulous book. I just gave copies to my sons, 14 and 18, and I'm convinced it's the only sex education book they will need from now well into their 20s.I gave each of them a copy along with this note:"Mom and I are giving you this book, and the notes here, so that you have a great source of factual information about sex and relationships all in one place."We know you have had quite a bit of "sex ed" already at school, but there is always more to learn, and after looking around, we think this is one of the best resources. It goes well beyond what school teaching offers, and does a better job than I could even in hours of conversation. It's not easy for parents to talk to kids about sex, so this book at least gets the right information out to you and then opens the door for questions and discussion, whenever you want. I have been married once before and was in various other relationships, so I know a lot about this stuff and I want you to know I am totally open to questions and discussion, any time."Mom and I like this book because it's really straightforward and very complete, and also free of any judgmental or moralistic viewpoints. Mom and I both think that's the best approach. You have both been raised to be good and moral persons, so you will use your own "gut" (and advice from us, whenever you want it), to choose what you think is right for yourself and the people close to you."Giving you this book is not a substitute for talking about these issues whenever we want or need to. In the meantime, here are some tips on sections that we think you should definitely read ..."From there I went on to highlight the "must read" sections (safe sex, contraception, consent, etc) and told them we would talk about these.It's a great book and offers comprehensive information in a matter-of-fact, adult manner and in a format that's easy to flip through to find what you're looking for.

This book is a great tool for parents to give to their teenagers! As a teen my mom gave me a couple books but they mainly covered the medical aspects of sex and since it was the late 70's/80's they were very focused on women and heterosexual sex. The sex readiness checklist is an excellent way to let young adults know what things they should think about before they become sexually active. S.E.X. covers the biological factors involved but the social, emotional and economic factors too like do you have enough money saved to cover medical expenses (e.g. annual exams, birth control, etc.). It was nice to see a discuss of same sex relationships and the insightful discussion of virginity in this context which can help heterosexual teens/parents have better discussion about the different types of sexual encounters beyond full intercourse.My daughter and I actually had three books out during a discussion about sex and birth control and we ended up always looking at this book because it was much better than the others.The one thing this book had a BIG miss on was on the topic of Sexting. It had one paragraph describing it but no mention of the legal and social dangers and risks of sending videos and photos via SMS/email. This is a big deal in the area we live in with 12 teenage boys recently being arrested for distributing photos. Would have liked to see more information about this to warn kids about potential concerns.

I absolutely LOVE this book and cannot recommend it enough. As a college professor who teaches human sexuality, I have come across a lot of sex ed books, and this one is the best book that targets high school and college students, in my opinion: it is full of accurate facts, it's engaging, and it is written it a tone that works for this age group (e.g., it isn't old-fashioned but also doesn't try to be too hip, which can backfire and be a turn-off). I not only use it as a textbook for my First Year Seminar college class (students love it, and it's cheaper than a traditional text book), but I also bought it for my high school-aged daughter to read whenever she is ready. My favorite chapter is one called "To be...or not to be...sexually active". It has a long, detailed checklist for people considering being sexually active that is very thoughtful (heck, it's so detailed about all the things to consider that I wondered if *I* was ready to be sexually active, and I've been married for 10 years!! :-). My wife is a therapist and she often gives the chapter to her clients this age who are considering becoming sexually active. The book also covers so many important issues (not just pregnancy and contraception but relationships, emotions, gender and sexual orientation issues, abuse, rape, prostitution, you name it). I highly recommend it for parents of teens and/or college students and their kids.

This should be given to every teenager. I wish I could give it 10 stars. It's a great book that covers a variety of topics in meaningful ways. It's not super heteronormative like most sex ed books - it's inclusive and non-shaming. I buy all my kids one of these books when they are about 14-15ish. Some of the chapters address more mature issues, but really, if you think your kids aren't already wise to most of it, you're mistaken. Cute book but written by a man for a man. My search was gifts for women over 50 gifts. 90% of the content are directed to men. VERY disappointed. This could have been worded differently on many items to address men and women OR separate sections for men and then for women.

This book was published in 1998. 20 years ago. No longer relevant for current 50 year olds. This should have been pulled from selling at least 10 years ago. Very disappointed!!! Bad Amazon.

Much more for a man than a women. Ok but not the greatest.
