I received the book with pages ripped from the thread. Half the pages in this book are ripped from the bonding. However, the book is still readable.

I bought this book to study for my MFT exam in California and the information was relevant, and i succesfully passed the exam!

Good book and in good condition.

I work in a state mental hospital and I found this book to be a little on the basic side. Also its a little old so things like HIPAA are not covered because this was written before that was implemented. Despite that this is a nice basic guide for clinicians just starting out in the mental health field or a state mental hospital

He thought it was cool enough to want to show his mom everything he did (thanks for making me cool again). He's good with computers and he's a smart kid. That being said, he didn't think that book was "dummy-downed" or too over his head.

Our Grandson loved this as well as his father. For an 11 year old it is spot on and very age appropriate.

I got this for my son, and he is starting the book now. If it keeps his attention, I will raise my rating to five stars.

I have just set up a 45 gallon aquarium, and I followed this book as I went along - I now have a beautiful aquarium, with healthy fish! I have tried the aquarium hobby in the past, but never successful as this this. If you are a beginner, this is the book to buy. Here's why: very clear instructions and explanations, without over-doing the science speech, and yet remains comprehensive. There are beautiful full color photos with each step of the set-up. For one example, I bought a piece of bogwood from a local fish dealer, they did not tell me to soak the wood first. But I followed the pictures and instructions in this book, and I ended up with a beautiful piece of bogwood/aquascape that did not turn my aquarium water brown. Beautiful! I do have other books for beginning a tropical aquarium, but this is the one I only really needed. I absolutely love the photos of each step. The author explains something, and there's a full color photo to illustrate it. This reference book provides a sequence of events from beginning to build your aquarium with the end result of producing and maintaining an attractive and healthy tank environment for the fish you put in it. It is abundant with pictures. It discusses many species of fish and lets you know which can get along together in your community tank. It explains how to be creative in building your aquarium with wood, rocks and plants. There are also sections on plants, filtration options, lighting and cleaning. It is a wonderful book for anyone who takes their hobby seriously. It is very informative and provides a wealth of information. It is not difficult to review this book; it is wonderful. It covers so many areas that it is impractical to list them all here. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to take the time to create a unique tropical aquarium and learn alot in the process.

Although the book is several years old, the content was up to date enough, and well rounded in all the aspects of setting up an aquarium, from an excellent explanation of cycling, complete with easy to understand charts and time tables, to grooming live plants and adding fish in three different time frames so the water chemistry could keep up. The photos are abundant and clearly show what the author is writing about. There are sections with photos on many common aquarium plants for background, center and foreground. The fish section is replete with names,area of tank that each prefer, numbers of fish for schooling properly,hints on food preferences and beautiful pictures. There is much, much more but I will tell you that I bought five books on setting up and caring for an aquarium , and this is the one I have just about worn out, bookmarking, underlining and turning to again and again.

This is a great book covering everything one needs to know about setting up and maintaining a tropical aquarium. Excellent illustrations and easy to follow step by step instructions starting day one right on through twelve weeks week to week. I highly recommend this book for those thinking about starting an aquarium, those who have just started, and those who have been doing so for less than two years. It really does cover all the bases.

After a ten year break I decided to get back into aquarium keeping. I knew the basics but I was a little rusty on all the details. This book was a perfect refresher course on all of the intricacies of keeping a tropical aquarium - and I learnt a ton of new stuff too. I am setting up a 10 gallon quarantine tank (in my office) and a 29 gallon display tank (in the living room). I have followed this book page by page and a few weeks later my tanks are ready to accept fish - yes, I'm going shopping this weekend!The author covers every aspect of setting up a new tank. Filters, lighting, substrate, food, you name it - it's all here. The explanation about the critical subject of water chemistry is the best I've read anywhere. There's also a ton of info about plants if you want to get into that side of things. He then goes on to recommend the most appropriate kinds of fish for each stage in the development of your new aquarium - all great information from someone who clearly knows what he's talking about.The book itself is full color, with lots of graphs and charts to hold your interest. The photographs are excellent.So, all in all, a great reference for the beginner. Highly recommended. Glad I bought it.[And, no, I'm not the author's close friend or business associate!]

This is an amazing book that delves into the history of not only the Muslim invasions of Eastern Europe, but the Reformation, the peasant wars, the subterfuge occurring between the Vatican, Charles V, Francis I and Henry VIII and the European proclivity of all of those factions battling one another, instead of concentrating on the looming Islamic threat on Europe's eastern doorstep.

James Reston does a fantastic job in writing of this period of history. The salvation of Western Europe from the Ottoman Empire in this period of time is miraculous. The chaos which Martin Luther's revolution caused in a once unified Christian Europe is amply explained. The further split caused by Henry VIII of England is intriquing. The indecisiveness of Pope Clement VII is inexplicable. The inaction of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V to save Vienna, let alone Budapest is annoying. Reston explains the chaotic era in Europe at this juncture of history - the corruption within the Catholic Church, the proclamation of a new Holy Roman Emperor, the religious turmoil, the rise of nationalism among the multitude of European princes,the impact of the printed word, and the lack of a united front against the invasion of Eastern Europe by Suleyman, of the Ottoman Empire. As a result, it causes one to ponder the present fate of Western civilization in the twenty-first century.

Great 'flip side of the coin' to religious studies of the Reformation Era. He's too apologetic when portraying the dark side of Islam, and too hostile toward Lutheranism, but overall does a great job showing the political, military, economic, and social conflicts between East and West as manifest in the Moslem failure to take Vienna, but having much success elsewhere. He tells many fascinating stories about individuals who pop back up over and over again to shape history.

This is a wonderfully entertaining reading experience that focuses on a number of leaders at a crucial historical nexus: the protestant movement is beginning to gain force (Martin Luther and Zwingli), absolutist nation-states are replacing the more loosely controlled feudal empire (Francis 1, Henry 8, et al.), and the Turkish Empire is reaching the limits of its expansion and about to begin its decline. The great virtue of this book is that it tells it all in an enthralling story, with bits of analysis thrown in, vivid characterizations that some argue is novelistic, and an evocation of what it might have felt like to live at that time. For what it is worth, I enjoyed every single page like it was a film.While some reviewers criticize this book as not academic enough, I suppose they have a point. This is popular history par excellence, for the general reader and not the scholar. If the reader knows this and has the right expectations at the start, it is great fun. If the reader expects something more academic, they will not find it here.There were a number of developments at this time that created fundamental precedents, all inter-related. First, the northern German states were ready to exit from the yoke of the Catholic church. They were developing the means (predominantly military) to do so and found their intellectual justification in the hands of a great firebrand, Luther, who supplied them with arguments and powerful writings that spread via the movable-type press.Second, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V sees himself as the defender of the Catholic orthodoxy, underpinning as it did (via the Pope) his legitimacy as the pre-eminent secular lord of a vast feudal empire that was supposed to be spiritually united. However, he also had the task of defending all of Christiandom, which preoccupied much of his career. He also had to fight the Pope from allying himself with Francis 1.Third, in Suleyman, you have the last Turkish leader-conqueror of genuine genius. His armies were advancing into EUrope, fighting the Shiite "heresy" in Persia, expanding into Northern Africa, and developing naval dominance of the entire Mediterranean. Suleyman takes Hungry and threatens Vienna.Fourth, you have proto-nation states in Britain and France, whose kings are consolidating power in narrower borders in ways that will enable them to forge armies far stronger than the loose feudal coalitions of knights and mercenaries under the command of Charles V. The chivalric era is clearly on its way out, to be replaced by tightly disciplined armies under unified command, armed with firearms and canons for blanket-area killing rather than only swords and pikes for individual-style combat.While Charles V wanted to burn Luther at the stake, he had to allow the protestants time in order to unite Christians to repel the Turks. Once he turned his attention back to Northern Germany, it was too late to dislodge them either militarily or against their deeply engrained beliefs. Meanwhile, Henry 8 wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon (who also happened to be Charles V's niece), but faced bureaucratic delays (of special dispensation from the Pope) due to the wars over control of Italy, first by Francis 1 and later by Charles V; eventually, Henry went his own way, opening England to Protestantism in the next generation. This was context that I didn't know.Reston weaves these developments together as if in a novel. My daughter (15) picked it up and, to my delight, could not put it down. For myself, while I am familiar with much of the history already, it was a delicious re-telling of events that served as a review of things I studied long ago.Warmly recommended. Books like this make history fun, helping to spark a young mind to further inquiry in more seriously academic sources. It does end a bit abruptly, even arbitrarily, but after most of the action had set forces in motion that we feel to this day. This is a perfect snapshot in time.

This is excellent history and easy to read! Almost like a novel.Helped me to really understand this critical period of European history (1520 - 1536) when Martin Luther launched his well known split from the Catholic church. Prior to this book, I had no idea how much the Lutheran success was intertwined with Ottoman power, Charles V (Holy Roman emperor), Henry VIII, Francis I (France), and 3 Popes.Required reading for anyone who wants to understand how today's western world came to be.

These are good popular histories--fun to read, lots of facts, reasonable balance. Enormous bibliographical reading lists. I can't say that the author is entirely without bias. He seems to me very forgiving of Clement VII, and rather mocking of Martin Luther.

This is a great read for a solid history book. The decades of 1520's and 1530's when so much happened. Ottoman Empire attacking Europe and Asia, Martin Luther reforming the church, and all kinds of intrigue. Easy to follow and very well presented.

This book was fantastic. A great read with a neat point of view in comparing the Christian & Muslim leaders of the time.

We ❤️ this book! We celebrated by using foam printmaking to make Día de los Muertos designs after learning about Posada and his Catrina/other prints. The info made Posada Elem appropriate and brought up adult issues using child language and concepts. Great for Day of the Dead fun! 💀💀💀

The illustrations in Funny Bones are so whimsical, and macabre- I love it. I purchased this for my mother, a fourth grade teacher, and she is so excited to share this with her class for Cinco de Mayo. Because of the bold illustrations and cultural story line, I believe this book is versatile for many age groups. I bought this book because it was on the New York Times Best list for Illustrations in 2015.

This is a beautifully illustrated and informative book. The material is easy to understand and yet not patronizing. The fact that the illustrations are in the style of MesoAmerican artwork just makes it more endearing to me. Explaining the evolution of Posada's skill, the techniques he learned were parts of his story I had not previously known. I look forward to getting more books by Tonatiuh to share with my family in years to come.

DT's Funny Bones was a hit at our school's family literacy night. It was an informative story that was fun to read and share with students and parents alike. It seemed everyone knew about sugar skulls but nobody knew the story of the creator, Don Lupe. Great for bilingual readers at home or in school.

This book doesn't flow well and it doesn't hold kids' attention in my experience. I appreciate the history though.
