About the Author

Lillian Ross (1918–2017), born Lillian Rosovsky, grew up in Syracuse and Brooklyn, New York. In 1945, she joined The New Yorker and was a staff writer there for seven decades. She was the author of eleven books, including Portrait of Hemingway, Vertical and Horizontal, Reporting,The Player, Here But Not Here, and Reporting Back: Notes on Journalism. She spent much of her life with the journalist and editor William Shawn. Her work is considered to be a major influence in the field of literary journalism.  Angelica Hustonis an actress and director. Born in Santa Monica, California, she is the daughter of John Huston and the ballerina Enrica Soma. Huston began acting in the late 1960s, taking small roles in her father’s films, and in 1985 won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in Prizzi’s Honor. She went on to have roles in numerous films, including The Addams Family, Ever After: A Cinderella Story, and The Royal Tenenbaums. Huston’s directorial debut was Bastard Out of Carolina in 1996, followed by Agnes Browne and Riding the Bus with My Sister.

I wanted this book to be a good reference tool for the difficult matters I sometimes encounter with the Office programs I know quite well (Word, Excel and Outlook) and a good learning book (for a person already familiar with MS software) on those I'm not experienced with (Access, One Note). The book is neither. Maybe I was expecting too much for just one book on so many different programs. It's possible it is more useful for a person just being introduce to the use of several MS products for the first time (if there is such a person).My book is just like new, so I think I will maybe sell it back.

I have used the Microsoft Step by Step books for about 10 years.I let the students select the text for the software they own.Mac students can get the Mac version, students that have 2010 or 2013 can pick the book of their choice.The price is economical - and if they purchase used books - they save even more.I appreciate how easy it is to purchase from Amazon.The consistency of the text version to version makes it easy to assign flexible assignments so students learn on the systems they own/have access to.

This book is pretty good in its explanations of programs but leaves some details out on some programs. I purchased this book for a school class and I read the step-by-step instructions for each application. My instructor gave us homework assignments about each application and I was frustrated when I could not find explanations about all of the details concerning the Excel application. I still had many questions that the book did not address.

At least when I run into a problem I have a reference to go to to find the answer.

Each and every time I've tried to solve a real-time issue using this book, I end up with getting a direct or indirect referal to another MS book. Save your money and put it towards the MS books on Word, Excel, Visio, Powerpoint etc.

Really good book on learning Micosoft Office Professional 2010. Very clear and understandably written.

I hate E-books that don't have page numbers. It had no search capabilities and was not very user friendly for the classroom. My teacher even told me that she did not recommend the textbook and told us to buy another one of our choice (after I had already bought this one of course!).

Foegot my rule of "try b4 u buy." Book is definitely for students 15 & up plus dedicated adult MS persons w/time to read & practice lessons even though they are comprehensive. Not for people who want "barebones" instructions and have marathons to run.

Written by two different authors, who have totally different perspectives on rapid classifications. The runs written by the father are over classified (rapids listed as Class IV are probably Class III). The runs written by the son are sometimes slightly under classified (rapids listed as Class IV might be IV+). This means when you read a description and it lists a rapid as Class IV you have no idea what to expect. This book is extremely outdated and there are better options available.

This book is a fantastic resource with almost everything you want or need to know about the areas covered. My only criticism would be that the maps could stand more detail, and be smaller scale. Regardless, it clearly identifies the access locations for rivers, all the major rapids, and how to go through or get around them. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in paddling in the western Carolina's.

Actually now know the author and he hand carved a walking stick for my husband who does trail work in western NC

I really wanted to like this book - all the way through the very last page as I forced myself to struggle to the end through the ramblings of the, "I believe in progressive republicanism." declaration. I even agree with much of what he has to say but...So much of the book is lost in the meandering of poor research, academics, wistful nostalgia for a past he never experienced and poorly formed arguments that it was hard to buy what he's selling, even though I'm a returning customer. I found very little substance related to "soulcraft" throughout the text and frankly wished he'd spent more time sharing what he learned from the shop teachers and mentors he mentions but never fully explores. The constant switch from the dedication to craft and work in the trades as sometimes related but separate and at others equal in all ways is simply wrong and confusing. I hate to be the one to break the news but not everyone in the trades has any interest in mastery of craft or is a richer or more enlightened human from their work. The author posits that white collar work is devoid of all meaning and lacks the ability to measure self against product - which in itself is worth a whole discussion - but there many in the fields of labor that rise to excellence and personal mastery in the white collar ranks as well.In the end, craftsmanship reflects the individual commitment to mastery and excellence and that isn't recognized in this volume. Soul enriching craftsmanship isn't found in the majority of workers regardless of profession and I was disappointed to find so little in this book that resonated with me - an already convinced believer that time in my shop is healing for my soul.

I've read "Shop Class as Soulcraft" twice and have urged friends to read it, too. It's a super-interesting book, which draws on autobiography, phenomenology, and labor studies to make the argument that the manual trades are cognitively and morally superior to most white-collar "knowledge" work. Ironically, the argument is rather cerebral: the basic idea (or one of them anyway) is that manual workers are in touch with objective reality and must satisfy objective standards of excellence, whereas office workers spend much of their professional time managing perceptions of themselves. As someone who hated every hour I spent in an office drafting strategies, "talking points," and press guidance -- ephemeral performance art, at best -- the book spoke to me. (It also helped that I grew up in the SF Bay Area, like the author.)Admittedly, the book has a few problems. As other Amazon reviewers have noted, the author makes sweeping generalizations on the basis of his two brief jobs in the "knowledge" sector and his readings of Jackall and Braverman. The book also has an underbaked, incomplete feel to it, as if the author had trouble working his ideas into a full-blown argument. And here and there there's a hint of reverse snobbery, as when the author writes knowingly of race tracks and grimy machinery while never letting his audience (made up overwhelmingly of white-collar book readers) forget that he has a PhD from the University of Chicago. Perhaps this makes him the last Renaissance Man. (Perhaps he drinks Dos Equis, too.)However, the book is definitely on to something. It will stir up reflection and self-recognition in anyone who reads it seriously. I'm looking forward to the author's next work.

An ironic 2-star that could have been 5-stars. Crawford desperately needs a better editor and someone to buy him a beer and share the hard fact that his book is just more of what he spends 200 pages bitching about. Sad part, he can write. The tiny minority of those 200 pages is insightful, compelling and memorable. The rest is precisely what he did, and accurately derides, as an abstractor at Information Access Company - poorly summarize others’ work without adding value. I doubt those who gave awards or glowing reviews (New York Mag, “spine-tingling’) did more than skim and assume the mix of academic end notes and first person grease monkey narrative meant this was fresh and insightful. I hope Crawford goes back and finds the 26 good pages and takes another shot. He has something to say and the skill to say it.

I bought several of these. After reading it myself I've purchased a few copies for folks wrestling to understand why they feel a connection to performing manual labor while intellectual work sometimes leaves them feeling unfulfilled. We tend to like ourselves more when see that our work is tangible and meaningful, and we like ourselves less when the value of our work is ambiguous. Hopefully the book encourages readers to develop their own trade skills, value those skills in others and teach younger generations to do the same.This book deepened my appreciation for my dads decision to support my engineering education on the condition that I also develop myself as a tradesman.

What a great read! Mitch Rapp is truly a great hero - James Bond, John Rambo, Jason Bourne and a Marvel superhero (take your pick) all rolled into one! Of course it's a fantastic story but one never really knows. A woman CIA director getting kidnapped, let alone in the middle east, is not something that could really happen in real life but then, who knows? That is the premise of this book and it's quite compelling. Mitch Rapp is always there to provide drama and great suspense. He gets his man in the end but boy, what a joy to read.The late Vince Flynn was a great story writer, especially this genre of CIA inspired novels. I have read all his novels except one and to be honest, it's very difficult to read other writers who try to imitate his style because they can't do it. Flynn had a certain way of putting you in the middle of the action and immersing you in it. If you have watched one of the Bourne movies, it reads just like that. As you are reading the book, it unfolds like a movie. I read the book literally in one night. Stayed up until the "movie" was over.

WOW. Another page turner delivered by Vince Flynn. The Mitch Rapp series just keeps getting better and better. In "Protect and Defend", Mitch Rapp does what Mitch Rapp is best known for. He takes charge, defying all political correctness. He is one of the best "In your face, do the right thing" CIA operatives ever to be put to work defending the United States of America. His quick thinking and superb tactical mind simply solves problems. He doesn't care what any of the power people of Washington think. He could care less about laws that protect terrorists and isn't afraid of breaking them to save lives. I love his "no nonsense" approach to problem solving. Mitch takes charge of an operation that goes terribly wrong and doesn't hesitate to cut straight through all the legalities of his actions to get results that are extremely time sensitive. No matter what anyone thinks of his tactics, not one of them can say he doesn't deliver results. This is the 10th book in the chronological order of the Rapp series. It has proven to be just as exciting and fast paced as the previous novels. If your a Mitch Rapp fan then I don't have to tell you you won't be disappointed in this book.

Vince Flynn is an imaginative and prolific writer who exhibits a true genius for research. His knowledge of the inner-workings of our government and its weak-points is impressive. Equally impressive is his ability, willingness, and courage to "tell it like it is".In his series of Mitch Rapp novels, Vince Flynn grabs your attention and his face-paced story-telling style holds it in a vice-like grip. I found myself unable to put any of his novels down once I started them. Considering the fact that most of these novels run somewhere between 500 and 700 pages, this is no small feat for any author.I have read every one of the Mitch Rapp novels and believe me when I say that there is not a bad apple on that tree. Each of these novels may be read as a stand-alone but you may find yourself with a better grasp of the overall flow of characters and events if you read them in proper sequence. By the way, the proper reading sequence cannot be determined by publication date alone as a couple of the Mitch Rapp novels were written (more or less) as prequels. I recommend that you read these novels in the following sequence:(1) "American Assassin"(2) "Kill Shot"(3) "Transfer of Power"(4) "The Third Option"(5) "Separation of Power"(6) "Executive Power"(7) "Memorial Day"(8) "Consent to Kill"(9) "Act of Treason"(10) "Protect and Defend"(11) "Extreme Measures"(12) "Pursuit of Honor"There is another novel ("The Survivor") in the Mitch Rapp series scheduled to begin shipping in hardback around October 8, 2013 by Simon & Schuster and it can be pre-purchased via Amazon.com.

Another great book by Flynn. This one was quite a page turner. Kennedy gets kidnapped and Rapp is after the bad guys to find her and to avenge her. Guess who wins? The setting is mostly in Iran, which is different for this series. I really enjoyed the plot line and the result (ending). I wish Flynn would have refrained from using excessive colorful language, but it does add a touch of realism.

Am reading the Mitch Rapp books in order. This one has some interesting plot twists, but several times I felt I was reading a short story with missing pieces. Also a pitfall in reading all the series is having to hash through old background that one already knows about - there was a fair amount of that but those segments one can breeze through if you want to. Anyway I would recommend it for keeping in line with the series, but just felt that it was not as good as prior books.

Excellent book a real page turner as Rapp goes after the people who messed with Kennedy and he must find her and get her back while the leader of Iran is trying to set the U.S. up and have huge confrontation between the two countries. Meanwhile Rapp is trying to figure out took Kennedy the book is action packed and will have you sucked into the action in no time at all.

I thought the book started off a bit slow but seeing that I've been reading the Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn in chronolgical order, I had to stay with it....and then, the story took off like a shot. Love these Vince Flynn novels as he goes into great detail on everything from the characters to the machinery in Washington DC. You just can't put these books down. Great reads and so easy to follow. Vince Flynn knowledge and expertise was so far ahead of the curve when he wrote these novels dealing with terrorism.

I've read all of the rapp books and this was the best.I liked the fact that Irene Kennedy was a part of the story.rPp was his usual crazy best.this time you could see his care for Kennedy.good read don't let the negatives fool you...these books aren't meant to be Pulitzer novels...just a fast paced story.
