I have been following the gluten-free version of the eczema diet for three-and-a-half years. I follow everything on the author's website. I am very diligent about drinking the vegetable juice every morning. I sprout my own mung bean sprouting-seeds so that I have a constant supply of these alkalizing sprouts like she suggests, I soak all grains overnight, etc. My meats and fish are never frozen. I eat home-made soups every day made with her veggie broth recipe. All of my food is organic. I only eat the low-in-natural-chemical foods on her food charts. The diet by itself did nothing to improve my eczema. But now that I've been on her supplements for 24 consecutive weeks in addition to strictly following the diet, I am seeing fair progress, but I still must use topical steroids twice per day for three weeks and then take 7-10 days off, Eucrisa on my face every day, and Eucrisa on my body on days that I don't use steroids -- or else my eczema will spread over much of my body.I got eczema at age 56 (four years ago). I've had numerous biopsies that confirm I have eczema dermatitis. For over three years, while I was following this author's diet, dermatologists were telling me that my eczema is so wide-spread and severe that I need to be on Dupixent + other meds like Eucrisa and steroid ointment, but - even though it made the dermatologists angry -- I refused (and still refuse) to take drugs like DuPixent.I have tried not to use topical steroids more than twice per week while following this diet and taking her supplements, but the diet and supplements are not effective enough to cut back on medicines that much.I moisturize frequently with Vanicream, which works great. (I tried allergy shots for environmental allergies for 10 months, but it just made me worse.)This book in comparison to her previous eczema diet book has a slightly different food chart and some altered recipes. The addition of saffron tea is good and so are the directions and ideas for non-dairy milks. There are colored pictures in this book. She claims in this book that her diet will clear the skin of most eczema sufferers in 12 weeks or in one month for every year that you've had eczema. But it doesn't come close to working that well.As for her supplements-- I was getting all the calcium I need from 5 liters of non-sparkling mineral water in all of my cooking (broths, porridge, drinking) etc. but it wasn't until I began using both both Skin Friend AM and PM (calcium) for the sake of trying something more and to be in 100 percent compliance with her diet that I saw any improvement with the eczema. . (One complaint that I have is that If you write a review of her supplements on her website, if it's less than 4 stars it doesn't remain posted, so the reviews are misleading. Her Skin Friend supplement is good, but not as good as her website leads people to believe.)She is against all herbal teas including oolong tea, which according to a Japanese dermatological study actually has helped many people reduce the severity of their eczema. But I comply with her diet by not drinking oolong tea anymore. I only tried oolong tea for four months about 2 years ago, which neither helped nor hurt my eczema -- but I gave it up anyway to comply with her low salicylate diet. The diet + supplements helps a little, so I keep on doing the eczema diet/detox. Hopefully, the addition of her supplements over a longer time will make this diet work better for me than it has so far. But so far, while this diet is worthwhile because at least it helps a little bit, it does not appear to be a solution to significantly improving eczema through diet and supplements alone. Topical medicines are still necessary for some sort of control of eczema while following the author's suggestions. It is delicious and healthy food though.
What Karen Fischer suggests to do with food to alleviate eczema makes a lot of sense and has helped me tremendously. I first read her book, The Eczema Diet, and this is an added bonus with even more helpful ideas. She is an organized, knowledgeable writer and she has helped me understand in a smooth progression what to do to heal my very painful, itchy eczema. I am in the process of following the food intolerance diet that she includes in this book and I am very grateful for finding this information. If you do not want to go the steroid route, but want to get to the root cause of your eczema, then this book is for you.
Because I read Karen Fischer's books, I started this eczema diet and the eczema is actually clearing up. All the doctors that I had been to said that there is no cure for eczema. They were incorrect in their assumptions...because going on this diet and finding out the foods that I was allergic to, helped me immensely. I am now 85% clear of eczema. I will stick to the guidelines of this book until I am free and clear of all eczema symptoms. This book is easy to read and the guidelines are simple and spelled out. There are very good recipes and supplement guidelines as well. The diet took some getting used to, but now that I know the recipes, I have no trouble keeping up the diet. I wasn't trying to lose weight, and because of this diet I have lost 30 pounds and I feel healthier than I have in years. Plus the eczema is all but healed.
This book has really helped heal my Eczema and psoriasis. I am doing the FID program and am testing foods currently. It's been life changing!
The book is well-written and organized. I very much like that it includes shopping lists, meal plans, and recipes. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the ingredients are impossible to find. I have been unable to locate some of the ingredients where I live. While this program may work, it takes a lot of planning, sleuthing, and the ability to eat all meals at home. I haven't been able to accomplish all of the requirements so I can't say if this will work.
Excellent!
This is the best resource I've ever found on treating and understanding eczema at the source. Karen offers an alternative and more effective solution than what most of us have been told is the only way to treat eczema -- i.e., the longterm use of steroid medications that only suppress, rather than resolve the symptoms of eczema. The recipes and explanations in this book are simple, helpful, and beautifully photographed, and diet modifications are included for those with various types of sensitivities. I'm currently using the diet protocol and Karen's SkinFriend supplements with my 2-year-old, and seeing encouraging results (even without perfect diet compliance, because let's be honest, she's 2 and has opinions about what she wants to eat). I am and will be recommending this book to everyone I know who is struggling with, or helping a child who's struggling with eczema or any other kind of skin issue. Feeling so hopeful!!
This book is amazing. It came slightly damaged, but I needed it so I didn't return it. Thanks for all of the great information about how to keep my eczema at bay.
