Awesome book. Really enjoyed the story. I recommend this book.

I loved it because it gave me insight to my family's struggles under the occupation in Lithuania.

A very important part of Lithuanian history concerns book smugglers.Just google Lithuanian book smugglers and the story is there on Wikipedia. There are also some videos on YouTube but not in English. I have watched a dramatisation which is very good but being in Lithuanian, it is clearly not accessible to all who are interested in this subject.On the other hand, a different way to learn about this and related events in Lithuania's history is to read Jura Reilly's latest book, "Sylvia's Book Smuggler".The story of Sylvia's trip to Lithuania is the device through which the reader receives all this new information.This novel also uses the literary device of a ghost who tells the story in fictional form of author Jura's great grandfather and others who were involved in the book smuggling movement at a time when use of Lithuanian language in any form of Roman alphabet text was banned. My own paternal grandfather read his first Lithuanian language books courtesy of book smugglers and became a teacher in one of many underground schools around the country.This ban on any overt or official use of our language lasted for 40 years but Lithuanians are a determined lot and the language survived despite various attempts at russification and/or polonisation to exterminate it both then and since.Many activists suffered persecution, exile and/or death but the language survived and went from strength to strength.Linguistics scholars worldwide are extremely grateful for this as the language is unique and its forms are of special interest to language researchers.Reading Jura's book in its modern fictional setting, is a pleasant and easy way to learn about this period of Lithuanian history.Although I am pretty familiar with much of the history, I learned about a couple of events of which I had been unaware.The main character, Sylvia, travels to several interesting and special places in Lithuania and the reader learns about these spots along with her through the people she meets. The ghost speaks just to her and teaches her about the smuggling that took place. By the end of the novel the events and places are inextricably linked.Author Jura cleverly weaves in little packages of history, but never in a didactic tone.I thoroughly enjoyed reading her novel, which is really a tribute not only to her great grandfather, Tomas Zickauskas-Zickus but to all those who risked their lives and those of their families when they undertook to ensure that the Lithuanian language be kept alive and accessible through the printed word."Sylvia's Book Smuggler" is a superb way to find out about this most significant period in Lithuanian history.

Barley Risotto with Fresh Mushrooms SERVES 8 You can find recipes for slow-cooker risotto made with traditional Arboriorice, but we prefer the texture of barley here. It holds up beautifully and doesn’t get gummy. Earthy mushrooms flavor the dish the whole way through, while two cheeses and fresh chives round things out at the end. 7 cups vegetable broth, store-bought or homemade, or water. 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 12 ounces fresh mushrooms, such as cremini, shiitake, or oyster, trimmed and sliced 2 shallots, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, minced Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves 2 cups pearl barley 2 ounces fresh goat cheese (about ½ cup), crumbled ½ cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano (2 ounces), plus more, shaved, for serving Snipped fresh chives, for garnish Preheat a 5-to 6-quart slow cooker. Heat 6 cups broth in a saucepan over low. Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon oil and 1 table­spoon butter in a large skillet over medium. Add half the mushrooms and sauté until tender, about 4 minutes; transfer to a bowl. Add remaining tablespoon oil and tablespoon butter, and sauté remaining mushrooms until tender, 4 minutes. Return reserved mushrooms to pan. Add shal­lots, garlic, 2 teaspoons salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper, and thyme; sauté for 2 minutes. Add barley, stir­ring to coat well. Increase heat to medium-high, add remaining cup broth, and cook, stirring to combine, until completely absorbed, about 4 minutes. Transfer barley mixture to the slow cooker. Pour in broth and stir to combine. Cover and cook on high until barley is tender but still firm, 2 to 3 hours (or on low for 5 to 6 hours). Before serving, stir in both cheeses with a fork until melted. Season with salt and pepper. Serve topped with shaved cheese and chives.

The best thing about this cookbook, next to the recipes, is the mouth watering pictures of the finished dishes. It made me want to try all of them.The recipes are good and generally easy to make. However, there are often several steps that are done before or after using the slow cooker. This has the advantage of increasing the flavor of most dishes, but also adds preparation time. It’s a trade-off.The book features useful information such as the Slow Cooker Commandments and The Basics, which are information included at the beginning of each chapter. The book contains recipes for meat, seafood, poultry, side dishes, stocks and sauces, breakfast and sweets. I found the content heavy on meat dishes. We don’t eat much meat. I would have preferred more meatless dishes. However, Spaghetti Boulognese is excellent.The chapter on sauces and stocks is very helpful. The slow cooker is an excellent device for preparing stocks. The chapter on fish was also useful. We eat a great deal of salmon. It’s easy to overcook it. However, poaching in slow cooker makes it come out perfect.I hadn’t really tried baking in a slow cooker, but the Blueberry Cornmeal Buckle turned out very well as did the Apple-Cranberry Crisp.If you enjoy slow cooker cooking, this is a very helpful book.I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

I always thought the slow cooker was for the “white trash spirit within” - This book is incredible. We designate Sunday as Slow Cooker Sunday. Martha is no joke. Her recipes are well thought out, requires some prep BUT always delicious. I can just tell Martha spent days working on each recipe. LOVE this book.

Just made my first recipe... Porchetta.... fabulous result! If anyone knows how to make the most of a slow cooker, I trust Martha Stewart. Just ordered a larger size crock pot so that I can make all of her recipes designed for a 6 quart cooker. Her techniques make all the difference. Love the book!

I had high expectations for this book. I have made 4 of the recipes and so far..... meh. Not bad but not the fine quality that I expect from Martha Stewart. Ill keep cooking my way through the book. If I start to find recipes that aee outstanding i will update this review. As of right now im disappointed.

Seller described the book perfectly. Just one minor red mark on the bottom of the book, otherwise it is perfect. As for the content of the book, all I can say is God bless Queen Martha and her team. Most of the ingredients used are household staples and not overly expensive. I love that the team tested all recipes and gives advice about the most favorable outcomes. I already made the Carbonnade, and I used a tri-tip roast. Came out beautifully. We served some salt potatoes and green beans on the side and have enough for 3 dinners.

This is a great book! While not for anyone who wants a dump and stir kind of book, this has simple recipes and amazing results. Martha nails it again!

Just received this today, and am already excited about the recipes. Most are new to me, but the Italian Braised Pork is one of my all-time favorites from one of the “Everyday Food” magazines. It’s so easy and delicious, but it only requires a few ingredients and a little bit of prep. There are at least a dozen similar recipes that I can’t wait to try!

This is not for beginners! The book contains great information about creating audio with C BUT the code rarely works since this book was released 6+ years ago. I wish there was an updated version or at least errdata page and the header files doesn't work(portf.h)I don't think I can continue with this book as NOTHING works.

First and foremost this, book is a great resource for understanding how to program audio. It is area is the severely lacking in the computing world, so every little bit helps.But there are some issues.1. If you get the Kindle version you don't get the accompanying DVD data. However, if you contact MIT Press, like I did, they are pretty good at getting you a copy of the disc for free. And you must get the DVD, there is a lot of great information on it.2. The book does start out on the right foot with an introduction to C. I think this is important because I think the bulk of people interested in this book are probably Digital Audio Production guys who are Power Users but might not have done real programming. But even if you are coming from an experienced C programmer angel I don't think it hurts. However, I believe it is important that the book starts off giving an introduction to C because it sets the tone for the book, and where the book should stand out. There are no GOOD intro to audio programming books. Most books for the audio programming are usually geared toward advanced programming or signal processing, or are so watered down the as you give a non-audio interested programer the basis to get a job done. This is a problem, because sure you can fine plenty of intro to programming books that are happy to teach you some graphics programming along the way, but never for audio. It is ambitious this book tries to take this route.3. Unfortunately, the code style doesn't skill to that newbie-to-digital-audio style.First, this is an edited anthology book and it seems that every author for every section decided to do their own coding style for each section. And not just for the code itself, but also for compiling the code [the book switches from MAKE to Scons and back and never explains why]. The problem is, as should as you understand the code from one section, you end up having to relearn everything for the next because the next author has changed the code style. I don't understand why the authors didn't try to correct for this. Plus the authors don't stick to proper code conventions. A good example of each of these problem is the change between chapter 5 to 6. The code from C to C++ without any reason, but what makes it extra annoying, is that that C++ in improperly formatted ( Example: All the headers for all the classes are in 1 file. ) It is hard to tell, if it was supposed to be poorly written C code in C++ files, or a C++ program poorly organized and written to act like C without making use of classes.Second, the code style itself, doesn't stick to simple easy to read conventions. The authors get into a bad habit of using more advanced C/C++ tricks to write less code [highly abbreviated variable names, Ternary operations instead of true If/Else code blocks]. Sure it is good for them, bad for the learner when you are trying to learn everything step-by-step [ And for you 'advance programmers' who scoff at reading someone complaining about those things, remember you were a newbie once too] You should NEVER write optimized code in any form when you are trying to teach something! That is irresponsible, and disrespectful toward your students who are trying to learn.Third the end goals seem to change, as they are teaching you. You first learn how to generate a simple realtime sound with PortAudio [the ultimate goal], but then everything become about generating a wave file for output and the reader is left pondering how to generated more then one sound at a time and keep it going. When they do get to how to make a realtime plug-in, you aren't taught how to create a simple synthesizer, you just end up making a delay line. Sure a delay line is important, but it doesn't teach me, how I need to manage MIDI and generate sound continuously...Anyway, if you can deal with those 3 things then you will get a lot out of this book and don't get me wrong there in this book.However, this book really needed a few more revisions to be everything it could be. Maybe someday that will happen.

Not so much a book as it is a collection of chapters that relate to the subject of programming audio applications. There isn't really a clear direction and subjects tend to change drastically from chapter to chapter. Still, it is full of really cool algorithms and contains lots of information (with great graphics) to get you started in audio DSP. My only real complaint is the example code uses horrible style and is devoid of comments.An example where multiple variables are declared using vague names:double r, rsq, rr, costh, scal;Or sometimes they use comments but the variable names are meaningless.:a = exp(-k/T); //calc the constant ratio value

I've just reviewed Designing Audio Objects for Max/MSP and Pd and referenced this book so it's only fair I review this as well. This book is not very beginner friendly despite the learning C chapters in the beginning. If anything it's more of a refresher on C. So, that being said I highly recommend this book as a pure beginner intro C Primer Plus (5th Edition) to C very big but thorough. This book is such an essential part of my library now and such a valuable resource in the world of DSP and what goes on in the engine of your favorite DSP environments. If you are interested in how Csound or Max works under the hood or just want to start trying to contribute to open source projects yourself this is such a great place to start! My appreciation goes to all of the authors involved in this project!

As a seasoned coder new to audio processing I give this book 5 big stars. It explains through numerous coding examples and projects all of the major aspects of coding for audio. It also provides cross-platform libraries you will find essential, as well as extra chapters not included in the book via the included DVD. I was able to synthesize my own sound waves, and even write my own wav file player within a week.That said I would not recommended this book to someone who is unfamiliar with coding. The authors do try to give an introduction to c programming, however I found that the examples in this book would be very difficult for a new programmer to be able to follow, let alone compile, given that there are many libraries which must be linked etc. Personally though, I loved that upon opening the book for the first time I could flip through the pages gingerly and see tons and tons of straight c code. The theory is there, but more importantly so is it's practical application, and that's what makes this book awesome.

This may be the only book you'll need on audio programming. It has a C primer in Chp 1, then it goes into each of the cornerstones of audio programming... faders, effects, FFT,... everything! This is one hefty book. It should keep you busy for a long time. The enclosed DVD is also very thorough. Just get this book before you buy anything else.
