About the Author
Gordon L. Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He served in the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969–70 and subsequently in airborne infantry, long-range patrol and intelligence assignments until retiring after 26 years. He was a Special Operations Forces scenario writer at the Joint Readiness Training Center for 12 years and is now a freelance writer, living in Texas.Peter Dennis was inspired by contemporary magazines such as Look and Learn, leading him to study Illustration at Liverpool Art College. Peter has since contributed to hundreds of books, predominantly on historical subjects, including many Osprey titles. A keen wargamer and modelmaker, he is based in Nottinghamshire, UK.

This Osprey Elite Series book discusses how the U.S. Marine Corps organized for combat in World War II, specifically, for the need to at least triple the size of the Corps and to conduct operations across the entire Pacific Ocean area. The focus is on the various Marine Infantry Regiments. Author Gordon L. Rottman provides highly knowledgeable commentary on the experiences of each regiment. The narrative is very nicely supported with a great selection of period photographs and modern illustrations of uniforms, weapons, and personal equipment. This reviewer was particularly impressed with a chart showing the number of days in combat for each regiment, and where. Highly recommended as a concise summary for students of the U.S. Marine Corps in the Second World War.
This book was a little disappointing. At least based on what was indicated as being in the book. Not a whole lot of good pictures showing paratroopers with their gear, which is what I was looking for. The color plates were nice, but frequently what 'the book' says the soldiers had and what pictures show are two different things, the color plates seemed to be based on the former. Good organizational information, but not very much depth. I read the Kindle version, but I bet it would have been nicer in paper.
Another excellent Osprey Book written by Gordon Rottman. This book blends everything about the grow of the US Airborne Forces. It is built around the Parachute Regiment. The book is packed with drawings,photo's and tech info, There is something there for everyone. It builds on past books on US Airborne Forces and Warfare. A great Book.
Very pleased
This book is one of the greatest books covering all of the PIRs in World War Two. The artwork and pictures are fantastic and help describe the weapons and equipment of these soldiers better than just words. The overviews are good to get a general idea of the campaigns that these men fought in.
Good reference. Great illustrations.
For my purposes, it was disappointing as the coverage about the 508th PIR was sparse.
Lots of good research data here.
